Facial asymmetry is considered a marker of psychological, emotional and physiological distress, while anxiety is a behavioural, psychological and physiological response to a threat to well-being. Since individuals respond to anxiety with specific patterns (e.g., muscular tension), it is reasonable to hypothesize that anxiety could contribute to facial tension and therefore facial asymmetry. Instead, since facial asymmetry is perceived as "unpleasant" from peers, its presence may be a hindrance to social adaptation contributing to generate anxiety. In this study, we investigated whether resting

In medically ill patients the term 'somatic symptoms' is used to understand those symptoms which cannot be fully understood in the light of existing medical illness(es). These include a number of physical symptoms and also certain clinical syndromes such as irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome among others. However, it is increasingly recognized that such patients have larger degrees of psychological morbidities, especially depressive and anxiety disorders, and have disproportionately elevated rates of medical care utilization, including outpatient visits, hospi

This article explores the use of family history of disease as a public health tool for risk stratification and improved disease prevention by drawing from previous research on women at moderate risk of developing breast cancer because of a positive family history. About one quarter to one third of women do not appear to be aware of the added risk a family history of breast cancer poses, and many women with a family history overestimate their risk. It is unclear whether risk perceptions are causally related to breast cancer screening in women with a family history. Exaggerated risk perceptions

Sexual assault survivors demonstrate substantial resilience, prompting calls for strength-based approaches to understanding recovery. One construct receiving increasing attention is self-compassion (i.e., treating oneself with kindness and understanding in the face of suffering), which may buffer against the negative mental health effects of assault victimization. The current systematic review synthesized data from 31 peer-reviewed studies examining self-compassion, sexual assault exposure, and mental health. Reported in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most emotionally demanding conditions encountered in neurosurgical and acute neurotrauma practice. Sudden neurological deterioration, unexpected death in young and previously healthy individuals, persistent prognostic uncertainty, and systemic resource constraints together create a uniquely intense emotional environment for clinicians involved in TBI care. While the psychosocial consequences of TBI for patients and caregivers have been extensively studied, the emotional burden borne by treating clinicians-particularly experiences of grief, moral distre

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is a major health burden, and breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL) is a potentially persistent complication that may cause swelling, heaviness, tightness, pain and functional and psychological limitations. This study compared the frequency of self-reported symptoms between patients with and without BCRL and examined associations between symptom severity and distress and objective lymphoedema measures.
METHODS: A total of 120 women who completed primary cancer treatment were included (n=68 with BCRL; n=52 without BCRL). Symptom severity and distress were assessed

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness study (ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03016403) assessed the effects of a stepped-care intervention versus usual care on mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, coping self-efficacy, emotional distress (anxiety and depression combined), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and perceived stress among underserved patients (i.e., low-income, uninsured, underinsured) with lung cancer (LC) and head-and-neck cancer (HNC).
METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, we investigated if 147 patients who received the stepped-care intervention had bette

BACKGROUND: Primary brain tumor (PBT) patients experience higher levels of distress and anxiety than other solid tumor patients, particularly at the time of clinical evaluation when uncertainty about disease status is high ("scanxiety"). There is promising evidence supporting use of virtual reality (VR) to target psychological symptoms in other solid tumor patients, though PBT patients have not been studied extensively in this context. The primary aim of this phase 2 clinical trial is to establish the feasibility of a remote VR-based relaxation intervention for a PBT population, with secondary

The role of stress and its neuroendocrine mediators in tinnitus is unclear. In this study, we measure cortisol as an indicator of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis alterations and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as a marker of adaptive neuroplasticity in hair of chronic tinnitus patients to investigate relationships with tinnitus-related and psychological factors. Cross-sectional data from chronic tinnitus inpatients were analyzed. Data collection included hair sampling, pure tone audiometry, tinnitus pitch and loudness matching, and psychometric questionnaires. Elastic net re

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a time of change when suffering from a medical condition such as short stature can impact the emotional well-being of adolescents. Our objective was to study the adjustment of adolescents with short stature (SS), analyzing the factors influencing it.
METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated 101 adolescents with SS from different hospitals in Valencia, Spain, using instruments validated for the sample: anxious and depressive symptomatology (as a diagnostic adjustment measure), psychopathology, self-esteem, physical self-concept, psychological well-being, and

