Non-diabetic hypoglycemia: bridging gaps in diagnosis and treatment: a position statement report by the Arabic Association for the Study of Diabetes and Metabolism (AASD).

BACKGROUND: Non-diabetic hypoglycemia presents a substantial diagnostic challenge due to its diverse and often nonspecific symptomatology. The resultant delay in diagnosis can lead to a myriad of misdiagnoses. This misidentification not only prolongs patient suffering but also elevates the risk of severe complications, such as permanent neurologic damage and mortality. Recognizing the clinical nuances of non-diabetic hypoglycemia is paramount for timely and accurate diagnosis, which ultimately enhances patient outcomes and safety. MAIN BODY: A position statement has been formulated by the Ara

Effect of electronic patient record use on mortality in End Stage Renal Disease, a model chronic disease: retrospective analysis of 9 years of prospectively collected data.

BackgroundIn chronic disease, health information technology promises but has yet to demonstrate improved outcomes and decreased costs. The main aim of the study was to determine the effects on mortality and cost of an electronic patient record used in daily patient care in a model chronic disease, End Stage Renal Disease, treated by chronic maintenance hemodialysis. Dialysis treatment is highly regulated, and near uniform in treatment modalities and drugs used.MethodsThe particular electronic patient record, patient-centered and extensively coded, was used first in patient care in 3 dialysis u

Successful salvage of a severe COVID-19 patient previously with lung cancer and radiation pneumonitis by mesenchymal stem cells: a case report and literature review.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, elderly patients with underlying condition, such as tumors, had poor prognoses after progressing to severe pneumonia and often had poor response to standard treatment. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may be a promising treatment for patients with severe pneumonia, but MSCs are rarely used for patients with carcinoma. Here, we reported a 67-year-old female patient with lung adenocarcinoma who underwent osimertinib and radiotherapy and suffered from radiation pneumonitis. Unfortunately, she contracted COVID-19 and that rapidly progressed to severe pneumonia. She respo

Establishment of the First Comprehensive Adult and Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Unit in the United Arab Emirates: Rising to the Challenge.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is increasingly indicated for various malignant and non-malignant diseases. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), patients that could benefit from the procedure commonly need to seek medical care abroad in view of the lack of a comprehensive HSCT facility that could offer the full spectrum of interventions and monitoring protocols. This comes with considerable challenges related to coverage and logistics of travel. It also limits the continuity of clinical care, and presents inconvenience to patients who come from a different cultural background. In

Herpes zoster prophylaxis: Essential for treating newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is known for its immune disturbance and patients suffering from MM are thus vulnerable to opportunistic infections, including herpes zoster (HZ). As HZ infection remarkably affects patients' quality of life and poses huge economic burdens on the health system, we aim to identify the risk factors of HZ infection and evaluate the effects of different dosages, types, and durations of anti-HZ prophylaxis drugs to prevent HZ infection. METHODS: 551 MM patients at Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan between January 1, 2009 and August 31, 2021 were restrospec

High prevalence of potential drug interactions affecting mycophenolic acid pharmacokinetics in nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.

ObjectiveMycophenolic acid (MPA) exposure is associated with clinical outcomes in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. Various drug interaction studies, predominantly in healthy volunteers or solid organ transplant recipients, have identified medications which impact MPA pharmacokinetics. Recipients of nonmyeloablative HCT, however, have an increased burden of comorbidities, potentially increasing the number of concomitant medications and potential drug interactions (PDI) affecting MPA exposure. Thus, we sought to be the first to characterize these PDI in nonmyeloablative HCT recipi

Incidence and correlates of high-grade chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with lung cancer.

BackgroundHigh-grade chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) represents a dreaded toxicity of cancer treatments. In some cases, it may limit activities of daily living and become permanent. Because many prior studies of CIPN were conducted in breast cancer populations, less is known about CIPN in men. We therefore determined the incidence and correlates of high-grade CIPN in a large cohort of patients with lung cancer.MethodsWe collected data from the ECOG-ACRIN E1594 (comparison of 4 chemotherapy regimens: cisplatin-paclitaxel, cisplatin-gemcitabine, cisplatin-docetaxel, carboplatin

The Economic Burden of Cancer in Canada from a Societal Perspective.

Cancer patients and their families experience considerable financial hardship; however, the current published literature on the economic burden of cancer at the population level has typically focused on the costs from the health system's perspective. This study aims to estimate the economic burden of cancer in Canada from a societal perspective. The analysis was conducted using the OncoSim-All Cancers model, a Canadian cancer microsimulation model. OncoSim simulates cancer incidence and deaths using incidence and mortality data from the Canadian Cancer Registry and demography projections from
