Impact of large-dose vitamin A supplementation on childhood diarrhoea, respiratory disease and growth.

One hundred and seventy-two 0.5-3.0-year-old children in a mountainous area of northern Hebei Province of China were randomly assigned to a vitamin A supplementation group (n = 98) or a control group (n = 74) for a 1 year double-blind study. Capsules containing 200,000 IU vitamin A and 40 IU vitamin E were given to the children in the experimental group 3 and 9 months after baseline examination. During the 12 month study period, there was a significant reduction in the incidence of diarrhoea (P < 0.01) and respiratory disease (P < 0.01) in the children of the experimental group compared to the

A mortality cohort study of seamen in Italy.

A total of 2,208 male subjects, enrolled as merchant marine seamen at the Civitavecchia (Italy) harbor from 1936 to 1975 were followed up through 1989 in order to evaluate their mortality experience. Available information about the number of sailings made it possible to divide subjects into two subgroups: 948 workers with at least one sailing (cohort A) and 1,260 with no reported sailing (cohort B). Fewer than expected overall deaths were observed in both cohorts (cohort A: SMR = 0.83; cohort B: SMR = 0.81), mainly due to a lower mortality from circulatory, respiratory, and digestive diseases.

[Pulmonary artery hypertension in chronic respiratory diseases].

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is one of the evolutive complications in respiratory diseases leading to chronic respiratory insufficiency (CRI). In most cases PH is mild, but acute worsening can happen and especially during exercise, during sleep (particularly during rapid-eye-movement sleep) and during acute respiratory failure. Usually, pulmonary artery pressure finds again the level observed prior to the worsening. Although PH is usually mild, it is of prognostic value in CRI and particularly in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CODP): the survival rate is significantly lowe

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in neonatal respiratory failure. 100 cases.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used in the treatment of 100 newborn infants with respiratory failure in three phases: Phase I (50 moribund patients to determine safety, efficacy, and risks); Phase II (30 high risk patients to compare ECMO to conventional ventilation); and Phase III (20 moderate to high risk patients, the current protocol). Seventy-two patients survived including 54% in Phase I, 90% in Phase II, and 90% in Phase III. The major complication was intracranial bleeding, which occurred in 89% of premature infants (less than 35 weeks) and 15% of full-term infants. Bes

Mortality and cancer morbidity after heavy occupational fluoride exposure.

A cohort of 431 male cryolite workers employed for at least six months between 1924 and 1961 was identified from personnel records at the Copenhagen cryolite factory. During this period, heavy fluoride exposure resulted in at least 74 cases of skeletal fluorosis. All workmen in the cohort were followed up in Denmark until July 1, 1981. During 1941-1981, 206 men died, while only 149.3 deaths were expected from national mortality statistics. Significant excesses were seen in the following causes of death: violent death and all cancers, in particular cancer of the respiratory system. When compare

In Vitro Comparison of a Low-Cost Bubble-NIV and Ventilator-Driven NIV.

BACKGROUND: Almost 2.5 million neonatal deaths occur annually, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. Respiratory support devices remain largely inaccessible in these regions because of prohibitive costs and infrastructure requirements. The WHO-style bubble CPAP provides accessible continuous positive pressure but cannot deliver bi-level support when CPAP alone is insufficient. We hypothesized that a low-cost bubble noninvasive ventilatory (Bubble-NIV) system, meant to augment the WHO-style bubble CPAP, would perform non-inferiorly to the ventilator-driven RAM-NIV in de

Effects of E-Cigarette Use on Voice: An Integrative Literature Review.

