Early Naso-Gastric Feeding and Outcomes of Anorexia Nervosa Patients.

Nutritional rehabilitation with weight restoration is an important step in patients hospitalised for anorexia nervosa (AN). Naso-gastric feeding (NGF) should be considered when oral nutrition (OF) and oral nutritional supplementation (ONS) are insufficient. We evaluated the role of NGF on short- and long-term outcomes, considering weight gain, the length of hospitalisation (LOS) and the time to relapse. We report on the characteristics of patients under 18 years of age with AN admitted to the Department of Emergency and Acceptance of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, IRCCS, Rome, between M

This study was conducted to demonstrate the therapeutic effect of soft-tissue mobilization (STM) combined with pain neuroscience education (PNE) for patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain with central sensitization. A total of 28 participants were recruited and randomly allocated to either the STM group (SMG) (n = 14) or the STM plus PNE group (BG; blended group) (n = 14). STM was applied twice a week for four weeks, with a total of eight sessions, and PNE was applied within four weeks, for a total of two sessions. The primary outcome was pain intensity, and the secondary outcomes wer

The Association of Altered Gut Microbiota and Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Integrity in Mice With Heroin Dependence.

The gut microbiota is believed to play a significant role in psychological and gastrointestinal symptoms in heroin addicts. However, the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. We show here that heroin addicts had a decrease in body mass index (BMI) and abnormal serum D-lactic acid (DLA), endotoxin (ET) and diamine oxidase (DAO) levels during their withdrawal stage, suggesting a potential intestinal injury. The gut microbial profiles in the mouse model with heroin dependence showed slightly decreased alpha diversity, as well as higher levels of Bifidobacterium and Sutterella and a decrea

Multivariate Patterns of Posterior Cortical Activity Differentiate Forms of Emotional Distancing.

Distancing is an effective tactic for emotion regulation, which can take several forms depending on the type(s) of psychological distance being manipulated to modify affect. We recently proposed a neurocognitive model of emotional distancing, but it is unknown how its specific forms are instantiated in the brain. Here, we presented healthy young adults (N = 34) with aversive pictures during functional magnetic resonance imaging to directly compare behavioral performance and brain activity across spatial, temporal, and objective forms of distancing. We found emotion regulation performance to be

Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Elderly Parkinson Disease Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical picture of obsessive-compulsive disorder encompasses a broad range of symptoms that are related to multiple psychological domains, including perception, cognition, emotion, and social relatedness. As obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) frequently have an early onset, there are limited data about OCS in older populations (≥65 years) and, in particular, in elderly subjects with Parkinson disease (PD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of OCS using a self-report measure (Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised) and to identify associated sociodemograp

Salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone as oral biomarkers to determine stress in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is one of the most common oral ulcerative diseases with a multifactorial etiology. Although psychological stress is an exacerbating factor, the role of salivary stress hormones, cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in this oral disease has not been extensively reported. The study aimed to estimate and compare the salivary cortisol and DHEA levels in RAS patients and healthy control group with the aid of ELISA microplate reader. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty patients were enrolled in our study, which included 30 patients with clinically diag

A Data Analysis Method for Using Longitudinal Binary Outcome Data from a SMART to Compare Adaptive Interventions.

Sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMARTs) are a useful and increasingly popular approach for gathering information to inform the construction of adaptive interventions to treat psychological and behavioral health conditions. Until recently, analysis methods for data from SMART designs considered only a single measurement of the outcome of interest when comparing the efficacy of adaptive interventions. Lu et al. proposed a method for considering repeated outcome measurements to incorporate information about the longitudinal trajectory of change. While their proposed method can b

Apparent Effects of Opioid Use on Neural Responses to Reward in Chronic Pain.

Neural responses to incentives are altered in chronic pain and by opioid use. To understand how opioid use modulates the neural response to reward/value in chronic pain, we compared brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses to a monetary incentive delay (MID) task in patients with fibromyalgia taking opioids (N = 17), patients with fibromyalgia not taking opioids (N = 17), and healthy controls (N = 15). Both groups of patients with fibromyalgia taking and not taking opioids had similar levels of pain, psychological measures, and clinical symptoms. Neural responses in the nuc

Physical activity and sedentary levels in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is essential for children throughout their growth and maturation. It improves physiological and psychological health and limits the risk of developing metabolic disorders. However, some chronic physiological and metabolic diseases may lead to decreased PA. The diversity of outcomes in the literature offers no consensus for physical activity and sedentary levels in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: A literature review and a meta-analysis were carried out with original studies from a Medline databas

Non cardiac chest pain (NCCP) are recurrent angina pectoris like pain without evidence of coronary heart disease in conventional diagnostic evaluation. The prevalence of NCCP is up to 70 % and may be detected in this order at all levels of the medical health care system (general practitioner, emergency department, chest pain unit, coronary care). Reduction of quality of life in NCCP is comparable, partially even higher compared to cardiac chest pain. Reasons for psychological strain are symptom recurrence in app. 50 %, nonspecific diagnosis with resulting uncertainty and insufficient integrati
