Bronchial fistula associated with sunitinib in a patient previously treated with radiation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of bronchial fistula associated with sunitinib in a patient previously treated with radiation therapy. CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old man with renal cell cancer diagnosed in 2005 and initially treated by radical nephrectomy presented in March 2007 with a recurrence with cerebral, mediastinal, and lung metastases. A thoracic computed tomography (CT) scan showed a subcarinal tumor obstructing the bronchus intermedius. The patient was initially treated with cerebral and thoracic radiotherapy and then with sunitinib 50 mg/day (4 weeks on, 2 weeks off). Two months after th

Radiation victim management and the haematologist in the future: time to revisit therapeutic guidelines?

PURPOSE: The use of nuclear/radiation devices against the civilian population is now a realistic scenario. Haematopoietic syndrome is the primary therapeutic challenge in the case of whole body acute exposure over 2 Grays (Gy) whereas burns and combined injuries would be frequently observed in myelo-suppressed patients. Optimisation of scoring and treatments are important goals to achieve. CONCLUSION: The European Response Category (RC) concept represents an attempt to integratively assess haematological/extrahematological radiation-induced lesions. Based on the frequently observed heterogene

Risk for radiation-induced cataract for staff in interventional cardiology: is there reason for concern?

OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence of radiation-associated lens opacities among interventional cardiologists and nurses and correlate with occupational radiation exposure. BACKGROUND: Interventional cardiology personnel are exposed to relatively high levels of X-rays and based on recent findings of radiation-associated lens opacities in other cohorts, they may be at risk for cataract without use of ocular radiation protection. METHODS: Eyes of interventional cardiologists, nurses, and age- and sex-matched unexposed controls were screened by dilated slit lamp examination and posterior lens

The preventive effect of N-acetylcysteine on radiation-induced dermatitis in a rat model.

PURPOSE: We investigated the potential radioprotective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) comparing its effects with that of amifostine (WR-2721), as a representative of clinically used radioprotector, in ameliorating skin injury from irradiation in rats (single dose, 18 Gy to the left hind legs of the rats). METHODS: The rats (n=28) were divided randomly and equally into 4 groups: Control (C), Radiation (R), R+WR-2721 (received irradiation and 200 mg/kg of WR- 2721) and R+NAC (received irradiation and 1000 mg/kg of NAC). Acute skin reactions were assessed every 3 days by a radiation oncologis

[A case report of pathologically complete response with chemo-radiation for rectal cancer].

A 60-year-old female presented to a local hospital with a chief complaint of melena. Since she was found to have a neoplastic lesion in the rectum on endoscopy, she was referred to our hospital. Barium-enema examination and endoscopy showed a 5-cm type-2 lesion proximal to the dentate line, which was diagnosed by biopsy as a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Pelvic CT and MRI showed lower rectal wall thickening with pararectal lymphadenopathy, and FDP-PET showed increased uptake in these sites. Under a diagnosis of cT3, cN2, M0, Stage III b cancer, she started with preoperative chemora

Prior head and neck radiation exposure is not a contraindication to minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with primary hyperparathyroidism can have a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy based on localization studies showing single-gland disease. In patients with a history of head and neck irradiation, due to the increased risk of multigland disease and risk of concurrent thyroid cancer, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is considered by some to be a contraindication. We postulated that previous history of head and neck irradiation should not be a contraindication for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and tested this hypothesis in a prospective cohort of patients un

[Effect of soil radiation pollution on the plant content of 137Cs and biogenic elements].

The paper presents the data of many years' studies of the effect of different soil radiation pollution levels on the plant accumulation of different types of 137Cs and potassium and phosphorus salts. With increased soil radiation levels, not only the plant content of 137Cs becomes higher, but that of potassium and phosphoric acid also changes. The amount of potassium is decreased in the topinambour and increased in the lentils, but only in its seeds; that of potassium and phosphoric acid is increased in all parts of rape.

Successful treatment of primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the vulva with radiation therapy.

