Adipose tissue-derived metabolite risk scores and risk for type 2 diabetes in South Asians.

BACKGROUND: South Asians are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) than many other race/ethnic groups. Ectopic adiposity, specifically hepatic steatosis and visceral fat may partially explain this. Our objective was to derive metabolite risk scores for ectopic adiposity and assess associations with incident T2D in South Asians. METHODS: We examined 550 participants in the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) cohort study aged 40-84 years without known cardiovascular disease or T2D and with metabolomic data. Computed tomography scans at baseline assessed h

Prevalence of adults with stimulant misuse and/or stimulant use disorder in Massachusetts, USA, 2014-2021.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stimulant-involved overdose deaths are increasing throughout the United States. Because stimulant misuse (i.e. taking a prescribed medicine not as directed) and stimulant use disorder contribute to the surging number of stimulant-related deaths, knowing the prevalence of stimulant misuse and use disorder is important. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of stimulant misuse and/or use disorder in Massachusetts from 2014 to 2021. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cohort study using a multiple systems estimation approach (previously known as 'capture-recapture'),

The glucagon-like peptide-1 and other endocrine responses to alcohol ingestion in women with versus without metabolic surgery.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapies, effective in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes, hold potential for reducing alcohol-seeking behaviour. However, the understanding of how alcohol consumption affects endogenous GLP-1 responses-important for understanding GLP-1-based therapies' potential in addressing alcohol misuse-is limited, given the absence of placebo-controlled studies examining these effects. This study aimed to determine the acute effects of alcohol ingestion on GLP-1 and other peptides and evaluate whether metabolic surgery, which increases GLP-1 responses, blood alcoh

Presence of endometriosis and chronic overlapping pain conditions negatively impacts the pain experience in women with chronic pelvic-abdominal pain: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of overlap between endometriosis and chronic pain conditions is emerging; however, little is known about how the pain experience differs based on the presence or absence of endometriosis. OBJECTIVES: In a sample of women reporting chronic pelvic-abdominal pain (CPP), the aim of this study was to characterize differences in pain symptomatology between women with and without endometriosis and to examine the influence of chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) on pain among these two groups. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study, based on an online survey. METHODS:

Understanding risk factors for revision surgery after cubital tunnel release: Analysis of patient selection, surgeon, and clinical factors.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize factors that may contribute to revision surgery following primary cubital tunnel release (CuTR) surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed by reviewing all patients who underwent CuTR at a single institution between 2014 and 2021. Only primary in situ CuTR surgeries were included. Exclusion criteria were any case of primary ulnar nerve transpositions or ulnar nerve decompression surgery related to pathology other than isolated ulnar neuropathy (ie. elbow fracture repair, medial epicondylitis debridement, etc.). Prognostic Factors for Postoperative Chronic Pain after Knee or Hip Replacement in Patients with Knee or Hip Osteoarthritis: An Umbrella Review.

Knee and hip osteoarthritis are highly prevalent in the older population. Management of osteoarthritis-related pain includes conservative or surgical treatment. Although knee or hip joint replacement is associated with positive outcomes, up to 30% of patients report postoperative pain in the first two years. This study aimed to synthesize current evidence on prognostic factors for predicting postoperative pain after knee or hip replacement. An umbrella review of systematic reviews was conducted to summarize the magnitude and quality of the evidence for prognostic preoperative factors predictiv

Perinatal Factors and Emotional, Cognitive, and Behavioral Dysregulation in Childhood and Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: This cohort study assessed perinatal factors known to be related to maternal and neonatal inflammation and hypothesized that several would be associated with emotional, cognitive, and behavioral dysregulation in youth. METHOD: The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) is a research consortium of 69 pediatric longitudinal cohorts. A subset of 18 cohorts that had both Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) data on children (6-18 years) and information on perinatal exposures including maternal prenatal infections was used. Children were classified as having the CBCL-Dysreg

Examining Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Tobacco Dependence Treatment Among Medicaid Beneficiaries Using Fifty State Medicaid Claims, 2009-2014.

In the USA, low-income racial/ethnic minority groups experience higher smoking rates and greater smoking-related disease burden than their White counterparts. Despite the adverse effects, racial/ethnic minorities are less likely to access tobacco dependence treatment (TDT). Medicaid is one of the largest payers of TDT in the USA and covers predominantly low-income populations. The extent of TDT use among beneficiaries from distinct racial/ethnic groups is unknown. The objective is to estimate racial/ethnic differences in TDT use among Medicaid fee-for-service beneficiaries. Using a retrospecti

"That's why we're speaking up today": exploring barriers to overdose fatality prevention in Indianapolis' Black community with semi-structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose deaths are of great concern to public health, with over one million lives lost since 1999. While many efforts have been made to mitigate these, Black communities continue to experience a greater burden of fatalities than their white counterparts. This study aims to explore why by working with Black community members in Indianapolis through semi-structured interviews. METHODS: Semi-structured one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted in spring and summer of 2023 with Black residents (N = 23) of zip codes 46202, 46205, 46208, and 46218 in Indianapolis. Contraceptive Sabotage and Contraceptive Use at the Time of Pregnancy: An Analysis of People with a Recent Live Birth in the United States.

Contraceptive sabotage and other forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) can interfere with contraceptive use. We used 2012 to 2015 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data from 8,981 people residing in five states who reported that when they became pregnant, they were not trying to get pregnant. We assessed the relationships between ever experiencing contraceptive sabotage and physical IPV 12 months before pregnancy (both by the current partner) and contraceptive use at the time of pregnancy using multivariable logistic regression. We also assessed the joint associations between phys

Kimura's Disease: A Literature Review Based on a Clinical Case.

Kimura's disease (KD) was first described in 1937. It is a rare, benign, and chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorder affecting the subcutaneous tissue, salivary glands, and lymph nodes. The disease is more common in the second to third decades of life in middle-aged Southeast Asian countries. The cause of Kimura's disease remains unknown; some authors believe it is related to an autoimmune or delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. It commonly presents as a solitary painless lymph node in the head and neck or generalized lymphadenopathy (67%-100%) associated with peripheral eosinophilia

Esophageal dilation with EsoFLIP is faster than CRE balloon dilation combined with EndoFLIP in children.

BACKGROUND: Controlled radial expansion (CRE) balloon dilators are traditionally used to dilate esophageal strictures during an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). EndoFLIP is a diagnostic tool used during an EGD to measure important parameters of the gastrointestinal lumen, capable of assessing treatment before and after dilation. EsoFLIP is a related device that combines a balloon dilator with high-resolution impedance planimetry to provide some of the luminal parameters in real time during dilation. We sought to compare procedure time, fluoroscopy time, and safety profile of esophageal dilati

Prevalence and significance of clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential in lung transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), the age-related acquisition of somatic mutations that leads to an expanded blood cell clone, has been associated with development of a pro-inflammatory state. An enhanced or dysregulated inflammatory response may contribute to rejection after lung transplantation, however the prevalence of CHIP in lung recipients and influence of CHIP on allograft outcomes is unknown. METHODS: We analyzed whole-exome sequencing data in 279 lung recipients to detect CHIP, defined by pre-specified somatic mutations in 74 genes known to promote

Measuring disparities in event-free survival among children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in an academic institute in Oklahoma, 2005-2019.

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of childhood cancer. While there have been successes in the treatment of leukemia, less information is available on reasons for disparities in event-free survival (EFS) among underserved populations. METHODS: We partnered with a children's hospital at an academic institution to abstract data from the institution's cancer registry, the state cancer registry, and electronic medical records on cancer diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for children with ALL (n = 275) diagnosed from 2005 to 2019 prior to age 20.
