Purpose in Life After Brain Injury: Expanding the Focus and Impact of Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a life-altering event that can abruptly and drastically derail an individual's expected life trajectory. While some adults who have sustained a TBI go on to make a full recovery, many live with persisting disability many years postinjury. Helping patients adjust to and flourish with disability that may persist should be as much a part of rehabilitative practice as addressing impairment, activity, and participation-level changes after TBI. Living with a sense of purpose in daily life has been shown to provide numerous health and psychological benefits in

Design and development of a modular wrist rehabilitation robot with impedance control and gravity compensation.

The number of stroke patients is steadily increasing, highlighting the critical need for rehabilitation to restore motor function. The shortage of rehabilitation specialists and the repetitive nature of traditional exercises underscore the advantages of robotic systems. However, many existing rehabilitation robots are not adaptable to various therapeutic requirements. Modular robots, with their reconfigurability and ease of assembly, provide a practical solution. This study presents the design and development of a modular wrist rehabilitation robot, consisting of three identical modules that p

Bruxism in implant-supported rehabilitations: a narrative review of clinical complications and management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism represents a significant risk factor for complications in implant-supported rehabilitations. Unlike natural teeth cushioned by periodontal ligament, the rigid osseointegrated connection transmits excessive bruxing forces directly to the implant-bone interface and prosthetic components. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge regarding bruxism-related complications in implant-supported rehabilitations and evaluates available management strategies. METHODS: A comprehensive narrative review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Sc

Forward Simulations of Walking on Surfaces with Asymmetric Mechanical Impedance: Insights for Gait Rehabilitation.

Gait asymmetry, prevalent in stroke survivors and various other neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, leads to abnormal joint loading, increased fall risk, and reduced walking efficiency. Traditional rehabilitation methods often fail to consistently reduce weight-bearing gait asymmetry, necessitating innovative approaches. This study explores the potential of an adjustable mechanical impedance treadmill to amplify weight-bearing asymmetries, leveraging the "error amplification" technique akin to split-belt treadmill training. We developed a 2D optimal control gait model in OpenSim to si

Nutrition in Oncology: Overcoming Challenges to Optimize the Patient Journey from Prehabilitation to Rehabilitation.

Patients with cancer are likely to be more malnourished than patients treated in other specialties, with many remaining at high nutritional risk prior to surgery or medical treatment. Malnutrition in patients with cancer can result in suboptimal clinical outcomes, and is linked to post-operative complications and reduced mortality, along with increased dose-limiting and treatment side effects. In addition, many medical treatments have gastrointestinal side effects which can further compromise the nutritional status of the patient. However, early patient assessment and proactive management of m