Vulva, as a primary site of malignant lymphoma in women, is extremely rare. We report herein an 83-year-old patient with a primary, stage IIE vulvar, follicular center cell, B-cell lineage non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), with an excellent response to radiation therapy and event-free survival of 18 months. Early-stage primary vulvar NHL can be successfully treated only by limited field irradiation.

Effect of Bcl11b genotypes and gamma-radiation on the development of mouse thymic lymphomas.

Bcl11b is a haploinsufficient tumor suppressor gene and expressed in many tissues such as thymus, brain and skin. Irradiated Bcl11b+/- heterozygous mice mostly develop thymic lymphomas, but the preference of Bcl11b inactivation for thymic lymphomas remains to be addressed. We produced Bcl11b+/- heterozygous and Bcl11b wild-type mice of p53+/- background and compared their incidence of gamma-ray induced thymic lymphomas. Majority of the tumors in p53+/- mice were skin tumors, and only 5 (36%) of the 14 tumors were thymic lymphomas. In contrast, Bcl11b+/-p53+/- doubly heterozygous mice developed

Exposure of the mouse perinatal testis to radiation leads to hypospermia at sexual maturity.

The first round of mouse spermatogenesis begins from 3 to 4 days after birth through differentiation of gonocytes into spermatogonial-stem cells and type A spermatogonia. Consequently, this step of differentiation may determine generation of the original population of stem cells and the fertility potential of the adult mouse. We aimed to determine the effect of perinatal exposure to ionizing radiation on the testis at the end of the first wave of spermatogenesis and at sexual maturity. Our results show that, radiation sensitivity of the testis substantially decreases from late foetal life to t

Innovations in chemotherapy and radiation therapy: Implications and opportunities for the Asia-Pacific Rim.

New cases of invasive cancer in the United States occur among nearly 1.5 million people annually. In 2007, more than 1,500 people died per day with this diagnosis. Cancer is responsible for nearly one in every four deaths reported in the country. Enormous amounts of money and research have been, and are being spent, in an attempt to improve these numbers. While prevention and early detection remain the key to long-term success, treatment in the neo-adjuvant, adjuvant and metastatic settings still centre around two main treatment modalities - radiation therapy and chemotherapy. This article wil

Measurements of radiation level in petroleum products and wastes in Riyadh City Refinery.

Recent concern has been devoted to the hazard arising from naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in oil and gas facilities. Twenty-seven petroleum samples were collected from Riyadh Refinery. Fourteen samples were products and 13 were waste samples; three of them were scale samples and 10 were sludge samples. The specific radioactivities of (238)U, (232)Th, (226)Ra, (224)Ra, (40)K, and (235)U for all samples were determined using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The radium equivalent activity, radiation hazard indices and absorbed dose rate in air for all waste samples were e

Radiation-induced incidence of thymic lymphoma in mice and its prevention by antioxidants.

Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that in Swiss female mice exposed to an acute dose (3 Gy) of whole body irradiation (WBI), induced thymic lymphoma (TL) resulted after three to four weeks of exposure. The present study was aimed to further evaluate dependency on gender and effect of age of mice at the time of irradiation on TL incidence. A significant decrease in body weight gain was observed in female mice exposed to WBI, which was found to be correlated with the increase in weight and size of thymus, compared to their respective controls. An increase in TL incidence was observ

UV radiation-induced immunosuppression is greater in men and prevented by topical nicotinamide.

UV radiation-induced immunosuppression augments cutaneous carcinogenesis. The incidence of skin cancer continues to increase despite increased use of sunscreens, which are less effective at preventing immunosuppression than sunburn. Using the Mantoux reaction as a model of skin immunity, we investigated the effects of solar-simulated (ss) UV and its component UVA and UVB wavebands and tested the ability of topical nicotinamide to protect from UV-induced immunosuppression. Healthy, Mantoux-positive volunteers were UV-irradiated on their backs, with 5% nicotinamide or vehicle applied to differen
