A male infant presenting with severe heart failure and respiratory distress was diagnosed with a hypoplastic right lung, scimitar syndrome with pulmonary sequestration and multiple anomalous systemic arteries, left bronchomalacia, a large atrial septal defect and coarctation of the aorta. The infant underwent a successful combined treatment of surgical and transcatheter intervention, including coil embolization and endobronchial stenting.

A first case is reported of illicit intravenous injection of pentazocine tablets recognized in a country other than the USA. The pulmonary complications of i.v. drug abuse in general and in particular the hazards of injection of aqueous suspensions of pharmaceutical preparations intended for oral consumption, with embolization of abundant insoluble foreign material, are discussed. Diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic procedures are suggested.

Rasmussen's aneurysm is a rare but potentially fatal complication of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), characterized by the development of a pseudoaneurysm in the pulmonary arterial system due to chronic inflammation and weakening of the vessel wall. This condition arises from tuberculous destruction of lung parenchyma, leading to erosion of adjacent pulmonary arteries and subsequent aneurysm formation. Clinically, it presents with life-threatening hemoptysis, often requiring prompt diagnosis and intervention. Imaging modalities such as contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and digital subtrac

A 16-year-old male underwent transcatheter arterial embolization against a large hepatic tumor, and was subsequently scheduled for removal of the tumor. Sudden hypotension and tachycardia were observed on removal of the tumor. Massive bleeding or obstruction of the inferior vena cava was expected to develop, but this did not occur because of simultaneous pulmonary hypertension (PH). The development of acute PH due to pulmonary vasoconstriction was suspected. Milrinone and prostaglandin E1 were effective. The same type of PH was again observed during manipulation of the residual portion of the

A woman died undelivered of amniotic fluid embolism. Postmortem examination showed that cord entanglement had caused premature placental separation with a marginal tear of the membranes and so opened a route of entry for amniotic fluid into the subplacental maternal venous sinuses. It is suggested that premature separation of the normally implanted placenta, associated with macro- or microscopic tears of or damage to the fetal membranes, provides a route of entry for amniotic fluid through the placental site in approximately one half of the fatal cases of amniotic fluid embolism.

Massive gas embolism during cardiopulmonary bypass is a rare but ever-present danger. Following this catastrophic event, the immediate institution of core cooling on bypass may be advantageous. The remarkable complete recovery of our patient is attributed to this technique, which was used in conjunction with standard therapy.

Transcatheter closure of the fossa ovalis atrial septal defect with adequate rims has become the procedure of choice in recent times. We report our experience with 439 patients who were selected for percutaneous device closure and 430 of whom underwent transcatheter closure of fossa ovalis atrial septal defects from May 1997 to May 2006. Device closure was not attempted in the remaining nine patients after initial evaluation due to high right atrial pressure following balloon occlusion (n=1 not parallel, high pulmonary vascular resistance (n=1), significant coronary artery disease (n=1), or th

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive disease that leads to cardiopulmonary dysfunction and right heart failure from pressure and volume overloading of the right ventricle (RV). Mechanical cardiopulmonary support has theoretical promise as a bridge to organ transplant or destination therapy for these patients. Solving the challenges of mechanical cardiopulmonary support for PH and RV failure requires its testing in a physiologically relevant animal model. Previous PH models in large animals have used pulmonary bead embolization, which elicits unpredictable inflammatory responses and has

PURPOSE: To describe the findings of pleural and pulmonary staining of the inferior phrenic artery, which can be confused with tumor staining during transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatoma.
METHODS: Fifteen patients who showed pleural and pulmonary staining without relationship to hepatic masses at inferior phrenic arteriography were enrolled. The staining was noted at initial TACE (n = 8), at successive TACE (n = 5), and after hepatic surgery (n = 2). The angiographic pattern, the presence of pleural change on computed tomography (CT), and clinical history were evaluated.

We evaluated prospectively the extent of trophoblastic embolization and its central hemodynamic effects during and after evacuation of large molar pregnancies in six women. A pulmonary artery catheter was inserted to obtain hemodynamic measurements as well as to obtain blood samples to identify trophoblasts before, during, and six hours after evacuation. Small numbers of both multinucleated giant cells and of large mononuclear cells with abundant cytoplasm were identified in the buffy coat of blood, aspirated in two cases before evacuation and for all six cases, during evacuation. There were n

Pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that can arise secondary to infections, including COVID-19. Early recognition and timely intervention are crucial to prevent complications. We describe a 41-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who presented with hemoptysis and persistent dry cough 2 months after recovering from COVID-19 pneumonitis. Computed tomography angiography revealed a 2.3 cm pseudoaneurysm in the right lower lobe pulmonary artery, associated with a cavitary lesion. Selective angiography confirmed a 25 mm PAP. Owing to its wide nec

BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura is a rare fibroblastic neoplasm. It is commonly found incidentally on imaging and is usually benign but has significant potential to recur as a malignant tumor. Patients present asymptomatically or with pulmonary symptoms such as cough or shortness of breath. Cardiac invasion of an SFT can create an avenue for peripheral tumor embolization and critical limb ischemia, as in this case report. There is no prior published report of recurring malignant SFT presenting as critical limb ischemia. CASE REPORT We report a rare presentation of maligna

Fat labeled with triolein-(131)I was introduced through a burr hole into single tibial marrow cavities and the hole was sealed. The radioactivity over the thorax was monitored for 2-5 hours. After sacrifice, the radioactivity was determined in lungs, injected tibia or leg, kidneys, brain, thyroid gland and blood. Presence of pulmonary embolic fat was verified by histologic methods. Intravasation occurred after closure of the burr hole; it was delayed in several animals and failed to occur in 1 animal. The following mean percentages of the injected activity were found: in lungs 44.8% (0.04-85.1

BACKGROUND: Hemoptysis after repair of tetralogy of Fallot is uncommon and should prompt evaluation for residual pulmonary arterial lesions, infection, and systemic-to-pulmonary collaterals.
CASE SUMMARY: A 30-year-old woman with repaired tetralogy-type anatomy and an absent left pulmonary artery presented 5 months after intracardiac repair with hemoptysis. Postoperative computed tomographic angiography showed an absent/nonvisualized left pulmonary artery, a small focal hemorrhagic opacity in the left lower lung, and systemic collateral supply from the descending thoracic aorta and left infer

BACKGROUND: Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) has been reported in association with cirrhosis and extrahepatic portal venous obstruction; reports of PPH in noncirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF) are few.
AIM: To evaluate pulmonary arterial pressure in patients with NCPF.
METHODS: Twenty two patients with NCPF underwent hemodynamic studies for pulmonary arterial pressure after excluding secondary causes of pulmonary hypertension. Hemodynamic studies were carried out through the femoral route using 7F Swan-Ganz catheter. Splenoportal venography was done by percutaneous splenic puncture.