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional data show elevated levels of circulating cytokines in psychiatric patients. The literature is divided concerning anti-inflammatory drugs' ability to relieve symptoms, questioning a causal link between inflammatory pathways and psychiatric conditions. We hypothesised that the development of circulating cytokine levels is related to mental distress, and that this relationship is affected by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
METHODS: The study was a longitudinal assessment of 12-week inpatient treatment at Modum Bad Psychiatric Center, Norway. Sera and self-reported

PURPOSE: Quality of Life (QoL) of insulin-naïve people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) improves after transition to insulin. Little is known about the role of hypoglycaemia in this context. Secondary analyses of the Study of the Psychological Impact in Real care of Initiating insulin glargine Treatment (SPIRIT) aimed to investigate the relationship between hypoglycaemia and QoL when transitioning to insulin.
METHODS: Insulin-naïve Dutch people with T2DM in suboptimal glycaemic control (HbA1c >53 mmol/mol; 7.0%) on maximum dose of oral glucose-lowering medications were included from 363 p

OBJECTIVE: Distress management guidelines emphasize the importance of addressing psychological symptoms in cancer patients. Mental health interventions that are time-bound are more easily integrated into oncology care. We tested the feasibility of a time-bound Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) protocol for anxiety, depression, and psychological flexibility in cancer patients.
METHODS: Breast, prostate, stage III/IV colorectal cancer, or leukemia patients who scored ≥5 on the PHQ-9 and/or GAD-7 were included. The intervention group completed three virtual FACT sessions; controls

Queer youth in Egypt navigate a carceral ecosystem characterized by systematic state surveillance, medical pathologization, and societal exclusion. Despite the severity of these conditions, empirical data on their lived experiences remains scarce. This study addresses this gap through a web-based, cross-sectional quantitative survey (N = 165) designed specifically to bypass Western clinical pathologization. The findings reveal a catastrophic mental health crisis: 70.3% of respondents reported self-harm, and 56.4% reported at least one suicide attempt. A three-step hierarchical multiple regress

Exposure to traumatic events such as disasters, violence, and wars through social media has been associated with psychological distress and secondary traumatic stress (STS). However, limited evidence exists regarding how mindfulness and social sensitivity are associated with this digital form of trauma. This study examined the relationships among mindfulness, social sensitivity, and STS among social media users and tested the mediating role of social sensitivity. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2025 with 433 social media users in Türkiye. Data were collected using t

The Intuitive Eating Scale-3 (IES-3) is a new, 12-item measure of intuitive eating, which is recognised as a protective factor of disordered eating. Given its recency, there has been limited evaluation of the psychometric properties of the IES-3 in diverse national and linguistic contexts. Therefore, we report on the translation and psychometric evaluation of a novel Greek version of the IES-3 in Greek adults. A total of 1,138 women and 712 men completed the Greek IES-3 alongside additional measures selected to assess validity. Exploratory factor analysis with a first split-half subsample show

PURPOSE: New care models promise to increase access to germline genetic testing. To decrease testing gaps, we offered universal germline testing without pretest genetic counseling to unselected patients at a comprehensive cancer center. To address safety concerns over the elimination of pretest counseling, we examined detrimental psychological impact (DPI) after participants underwent testing in this novel model.
METHODS: We assessed participants' genomic testing-specific DPI using the Feelings About Genomic Testing Results instrument (2-weeks/6-months after disclosure). Overall DPI, negativi

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic disease often face administrative burden (eg, dealing with insurance paperwork) that affects their health and their care. Informal caregivers (family and close friends) provide important support to patients, but little is known about how they help patients address administrative burden.
METHODS: To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review about caregivers' experiences of healthcare-related administrative burden using Herd and Moynihan's Administrative Burden Framework, which describes learning, compliance, and psychological costs. We reviewed US-base

Background: Perinatal death in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) represents one of the most emotionally challenging experiences for nurses. While parental bereavement has been widely studied, nurses' experiences in neonatal end-of-life care remain insufficiently explored. Objective: To explore the experiences of NICU nurses facing perinatal death, focusing on emotional, professional, and institutional dimensions of care. Methods: A qualitative study with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach was conducted through ten semi-structured interviews with NICU nurses in a tertiary-level hospita
