Effects of ozone on the defense to a respiratory Listeria monocytogenes infection in the rat. Suppression of macrophage function and cellular immunity and aggravation of histopathology in lung and liver during infection.

We have investigated the effect of exposure to ozone on defense mechanisms to a respiratory infection with Listeria monocytogenes in the rat. For this purpose rats were continuously exposed to O3 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 mg/m3 for a period of 1 week. In this model defense to a respiratory infection with Listeria depends on acquired specific cellular immune responses, as well as on natural nonspecific defense mechanisms. The results confirm earlier findings that show that ozone exposure can suppress the capacity of macrophages to ingest and kill Listeria. Moreover, the results sh

The Successful Recovery of a Critically Ill COVID-19 Patient, Following the Combination of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange and Convalescent Plasma Transfusion: A Case Report.

With an intricate symptom pattern involving a dysregulated host response to infection, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can cause severe inflammation and cytokine storms, acute respiratory distress syndrome, coagulopathy, multi-organ failure, and finally death. The uniqueness of this case report lies in the nature of the therapeutic intervention performed. While numerous studies are available on both the use of therapeutic plasma exchange in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and convalescent plasma transfusion as separate treatment methods, there is v

Specific subcortical structures are activated during seizure-induced death in a model of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP): A manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging study.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a major concern for patients with epilepsy. In most witnessed cases of SUDEP generalized seizures and respiratory failure preceded death, and pre-mortem neuroimaging studies in SUDEP patients observed changes in specific subcortical structures. Our study examined the role of subcortical structures in the DBA/1 mouse model of SUDEP using manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI). These mice exhibit acoustically-evoked generalized seizures leading to seizure-induced respiratory arrest (S-IRA) that results in sudden death unless resuscita

Noninvasive high-frequency percussive ventilation in the prone position after lung transplantation.

Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIV), which represents a consolidated treatment of both acute and chronic respiratory failure, is increasingly being used to maintain spontaneous ventilation in lung transplant patients with impending pulmonary complications. Adding a noninvasive inspiratory support plus positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has proven to be useful in preventing endotracheal mechanical ventilation, airway injury, and infections. Lung recipients with closure of the small airways in the dependent regions may also benefit from the prone position, which is helpful to pr

Inhaled nitric oxide in the management of preterm infants with severe respiratory failure.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and poor ventilation-perfusion matching are commonly found in preterm infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and respiratory failure. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) can improve gas exchange and decrease pulmonary vascular resistance. This study was conducted to determine whether iNO therapy improves oxygenation in such infants. STUDY DESIGN: Between July 2000 and 2006, 65 preterm infants (birth weight, <1500 g; gestational age, <31 weeks) with severe RDS and respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation and an oxygenation i

[Mannheimia haemolytica and the pathogenesis of enzootic bronchopneumonia].

Mannheimia (M.) haemolytica (formerly Pasteurella [P.] haemolytica) is the primary aetiological agent of pneumonic pasteurellosis--one of the most important respiratory diseases in cattle and sheep. While bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis is regarded to be mainly caused by M. haemolytica serotype A1, and in Germany during the last years also by serotype A6, sheep can be infected by all serotypes although there is an increased prevalence of serotypes A2 and A5-7. The obligate pathogenicity of M. haemolytica is proven by isolation of pure cultures from pneumonic lungs as well as by infection studi
