Do Pitching Restriction Policies Reduce Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in High School Baseball Players?

BACKGROUND: Shoulder and elbow injuries (SEIs) remain prevalent among high school (HS) baseball players. Pitching restriction (PR) policies were mandated by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in 2016 as an injury prevention strategy to set workload limits and reduce overuse injuries. The effect of PR policies on HS baseball SEIs remains unknown. HYPOTHESES: (1) SEI rates in HS baseball players would be lower in the 3 seasons after PR policy implementation when compared with the 3 seasons before PR policy implementation and (2) specific components of PR policies w

Low oxygen content as a potential risk factor for scoliosis: a school-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional spinal deformity. While its clinical and imaging features are well established, the exact etiology and pathogenesis remain unclear. Previous studies have identified altitude as a significant environmental factor associated with scoliosis development. High-altitude regions are characterized by lower oxygen levels, raising the question of whether hypoxia contributes to the higher prevalence of scoliosis observed in these areas. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used school-based scoliosis screening data. Individuals with an angle of trunk r

"AS LONG AS IT TASTES GOOD": STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF CLIMATE-FRIENDLY SCHOOL MEALS IN A MIXED-METHODS STUDY.

Shifting toward sustainable diets is key to reducing the environmental impact of food systems. In school meals, this often involves meat reduction through strategies such as all-vegetarian days and lower-carbon recipe reformulation. Yet students' perceptions of such concrete menu changes have received little attention. This convergent mixed-methods study examined students' perceptions of climate-friendly school meals and their interpretations of meat reduction. Quantitative survey data from 1,268 students across six Swedish schools were analyzed using multiple regression, alongside qualitative

Associations of indoor bacterial, metabolomic, and other chemical exposures with allergic rhinitis in school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: The indoor environment has been implicated as a critical factor in the development of allergic diseases. However, the interplay among indoor microbiota, metabolites, and other environmental chemicals in relation to childhood allergic rhinitis (AR) remains underexplored, particularly in subtropical regions. This study investigates the joint associations of multi-omics profiles in classroom dust with AR prevalence among school-aged children in southern China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2023 across 45 middle schools in Guangzhou, China, encompassing 3,944 st

Return to School After Posterior Spinal Fusion in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) is the standard surgical treatment for progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). While return to sport after PSF has been described, return to school (RTS) remains poorly defined despite its educational and psychosocial importance. This study aimed to quantify RTS timelines, compare anticipated versus observed absences, and evaluate demographic, surgical, psychosocial, and socioeconomic predictors. METHODS: Consecutively enrolled English-speaking AIS and juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (JIS) patients undergoing PSF at a single institution betwe

More than just awareness: Longitudinal evaluation of an eating disorders training program for school counselors.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are complex psychiatric conditions that often remain undetected in school settings. School counselors (SCs), as frontline observers, may play an important role in early recognition and referral. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a training program designed to support SCs' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding EDs in Türkiye. METHODS: Data were obtained from forty-nine SCs from Erzincan, Türkiye, who had previously provided baseline data (T0) and participated in a longitudinal study with two additional assessment time points: post-training (T1

Asymptomatic WPW Pattern Detected by School ECG Screening: Prevalence, Phenotype, and Automated Interpretation Errors.

Background/Objectives: The Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern is characterized by ventricular preexcitation due to an accessory atrioventricular pathway. Population-based data on the prevalence of asymptomatic WPW patterns in children are limited, and automated ECG interpretation may be misleading in the setting of preexcitation. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of the WPW pattern in a large cohort of asymptomatic Romanian school children and to describe electrocardiographic characteristics, ECG-based accessory pathway localization, and automated ECG interpretation errors. Methods: We

The use of mindfulness based interventions for school-aged children with ADHD in the United States - a literature review.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed chronic childhood disorders in the United States (U.S.). Children with ADHD struggle to function across multiple settings and undermanaged symptoms can impact academic performance, home life, and social conduct. Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have been increasingly proposed as a non-pharmacological treatment for ADHD among children globally. However, the application and adaptation of MBIs for the management of ADHD in children in the U.S. is in the early stages of development and study. The purpose of

Relating objective and subjective assessment of working memory in school-age children: A review and meta-analysis.

Working memory plays an important role in learning and is a critical component of evaluations for children and adolescents suspected of neurodevelopmental disabilities. Evaluations often include both objective (i.e., performance-based) as well as subjective (i.e., rating-based) assessments of working memory. However, the degree of correspondence between these different methods is unclear. The present study evaluated the relationship between these two working memory assessment methods in school-age children using a multilevel meta-analytic approach. An overall estimated effect size of r = -0.23

Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) in children and adults: a practice-oriented narrative review and household-school algorithm.

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection), caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis, remains among the most common helminth infections worldwide and disproportionately affects children and caregivers in households and institutional settings. Despite its high prevalence, practical guidance is often fragmented across primary care, pediatrics, and public-health sources. We conducted a SANRA-guided, clinician-oriented narrative review synthesizing evidence on the epidemiology and psychosocial burden of enterobiasis, transmission dynamics in households and educational settings, best available diagnost
