Regional distribution of cerebral arteriovenous malformations. Interactions with sex and handedness.

On the basis of clinical observation and a developmental theory of cerebral laterality, Geschwind and Galaburda suggested that cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are more common in the left hemispheres of male patients. We tested this hypothesis by examining interactions among sex, handedness, and location of lateralized, supratentorial AVMs. Data from 112 cases were analyzed by log-linear procedures. We found that (1) females had a greater proportion of left-hemisphere AVMs, whereas males showed an opposite trend; (2) there were no interactions between sex and handedness; and (3) non

Analysis of the chromosome aberrations induced by x-rays in somatic cells of Drosophila melanogaster.

A technique has been perfected for enabling good microscope preparations to be obtained from the larval ganglia of Drosophila melanogaster. This system was then tested with X-rays and an extensive series of data was obtained on the chromosome aberrations induced in the various stages of the cell cycle.-The analysis of the results obtained offers the following points of interest: (1) There exists a difference in radio-sensitivity between the two sexes. The females constantly display a greater frequency of both chromosome and chromatid aberrations. They also display a greater frequency of sponta

Risk factors for early pulmonary valve replacement after valve disruption in congenital pulmonary stenosis and tetralogy of Fallot.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital heart defects with a component of pulmonary stenosis are often palliated in childhood by disrupting the pulmonary valve, either by means of dilation or excision. It is unclear what factors affect a patient's ability to tolerate long-term pulmonary insufficiency before requiring pulmonary valve replacement. We analyze potential factors that are related to the interval between pulmonary valve disruption and pulmonary valve replacement. METHODS: One hundred seven patients were analyzed. They had a congenital diagnosis of pulmonary stenosis or tetralogy of Fallot, had their

Low skeletal muscle mass index is independently associated with low bone mineral density in kidney transplant recipients: a retrospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and osteopenia are more frequent in patients who have received kidney transplants than in healthy individuals. Although osteoporosis and sarcopenia are closely related, only few studies have considered them in the post-transplantation period. We aimed to investigate the relationship between lower bone mineral density and skeletal muscle in kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: We included 371 patients in the maintenance phase of kidney transplantation (> 6 months after transplantation) followed-up at our institution from January to December 2019. The primary endpoint

A decade of increasing complexity in patients sustaining a hip fracture in England, Wales and Northern Ireland: a national cohort study using the National Hip Fracture Database dataset.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures (HF) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality and account for substantial health and social care costs. We report the incidence and characteristics of older patients (≥60 years) presenting with hip fractures (HFs) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. METHODS: We conducted a national cohort study of HF events recorded in the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) between May 2011 and September 2023. HF incidence was derived using sex and age-banded mid-year population estimates from the Office for National Statistics to calculate at-risk population incidence for

Gender-specific Causal Relationship between Sex Hormones and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Mendelian Randomisation Study.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have shown a correlation between sex hormones and the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), but it remains unclear whether these associations are causal. AIMS: We aimed to investigate the potential causal relationships between a range of sex hormones and the risk of CTS using a Mendelian randomisation (MR) approach. METHODS: We selected exposure-related genetic instruments from genome-wide association studies summary data using significance thresholds. The CTS summary data were obtained from two sources: the UK Biobank (UKB) (12,887 cases and 443,

Role of Sex and Age on Cardiovascular and Autonomic Responses During Acute and Repeated Restraint Stress in Rats.

In this study we evaluated the influence of sex (male × female adult rats) and age (adult × adolescent × aged male rats) in expression and habituation of the cardiovascular and autonomic responses to restraint stress in rats. For this, arterial pressure, sympathetically-mediated cutaneous vasoconstriction and heart rate (HR) were assessed in Wistar rats during a single (acute) or the 10th session of restraint. We found similar cardiovascular responses during the acute session of restraint stress in male and female animals. Cardiovascular habituation was evident as an accelerated HR return to p

Sex differences in chronotype distribution and their association with insomnia in a nationwide Korean survey.

Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, affects 6-10% of the global population and causes significant functional impairments. Chronotype, individual diurnal preferences, influences health outcomes and varies by sex. However, evidence on sex-specific chronotype distribution and its relationship with insomnia in Asian populations remains limited. This study aimed to examine how chronotype is distributed differently between men and women, and to explore its relationship with insomnia symptoms using nationwide population-based data from Korea. We analyzed data from 2,838 participants aged 20-59 year

Impact of sex, strain, and age on blood ethanol concentration and behavioral signs of intoxication during ethanol vapor exposure.

Animal models of alcohol drinking and dependence are a critical resource for understanding the neurobiological mechanisms and development of more effective treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Because most rat strains do not voluntarily consume large enough quantities of alcohol to adequately model heavy drinking, dependence, and withdrawal-related symptoms, researchers frequently turn to experimenter administered methods to investigate how prolonged and repeated exposure to large quantities of alcohol impacts brain and behavior. Vaporized ethanol is a common method used for chronically
