Sexual health education for people with mental health problems: what can we learn from the literature?

Research into sexual risk behaviour among people with 'severe' mental health problems suggested that they are likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviour, for a number of reasons, putting them at risk of sexually transmitted diseases. The aim of this review is to describe approaches, content and outcomes of sexual health education programmes, developed and implemented for people with mental health problems. A literature review from 1980 to 2005 was carried out using the electronic databases CINAHL, PsycINFO, British Nursing Index, Pubmed and Medline, and the Cochrane library was also search

Involving users in service planning: a focus group approach.

This paper outlines the way in which a focus group approach was used to involve service users in the possible reconfiguration of follow-up services for breast cancer patients at a North London hospital. The focus group was used to identify the priority issues for users and the development of an objective questionnaire, to survey all current service users. Within the National Health Service (NHS) the concept of user involvement has been embodied in contemporary health policy, and has become an important constituent of current policy direction. This study was the first stage of a larger stakehol

Co-designing with adults with acquired neurological disability in the community: a scoping review protocol.

IntroductionCo-designing healthcare research and health services is becoming increasingly prominent. Co-design invites people with disability to leverage their lived experience knowledge to improve service provision, as well as ensuring meaningful and relevant research. Given the emerging nature of the use of co-design with adults with neurological disability, well-defined guidelines on best practice are yet to be developed. The aim of this scoping review is to synthesise available peer-reviewed literature which investigates the use of co-design in research and/or service development with adul

Updates to the Running Shoe and Injury Considerations.

Elite athletes continue to break new records while running shoe design evolves, diverges, and incorporates new technologies. Shoe design is grossly split between minimalist, traditional, and maximalist shoes. Each shoe has a unique design with characteristics defined by the stack height, heel height, heel-to-toe drop, arch support, cushion, weight, and resulting biomechanics. Current epidemiology of running-related injuries correlates to experience level, weekly volume, and training progression, but the literature currently suggests there are limited effects from footwear. Although biomechanic

Strategies for nonrandomized clinical research in hand surgery.

Most clinical research questions in hand surgery may be effectively explored using a variety of nonrandomized study designs. The main advantage of any of these methods is that they are almost always more feasible than a prospective randomized, controlled trial. Although the level of evidence associated with nonrandomized designs is always lower than that of a randomized trial there are many instances in which the inferences based on these designs are sufficiently strong that important and meaningful conclusions can be made. The key considerations in using nonrandomized designs are to frame the

Developing and evaluating a toolkit of strategies to support remote inclusive research teams.

Research teams must collaborate with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to identify effective and inclusive responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health emergencies. Collaborating remotely requires telecommunication and other technologies. We designed and evaluated a digital "Toolkit for Remote Inclusive Research" to provide research teams with evidence-informed strategies to make remote research accessible to and inclusive of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. First, we completed a rapid scoping review to identify technology used by peo

Antiviral drug research proposal activity.

The development of antiviral drugs provides an excellent example of how basic and clinical research must be used together in order to achieve the final goal of treating disease. A Research Oriented Learning Activity was designed to help students to better understand how basic and clinical research can be combined toward a common goal. Through this project students gained a better understanding of the process of scientific research and increased their information literacy in the field of virology. The students worked as teams to research the many aspects involved in the antiviral drug design pr

Comparing National Institutes of Health funding for cancer survivorship: a spotlight on breast and gynecologic cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivorship in the United States is rapidly rising, with a projected 50% increase by 2050, driven by improvements in treatment and increased incidence of cancers such as endometrial cancer. Along with this growth, long-term side effects create significant burdens, yet survivorship research, particularly for female-organ cancers, remains limited and imbalanced - with breast cancer studies far outnumber those for gynecologic cancers. To understand these disparities, funding patterns for survivorship research between disease sites, while accounting for differences in disease p

Registration of health and medical research.

Registration of health and medical research is an effective way of improving the transparency and credibility of evidence. Registration involves pre-specifying the research objectives, design, methods and analytic plan on a publicly accessible repository before conducting the study. Registration can reduce bias and improve the transparency and credibility of research findings. Registration is mandated for clinical trials, but it is also relevant to systematic reviews, observational and preclinical experimental research. This paper describes how researchers can register their research and outli

Global Collaborative Social Network (Share4Rare) to Promote Citizen Science in Rare Disease Research: Platform Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Rare disease communities are spread around the globe and segmented by their condition. Little research has been performed on the majority of rare diseases. Most patients who are affected by a rare disease have no research on their condition because of a lack of knowledge due to absence of common groups in the research community. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a safe and secure community of rare disease patients, without geographic or language barriers, to promote research. METHODS: Cocreation design methodology was applied to build Share4Rare, with consultation and input through

TurkPrime.com: A versatile crowdsourcing data acquisition platform for the behavioral sciences.

In recent years, Mechanical Turk (MTurk) has revolutionized social science by providing a way to collect behavioral data with unprecedented speed and efficiency. However, MTurk was not intended to be a research tool, and many common research tasks are difficult and time-consuming to implement as a result. TurkPrime was designed as a research platform that integrates with MTurk and supports tasks that are common to the social and behavioral sciences. Like MTurk, TurkPrime is an Internet-based platform that runs on any browser and does not require any downloads or installation. Tasks that can be

How to run round-robin social interaction studies: A tutorial for the efficient capture of natural social behavior.

The study of natural social behavior is a frontier discipline in psychology. Although such work is highly necessary for advancing and refining theories of social behavior, social cognition, evolutionary psychology, relationships, and more, researchers rarely commit to such intensive research designs due to the anticipated effort involved. In particular, to understand social behavior as it naturally unfolds, scientists must be able to collect and handle a high volume of rich social data efficiently, effectively, and reproducibly. Moreover, because social behavior is highly individualistic and c

Recent developments in diagnosis and intervention for aspiration and dysphagia in stroke and other neuromuscular disorders.

This review discusses the impact of the evidence-based report on dysphagia diagnosis and treatment in stroke patients prepared in 1999 by ECRI under contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Subsequent research findings are highlighted and research design and reporting problems in the field are discussed. Progress has been made toward standardizing training and rating of videofluoroscopic studies of swallowing (VFSS); however, a consensus does not yet exist. A randomized, controlled trial demonstrated that treatment directed by fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of sw

Controllable Structural Transformation of Non-Porous Propyl-Malonate Hexakis[60]fullerene by Chloroform Uptake/Release.

The design of dynamic structures with high recognition host-guest materials capable to host selectively small volatile molecules is an emergent field of research with both fundamental and applied implications. The challenge of exploring novel materials with advanced functionalities has led to the development of dynamic crystalline structures promoted by soft interactions. Here, a new pure organic dynamic framework based on hexakis[60]fullerene that are held together by weak van der Waals interactions is described. This crystalline structure is capable of absorbing and releasing chloroform, thr

[Current situation of clinical research on impacted premolars].

Teeth impaction is a common developmental malformation in oral diseases. Impacted teeth are usually the canines, third molar, central incisors, premolars, and second molars. The prevalence of impaction of maxillary canines and mandibular wisdom teeth is higher than that of other teeth. Most recent studies have focused on the canines and third molars, but research on impacted premolars is limited. In clinical practice, the majority of orthodontic patients require premolar extraction. Thus, impacted premolars play important roles in orthodontic design and prognosis. This article provides an over