OBJECTIVES: E-cigarettes were developed by Hon Lik in China in 2003 and entered the United States market in 2006. Various areas of health widely discuss the effects of e-cigarettes, more recently investigating their effects on the larynx and voice quality. Despite the shortage of studies on voice production, the literature has already reported some effects. This study aimed to conduct a literature review on the effects of e-cigarettes on voice quality and the systems involved in speech production. STUDY DESIGN: Integrative literature review. METHODS: The study searched the databases of the C

A survey of SARS-CoV-2 tropism.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has significantly burdened global public health. However, the tropism of SARS-CoV-2 within the human body remains not fully understood. In this review, we overview the literature on SARS-CoV-2 infection across various human organs and tissues. We summarize the relevant specimen types, techniques for examining SARS-CoV-2 tropism, and findings at both organ/tissue and cellular levels. To systematically evaluate the evidence supporting SARS-CoV-2 tissue tropism, we establish a

The Aftermath of COVID-19: Exploring the Long-Term Effects on Organ Systems.

BACKGROUND: Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) is a complicated disease that affects millions of people all over the world. Previous studies have shown that PASC impacts 10% of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients of which 50-70% are hospitalised. It has also been shown that 10-12% of those vaccinated against COVID-19 were affected by PASC and its complications. The severity and the later development of PASC symptoms are positively associated with the early intensity of the infection. RESULTS: The generated health complications caused by PASC involve a vast variety of organ systems. P

Application of the Time Derivative (TD) Method for Early Alert of Influenza Epidemics.

BACKGROUND: In order to minimize the spread of seasonal influenza epidemic to communities worldwide, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has issued an influenza epidemic alert using the influenza epidemic threshold formula based on the results of the influenza-like illness (ILI) rate. However, unusual changes have occurred in the pattern of respiratory infectious diseases, including seasonal influenza, after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result, the importance of detecting the onset of an epidemic earlier than the existing epidemic alert system is increasin

Is There a Role for SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 on the Female Reproductive System?

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has emerged as a very serious pandemic caused by the rapidly evolving transmission of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Since its outbreak in 2020, the SARS CoV-2 has represented an important challenge for the physicians due to its well known respiratory sequelae. To date, the role of SARS-CoV-2 infection on organs and systems other than lungs and respiratory tract remains less clear. In particular, it remains to be investigated whether the reproductive system can be affected by the SARS-CoV-2 in the long term-period or, in alternative, drugs used to treat COVID-19 mig

RT-PCR/MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry-based detection of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva specimens.

As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections continue, there is a substantial need for cost-effective and large-scale testing that utilizes specimens that can be readily collected from both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals in various community settings. Although multiple diagnostic methods utilize nasopharyngeal specimens, saliva specimens represent an attractive alternative as they can rapidly and safely be collected from different populations. While saliva has been described as an acceptable clinical matrix for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, evaluations of

A Review: Does Complement or the Contact System Have a Role in Protection or Pathogenesis of COVID-19?

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 presentation may include a profound increase in cytokines and associated pneumonia, rapidly progressing to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This so-called cytokine storm often leads to refractory edema, respiratory arrest, and death. At present, anti-IL-6, antiviral therapy, convalescent plasma, hydroxychloroquine, and azithromycin among others are being investigated as potential treatments for COVID-19. As the disease etiology and precise therapeutic interventions are still not definitively defined, we wanted to review the roles that complement and the contac

[Guidelines for severe multiple and multiorgan traumatic injuries].

Traumatic injuries have been described as the largest epidemic of the 20th century. In view of the number of victims and the associated costs, they have been also called the most severe and longest war of the contemporary world. According to Lipiński, every year every tenth Pole is involved in an accident and every one hundred-thirteenth Polish citizen requires specialist medical care. Thus, the general incidence is approximately 750 accidents per 100,000 Poles per year. 300,000 of them need hospital treatment, 30,000 die from accidents. Despite considerable progress in medical sciences and pr

Changes in hospitalizations and emergency department respiratory viral diagnosis trends before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Population-level surveillance systems have demonstrated reduced transmission of non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we examined whether this reduction translated to reduced hospital admissions and emergency department (ED) visits associated with influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus, human parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus/enterovirus, and common cold coronavirus in Ontario. METHODS: Hospital admissions were identified from the Discharge Abstract Database and exclude elective surgical admissions
