Evaluating the Impact of Little Cigar Use on the Oral Bacterial Microbiota of Cigarette Smokers.

Tobacco products (e.g., cigarettes, little cigars) harbor diverse bacterial communities and long-term tobacco use alters the oral microbiome, potentially leading to oral disease. However, no studies have evaluated the immediate changes in the oral bacterial microbiota that could occur after using a new tobacco product. To address this knowledge gap, buccal swab and saliva samples were collected from forty cigarette smokers before and after a single use of a little cigar product on two separate visits. Total DNA was extracted from a total of 320 samples. The 16S rRNA gene was amplified from the

Isolation and identification of a protease-producing bacterium from abalone intestines and its application for degradation of fish proteins.

The gastrointestinal tracts of aquatic animals provide a unique environment for microbial growth. Proteases derived from microorganisms in aquatic taxa are particularly valuable owing to their stability under various temperature and salinity conditions. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify protease-producing bacteria from the intestines of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) and to evaluate their potential applicability to fishery waste degradation. Specifically, bacteria with high protease activity were isolated from the abalone intestine and identified through 16S rRNA sequencing,

Electrosynthetic bacterial growth under conditions simulating electric discharge in deep-sea hydrothermal fields.

Microbial electrosynthesis is a metabolic process in which extracellular electrons are utilized as the primary energy source for carbon fixation. While microbial electrosynthesis has been proposed as a novel concept for ecological primary production, our understanding of how such microorganisms are distributed in natural environments remains limited. In this study, we constructed a laboratory-scale electrochemical cultivation system that simulates electric discharge conditions in deep-sea hydrothermal fields. Microscopic counts revealed increased cell numbers in the electrochemical culture, an

Expansion of host range for Streptococcus agalactiae: first case in hybrid marbled goby (Oxyeleotris marmoratus ♀ × Oxyeleotris lineolatus ♂) from aquaculture.

The hybrid marbled goby (Oxyeleotris marmoratus ♀ × Oxyeleotris lineolatus ♂) is a high-value aquaculture species in China, with rapidly increasing production in recent years. While Streptococcus agalactiae is a well-known pathogen in various fish species, its association with marbled goby has not been previously reported. Here, we present the first confirmed case of S. agalactiae infection in farmed hybrid marbled goby. Infected fish exhibited typical signs of streptococcosis, including erratic swimming, hemorrhages at fin bases, skin ulcers, and cloudy or hemorrhagic eyes. A Gram-positive ba

Skin Microbiome Profiling in Patients with Primary Sjögren Disease Compared to Healthy Individuals.

Primary Sjögren disease (SjD) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of exocrine glands, most commonly leading to dry mouth and dry eyes. Although the etiology of SjD remains unclear, emerging evidence suggests that the microbiome modulates immune homeostasis. This study aimed to compare the skin microbiomes of SjD patients with those of healthy controls (HCs) using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Taxonomic composition, alpha and beta diversity, and predicted functional profiles were evaluated. We observed a significant depletion of Cutibacterium and a marked reduction in mic

Respiratory microbiota dynamics in piglets under nanotechnology-based and conventional vaccination protocols against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a key pathogen in porcine enzootic pneumonia (PEP) and plays an important role in the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). Understanding how vaccination strategies relate to the respiratory microbiota in piglets may provide insights into host-microbiota interactions and vaccine performance. This study evaluated the temporal dynamics of the respiratory microbiota in piglets subjected to different vaccination protocols, including a nanotechnology-based oral vaccine formulated with mesoporous silica (SBA-15), alone or combined with a commercial vaccine, on the r

Characterisation of the wound microbiome and antimicrobial resistance profiles in clinical isolates from epidermolysis bullosa patients.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) encompasses a rare, inherited group of skin disorders characterised by skin fragility, leading to painful, chronic wounds. While recent international studies have reported reduced microbial diversity and altered bacterial composition in EB blistered skins, no microbiome or antimicrobial resistance data is available for Australian EB patients. The objectives of this study were to characterise the wound microbiome of Australian EB patients and identify bacterial pathogens and their associated antimicrobial resistance profiles. METHODS: A total of 15 chron

Longitudinal omics study of transcriptional dynamics in Lactobacillus crispatus.

BACKGROUND: The vaginal microbiome is an important component of female reproductive health. Community State Type I (CST-I), which is dominated by Lactobacillus crispatus, is generally considered to be closely associated with a healthy vaginal microecological state. Although the taxonomic composition of CST-I communities remains relatively stable, the transcriptional dynamics of Lactobacillus crispatus across different phases of the menstrual cycle remain unclear. METHODS: A healthy reproductive-age woman with a stable CST-I vaginal microbiome was enrolled in this longitudinal study. Vaginal s

The role of microbiota in bovine tuberculosis: Characterizing bacterial communities across lungs, gut, and lymph nodes.

Animals with bovine tuberculosis (bTB) develop granulomatous lesions as part of a complex immune response to chronic antigenic stimulus involving innate and adaptive mechanisms; however, the association of the microbiota with the development of and susceptibility to bTB remains poorly understood. This study characterizes the bacterial communities at different body sites involved in the pathophysiology of bTB, highlighting the gut-lung axis and their association with disease. Lungs, gut, thoracic, and mesenteric lymph nodes samples were collected from 31 bovines from a single herd (n = 19 bTB;

First molecular evidence of vertical transmission of Ehrlichia canis in naturally infected female dogs in Brazil.

Ehrlichia canis is an obligate intracellular bacterium transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato. This pathogen is also the etiological agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, a disease with widespread global distribution and recognized zoonotic potential. Although vector-borne transmission is well established, evidence supporting the occurrence of vertical transmission remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the potential transplacental transmission of E. canis in 51 naturally infected pregnant bitches using molecular diagnostic techniques, genetic sequencing, and p
