Exercise, Sports Participation, and Quality of Life in Young Patients with Heritable Thoracic Aortic Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with heritable thoracic aortic disease (HTAD) are often restricted from sports and certain types of exercise. This study was designed to investigate the effect of lifetime exercise exposure and competitive sports participation on quality of life (QOL) in patients 15-35 yr old with syndromic (Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) and nonsyndromic HTAD (nsHTAD). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used questionnaires to assess lifetime exercise exposure and utilized the PedsQL QOL Inventory. We developed an exercise exposure score (EE

Clinical question: Can virtual reality be an effective adjunctive to conventional treatment in patients with chronic lower back pain?

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is the most prevalent chronic pain condition worldwide, accounting for 15-20% of physician visits and costing billions of dollars. Without adequate treatment, it can lead to substance use disorder and increased risk of suicide. Current treatments include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), opioids, surgery, and non-pharmacological adjuncts. Evidence suggests cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as adjunctive therapy can improve patient commitment to treatment but not pain intensity. However, CBT is limited due to availability, location and shortage o

Coming of age in war: Early life adversity, age at menarche, and mental health.

Armed conflict and forced migration (ACFM) represent a set of extreme environments that are increasingly common for children and adolescents to experience. Adolescence may constitute a sensitive period (puberty and psychoneurological maturation) through which ACFM adversity leaves a lasting mark. Adolescence has become a focal point for analysis and intervention as it relates to the effects of early life adversity on puberty, linear growth, and mental health. Research in public health and psychological science suggests early life adversity (ELA) may accelerate puberty, heightening risks for me

The criminalization of women with postpartum psychosis: "a call for action" for judicial change.

PURPOSE: To prevent the incarceration and influence outcomes when criminal culpability is linked to postpartum psychosis. METHODS: Infanticide, neonaticide and filicide are most often linked with postpartum psychosis, which affects 1-2 women per 1,000 births or 4,000 women each year in the United States. Multiple genetic, hormonal and psychosocial factors surrounding childbirth result in a 1 to 4% risk of infanticide in women with postpartum psychosis. The authors seek to increase awareness of postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression in state legislatures. Others are working to have it

The interaction between TMEM161B (rs768705) and paranoid personality traits in relation to the risk of major depressive disorder: Results form a longitudinal study of 7642 Chinese freshmen.

BACKGROUND: Rs768705 (TMEM161B) is one of the identified single nucleotide polymorphisms related to major depressive disorder (MDD). Paranoid personality traits are independently associated with the risk of MDD. This study aimed to investigate the interaction effect between rs768705 (TMEM161B) and paranoid personality traits on the new-onset risk of MDD in Chinese freshmen. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted among 7642 Chinese freshmen without lifetime MDD at baseline in 2018. 158 new-onset MDD cases were ascertained in 2019. DNA samples were extracted to detect the genotype of rs768

Using ambulance surveillance data to characterise blood-borne viral infection histories among patients presenting with acute alcohol and other drug-related harms.

OBJECTIVE: Preventable transmission of blood-borne viruses (BBV), including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV), continue in at-risk populations, including people who use alcohol and drugs (AODs). To our knowledge, no studies have explored the use of ambulance data for surveillance of AOD harms in patients with BBV infections. METHODS: We used electronic patient care records from the National Ambulance Surveillance System for people who were attended by an ambulance in Victoria, Australia between July 2015 and July 2016 for AOD-related harms

Developing an aerobic exercise intervention for patients with psoriasis to support lifestyle behaviour change and improve health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis do not exercise to the extent recommended for cardiovascular health, which may contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and metabolic syndrome observed in this patient group. We previously identified that patients with psoriasis have significant disease-specific barriers to exercise. Others have reported that individuals with psoriasis develop higher heart rates and systolic blood pressure during bouts of exercise, followed by a slower recovery than healthy control subjects. AIMS: We hypothesized that a bespoke, evidenced-based, exer

Effects of live-online, group mindfulness training on opioid use and anxiety during buprenorphine treatment: A comparative effectiveness RCT.

BACKGROUND: Office-based opioid treatment with buprenorphine has emerged as a popular evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder. Unfortunately, psychosocial stress, anxiety, pain, and co-morbid substance use increase patients' risk for relapse. We designed this study to compare the effects of complementing buprenorphine treatment with 24 weeks of a live-online Mindful Recovery Opioid Care Continuum (M-ROCC) group to a time and attention-matched, live-online Recovery Support Group (RSG) active control condition. METHODS: We plan to enroll a maximum of N = 280 and randomize at least N =

Psychological Treatment of Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder/Genitopelvic Dysesthesia Using an Integrative Approach.

Persistent genital arousal disorder/genitopelvic dysesthesia (PGAD/GPD) is characterized by persistent, unwanted physiological genital arousal (i.e., sensitivity, fullness, and/or swelling) in the absence of sexual excitement or desire which can persist for hours to days and causes significant impairment in psychosocial well-being (e.g., distress) and daily functioning. The etiology and course of PGAD/GPD is still relatively unknown and, unsurprisingly, there are not yet clear evidence-based treatment recommendations for those suffering from PGAD/GPD. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman

Can patient-led surveillance detect subsequent new primary or recurrent melanomas and reduce the need for routinely scheduled follow up? Statistical analysis plan for the MEL-SELF randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The MEL-SELF trial is a randomised controlled trial of patient-led surveillance compared to clinician-led surveillance in people treated for localised cutaneous melanoma (stage 0, I, II). The primary trial aim is to determine if patient led-surveillance compared to clinician-led surveillance increases the proportion of participants who are diagnosed with a new primary or recurrent melanoma at a fast-tracked unscheduled clinic visit. The secondary outcomes include time to diagnosis of any skin cancer, psychosocial outcomes, acceptability, and resource use. OBJECTIVE: The objective

Dual Diagnosis in Adolescents with Problematic Use of Video Games: Beyond Substances.

The technological revolution has led to the birth of new diagnoses, such as gaming disorder. When any addiction, including this one, is associated with other mental disorders, it is considered a dual diagnosis. The objectives of this current work were to estimate the prevalence of dual diagnoses in the adolescent general population while also considering the problematic use of video games and substance addiction and assessing its psychosocial risk factors. Thus, we carried out a cross-sectional study with a sample of 397 adolescents; 16.4% presented problematic videogame use and 3% presented a

The combination of HIV and alcohol use internalized stigmas are associated with greater symptoms of depression in a South African sample living with HIV.

Approximately one-third of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in South Africa (SA) present to HIV care with unhealthy alcohol use (UA); depression is highly prevalent among this population. Internalized HIV and UA stigma have been associated with greater depressive symptoms when examined in isolation. Yet, prior research has rarely examined how internalized HIV and UA stigmas together relate to depressive symptoms and related outcomes. This study examined how internalized stigma around HIV and UA together are associated with depressive symptoms, related social and work/schoo

Long COVID and long chain fatty acids (LCFAs): Psychoneuroimmunity implication of omega-3 LCFAs in delayed consequences of COVID-19.

The global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to the lasting pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the post-acute phase sequelae of heterogeneous negative impacts in multiple systems known as the "long COVID." The mechanisms of neuropsychiatric complications of long COVID are multifactorial, including long-term tissue damages from direct CNS viral involvement, unresolved systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, maladaptation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and coagulation system, dysregulated immunity, the dysfunction of
