Histological response of inflamed pulp to hydraulic calcium silicate cements in direct pulp capping: Systematic review of pulpitis models.

This systematic review aimed to compare the histological response of inflamed pulpodentinal complex to the hydraulic calcium silicate cements in experimental animal models of pulpitis. Articles that evaluated the histological response of inflamed pulp to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in comparison with other restorative materials were selected and analysed in detail. The risk of bias assessment was conducted using SYRCLE's RoB tool. The GRADEpro tool was used to determine the overall quality of evidence. Out of the 2947 retrieved articles from databases, five articles fulfilled the inclusio

Optimizing Nervous System-Specific Gene Targeting with Cre Driver Lines: Prevalence of Germline Recombination and Influencing Factors.

The Cre-loxP system is invaluable for spatial and temporal control of gene knockout, knockin, and reporter expression in the mouse nervous system. However, we report varying probabilities of unexpected germline recombination in distinct Cre driver lines designed for nervous system-specific recombination. Selective maternal or paternal germline recombination is showcased with sample Cre lines. Collated data reveal germline recombination in over half of 64 commonly used Cre driver lines, in most cases with a parental sex bias related to Cre expression in sperm or oocytes. Slight differences amon

[The naked king in the pandemic: about the production and communication of scientific knowledge at the time of SARS-CoV-2.].

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has lifted the veil about how medical knowledge is produced and disseminated. Action Bias, together with economic, academic and media-related interests, has concurred to generate and spread low-value and even unreliable information about some hypothetical therapeutic interventions for CoViD-19. Not only this "infodemic" has weakened people's ability to make informed health choices, but it also has influenced the process of new evidence generation through the violation of the equipoise principle. The CoViD-19 infodemic has further highlighted the need for reliable health

Are male and female responses to social phobia diagnostic criteria comparable?

Females typically report higher social phobia levels than males in community samples, and this may be due to sex bias in assessment measures. This study aims to establish whether patterns of responding to social phobia diagnostic criteria in the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) are comparable across males and females. A subsample of participants in the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (1997) reporting at least one social fear were selected (n = 1755). Analyses were conducted using a series of multi-group confirmatory factor analyses for categorical d

Antidepressant drugs for chronic urological pelvic pain: an evidence-based review.

The use of antidepressant drugs for the management of chronic pelvic pain has been supported in the past. This study aimed to evaluate the available evidence for the efficacy and acceptability of antidepressant drugs in the management of urological chronic pelvic pain. Studies were selected through a comprehensive literature search. We included all types of study designs due to the limited evidence. Studies were classified into levels of evidence according to their design. Ten studies were included with a total of 360 patients. Amitriptyline, sertraline, duloxetine, nortriptyline, and citalopr

Cross-orientation transfer of adaptation for facial identity is asymmetric: a study using contrast-based recognition thresholds.

Recent studies suggest that adaptation effects for face shape and gender transfer from upright to inverted faces more than the reverse. We investigated whether a similar asymmetry occurred for face identity, using a recently developed adaptation method based on contrast-recognition thresholds. When adapting and test stimuli shared the same orientation, aftereffects were similar for upright and inverted faces. When orientation differed, there was significant transfer of aftereffects from upright adapting to inverted test faces, but none from inverted to upright faces. We show that asymmetric cr

[Early recurrence of spectacular shrinking deficit as a form of presentation in a cardio-embolic infarct].

INTRODUCTION: Spectacular shrinking deficit (SSD) is a little known neurovascular syndrome with a monophasic clinical course. It was observed in 4.8% (11 of 231 patients) with cardio-embolic cerebral infarcts in the records of patients with cerebrovascular disease at our hospital. CLINICAL CASE: We present the only patient in our records (0.04% of the cardio-embolic infarcts and 0.06% of the patients in the series, which consists of 1,500 consecutive patients with stroke studied over a period of 8 years) with recurrent SSD, which was the form of presentation of rheumatic mitral valve disease

Arterial oxygenation does not predict the outcome of patients with acute respiratory failure needing mechanical ventilation.

One hundred and eighteen patients consecutively submitted to mechanical ventilation during a one year period, and admitted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, were prospectively studied in order to define the importance of hypoxaemia as a predictor of mortality. Using a discriminant multivariate analysis, the following variables were selected as the best predictors of outcome: 1) the number of associated complications (NAC) on admission; 2) the simplified acute physiologic score (SAPS); 3) oxygenation index (PAO2-AaPO2)/PAO2 + 0.014 positive end-expirato

Thought deficit in psychotic depression and chronic paranoid schizophrenia: methodological and conceptual issues. Commentary on Marjorie L. Carter's "The assessment of thought deficit in psychotic depression and chronic paranoid schizophrenia".

Based on test comparisons involving psychotic depressives and chronic paranoid schizophrenics, Carter (J. Nerv. Ment. Dis. 174: 336-341, 1986) inferred that cognitive disorder may reflect a general psychosis factor rather than a differential diagnostic marker. Review of the design and analysis raises methodological and conceptual issues that obviate such interpretation. Problems include absence of control for IQ and chronicity of illness, sample bias incurred by selectively matching groups for education, use of parametric statistics on ordinal data, measures that do not differentially assess c

Human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-I) antibodies in Africa.

Antibodies specific for human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) were demonstrated in serum samples from various groups of people in South Africa, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Egypt. The samples had been collected for other purposes and were presumably selected without bias toward clinical conditions associated with HTLV infections. Regional differences in antibody positivity were observed, indicating widely distributed loci of occurrence of HTLV on the African continent in people of both black and white ancestry. Two patients with high titers of antibody to HTLV-I had some

Efficacy and safety of combinational therapy using topical minoxidil and microneedling for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Androgenetic alopecia is a widespread condition that is the most common type of hair loss affecting approximately 58% and 40% of men and women by the age of 50, respectively. Patients have been known to experience severe distress due to androgenetic alopecia, including anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the efficacy of combination therapy using topical minoxidil and microneedling compared to topical minoxidil alone. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials was carried out using th

The Differences Between Same-Day and Staged (Circumferential) Fusion Surgery in Adult Spinal Deformity: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a deformity in the curvature of the adult spine. ASD includes a range of pathology that leads to decreased quality of life for patients as well as debilitating morbidities. Treatment can range from nonoperative management to long-segment surgical corrections and depends greatly on the deformity and patient profiles. If surgical treatment is indicated, circumferential (a combined anterior and posterior approach) fusion is one of the tools in the spine surgeon's armamentarium. Depending on the complexity, the procedure is either completed on the same d

Antibiotic prophylaxis for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients with ascites, without gastro-intestinal bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is frequent among cirrhotic patients, associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Selective intestinal decontamination employing antibiotics is a proposed prophylactic measure. While data regarding this modality among cirrhotic patients with gastrointestinal bleeding exist, there is insufficient data synthesis regarding cirrhotic patients with ascites and no gastrointestinal bleeding. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether antibiotic prophylaxis decreases spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and mortality among cirrhotic patients with ascites and no

The impact of action video game experience on visual selective attention in deaf middle school students.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown that congenital deafness enhances peripheral visual processing but may reduce attention to central stimuli. In contrast, action video game experience has been shown to improve top-down attentional control and resistance to distraction. However, it remains unclear whether action video game experience can modify the peripheral attention bias typically observed in deaf individuals, particularly within the context of perceptual load theory. This question is crucial for understanding adaptive mechanisms and informing attention training interventions in the
