Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a lymphedema and fibrosis self-management program for head and neck cancer survivors: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) are at high risk for developing lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF). Once diagnosed with LEF, survivors must engage in a lifelong program of self-care to minimize long-term adverse effects. However, evidence-based LEF self-management (SM) programs are lacking. To fill this void, we developed and pilot-tested a LEF-SM program for HNC survivors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The LEF-SM Program was developed using the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model of health behavior change as a framework. The program was pilot tested in a three-group random

Impulsivity and Attention in Obsessive Compulsive and Tic Disorders: Mismatch in Self-Report and Behavioural Data.

Impulsivity is a multidimensional, cross-diagnostic behavioural construct that has been described in various psychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS). Different interpretations of results in the past have raised the question of heightened impulsivity as an explanatory model for self-described impulsive behaviour, especially in OCD. Our study included 16 patients with OCD, 14 patients with TS, and 28 healthy control subjects (HC). Self-assessed impulsivity was examined by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), and the behavioural test

Chronic inflammatory pain promotes place preference for fentanyl in male rats but does not change fentanyl self-administration in male and female rats.

The current opioid epidemic is a national health crisis marked by skyrocketing reports of opioid misuse and overdose deaths. Despite the risks involved, prescription opioid analgesics are the most powerful and effective medications for treating pain. There is a clear need to investigate the risk of opioid misuse liability in male and female adults experiencing chronic pain. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that chronic inflammatory pain would increase fentanyl intake, motivation to acquire fentanyl, and drug seeking in the absence of fentanyl in rats. Fentanyl intake, motivation

Interprofessional Simulation in Hospital Leadership Training: Its Role in Improving Participants' Self-Efficacy.

PURPOSE: Training health services administration (HSA) professionals is essential for the effective functioning of hospitals. Evidence suggests that training should emphasize social and decision-making competencies, as HSA professionals collaborate in an interprofessional environment. Simulation training (ST) for HSA in an interprofessional context is a promising approach. This study evaluated the effectiveness of such a training program on leadership self-efficacy, examined differences across professions and tested whether there was an interaction between profession and training effects. Internet-based acceptance and commitment therapy (iACT) improves professional psychological help-seeking attitudes: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Professional psychological help-seeking attitudes are crucial for addressing mental health challenges, yet the mechanisms underlying their improvement through internet-based interventions remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to (1) evaluate the efficacy of Internet-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (iACT) in enhancing professional help-seeking attitudes, and (2) elucidate the longitudinal mediating roles of psychological rigidity and self-stigma. METHODS: A total of 91 male participants (Mean Age = 21.09) were randomly assigned to eith

Self-Oriented Comparison Scale for Appearance (SOCS-A): Development and psychometric evaluation.

Appearance-related social comparison, or comparing one's body to another's body, is a risk factor for negative body image and disordered eating. People also compare their current body to their former appearance (i.e., self-oriented appearance comparison), which could also serve as a potential risk, maintenance, or protective factor for negative body image and disordered eating. Yet, there is no existing multi-item measure of self-oriented comparison directions (upward, downward) applicable across diverse appearance-related changes. Therefore, we developed the Self-Oriented Comparison Scale for

Social agency buffers pain sensitivity during a critical window following spared nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Social buffering of pain, where social contact blunts pain intensity, is well established. However, the degree to which agency over social contact, rather than passive social exposure alone, modifies pain intensity or social behavior is unclear. METHODS: Using a social operant self-administration procedure in which mice lever-press for access to their pair-housed partner, we show that voluntary social engagement gates pain after spared nerve injury (SNI). After 8 days of training, mice underwent SNI and then regained access to social self-administration either 1 day (Early) or 5 d

Nurse-Facilitated Self-Management in Peritoneal Dialysis: A Cross-Sectional Study from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) depends on patients' self-management abilities, supported by nursing interventions that extend beyond technical skills to include psychosocial and educational domains. Evidence from Saudi Arabia on how these behaviors relate to clinical and quality-of-life outcomes remains limited. Aim: To assess self-management behaviors among adult PD patients, examine their associations with clinical and quality-of-life outcomes, and explore the mediating role of emotional well-being, with implications for nursing practice. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study wa

Parental Social Support and Preschoolers' Oral Health Behaviours: The Mediating Role of Parental Stress and Self-Efficacy.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Oral health behaviours (OHBs) of preschoolers are crucial for preventing early childhood caries (ECC); however, the relationship between parental/caregivers' factors and the OHBs of Chinese preschoolers has not been clearly defined. This study aimed to explore the relationship between parental/caregivers' social support and the OHBs of Chinese preschoolers, and whether parental stress and self-efficacy mediate this relationship serially. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Minhang District, Shanghai, from December 2023 to March 2024, among 2393 particip

The comparative efficacy of comprehensive self-care interventions in chronic illness: An updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of self-care interventions is not well understood in part because of variation in the domains of self-care being targeted as well as in modes of intervention delivery and behavioral change techniques used in trials. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to synthesize the efficacy of comprehensive self-care interventions on relevant outcomes across six common chronic illnesses. DESIGN: Meta-analysis, meta-regression, and subgroup comparisons. METHODS: Data extraction focused on randomized controlled trials published between 2008 and 2022 designed to enhance comprehen

The Associations Between Loneliness, Hopelessness, and Self-control and Internet Gaming Disorder Among University Students Who Were Men Who Have Sex With Men: Cross-sectional Mediation Study.

BACKGROUND: The minority stress model postulates that men who have sex with men (MSM) often encounter multiple stressors because of their sexual minority status, which may lead to psychological problems and maladaptive coping such as addictive behaviors (eg, internet gaming disorder [IGD]). It was hypothesized that hopelessness and loneliness would be associated with IGD via self-control among MSM. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence of IGD and its associations with variables related to minority stress (loneliness and hopelessness) among MSM who were university students. Mediati

International normalized ratio self-management lowers the risk of thromboembolic events after prosthetic heart valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Although prosthetic valves are durable and easy to implant, the need for lifetime warfarin-based anticoagulation restricts their exclusive usage. We investigated if anticoagulation self-management improves outcome in a single-center series. METHODS: Between 1994 and 1998, 765 patients with prosthetic valve replacements were prospectively enrolled and randomized to receive conventional anticoagulation management by their primary physician (group 1, n = 295) or to pursue anticoagulation self-management (group 2, n = 470).
