Fungal neglected tropical diseases.

This article provides an overview of the neglected tropical diseases caused by fungi, which include mycetoma, chromoblastomycosis and sporotrichosis. These are chronic infections of the skin and subcutaneous tissue that can be locally destructive, leading to disfigurement and disability. Management of these conditions is challenging, often requiring prolonged antimicrobial therapy in combination with surgical treatment.

Atopic Dermatitis and Allergic Urticaria: Cutaneous Manifestations of Immunodeficiency.

Atopic dermatitis and allergic urticaria are common conditions of the skin that can also be the presenting symptoms of uncommon diseases. Defects leading to immunodeficiency may be associated with atopic dermatitis or allergic urticaria. Unusually severe or otherwise atypical presentations of atopic dermatitis or allergic urticaria may lead to clinical suspicion of an underlying immunodeficiency.

PRP with subcorneal acantholysis: case report and review.

Although the clinical findings of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) are striking, the microscopic diagnosis can be difficult because changes can be subtle and can overlap with other skin diseases. Suprabasal acantholysis can be seen in PRP, mimicking pemphigus vulgaris. We report a patient with PRP whose initial biopsies demonstrated subcorneal acantholysis mimicking pemiphigus foliaceus.

A case report of neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis in a patient receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia.

Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis (NEH) is a neutrophilic dermatosis primarily affecting the eccrine glands and occurs in patients undergoing chemotherapy. It must be distinguished from infections, drug eruptions, leukaemia cutis or other forms of skin diseases. As it is self-limiting, establishing the diagnosis will avoid unnecessary treatment for infections or changes in drug therapy.

Epidermolysis bullosa and the search for the basis of hereditary disorders of the skin.

During the past two years the application of newer strategies of molecular genetics has resulted in the identification of genes whose mutations underlie five diseases of the skin. This is likely to be but the start of an unprecedented expansion in our understanding of these disorders and, most likely, of our ability to treat them.

IL-15 secreted by keratinocytes induces melanogenesis through STAT3/5 signaling pathway in melan-a melanocytes.

Chronic UV irradiation of keratinocytes can cause harmful skin diseases. UVB can cause DNA damage and induce various skin diseases. UVB increases melanin production in mammalian skin. In addition, keratinocytes have been shown to increase the secretion of various cytokines when exposed to UVB. These cytokines are known to affect not only immune cells but also non-immune cells. These inflammatory cytokines are closely related to melanin pigmentation. In this study, we investigated the direct effect of IL-15, a cytokine expressed in keratinocytes, on melanin production in melanocytes. IL-15 belo

Coexistence of T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and Ichthyosis Vulgaris: A Case Report.

Ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) is an inherited disorder characterized by the scaling of the skin. It is caused by mutations in the filaggrin gene. IV is a reactive skin manifestation that may be associated with malignant hematological disease. Its association with neoplastic diseases such as Hodgkin lymphoma, anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, and mycosis fungoides has been reported. T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (T-NHL) with ichthyosis has been rarely reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of T-cell lymphoma with congenital IV caused by a desmoglein 1 (DSG1) gene mutation associated with hyp

Prevalence and determinants of impetigo in Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Skin diseases such as impetigo pose a significant public health challenge in low resource settings. Despite this, there is a dearth of epidemiological data on the prevalence of this condition in Ghana. METHODS: We conducted a cross sectional study in three settings in Ghana: community members in East Mamprusi district in the North East region, a secondary school in Sekyere East district, and inmates of the Kumasi central prisons both in the Ashanti region. Following a period of training, we performed a standardised skin examination on each participant to assess for scabies and i

Agonism of the glutamate receptor GluK2 suppresses dermal mast cell activation and cutaneous inflammation.

Activation of dermal mast cells through the Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor B2 receptor (MrgprB2 in mice and MrgprX2 in humans) is a key component of numerous inflammatory skin diseases, including dermatitis and rosacea. Sensory neurons actively suppress mast cell activation through the regulated release of glutamate, resulting in reduced expression of Mrgprb2 as well as genes associated with proteins found in mast cell granules. To determine whether exogenous glutamate receptor agonism could suppress mast cell function, we determined that mast cells have relatively selective expression

Generalized Pustular Psoriasis and Systemic Organ Dysfunctions.

This review explores the intricate relationship between generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) and various systemic diseases, shedding light on the broader impacts of this severe skin condition beyond its primary dermatological manifestations. GPP is identified as not only a profound contributor to skin pathology but also a significant risk factor for systemic diseases affecting cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, pulmonary, and skeletal systems, as well as associated with an increased incidence of anemia, depression, anxiety, and arthritis. The research highlights the complex interplay of cytokines

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on acute dermatology referrals in a secondary and tertiary care Central London hospital. A retrospective comparison review of pre-COVID-19 era and COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Although Dermatology is largely considered an outpatient specialty, there is an increasing need for Dermatology input in the acute and inpatient setting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dermatology services had to be reorganized to facilitate staff redeployment and minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for patients and staff. This led to an unprecedented increase in teleconsultations aided by clinical images. OBJECTIVES: The main aim of our retrospective study was to analyse the acute Dermatology referrals received in the pre-COVID-19 era and during COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS:

Genetic mechanisms and biological processes underlying host response to ophidiomycosis (snake fungal disease) inferred from tissue-specific transcriptome analyses.

Emerging infectious diseases in wildlife species caused by pathogenic fungi are of growing concern, yet crucial knowledge gaps remain for diseases with potentially large impacts. For example, there is detailed knowledge about host pathology and mechanisms underlying response for chytridiomycosis in amphibians and white-nose syndrome in bats, but such information is lacking for other more recently described fungal infections. One such disease is ophidiomycosis, caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, which has been identified in many species of snakes, yet the biological mechanisms and m

The Role of Autophagy and Apoptosis in Affected Skin and Lungs in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune inflammatory disorder with multiple organ involvement. Skin changes present the hallmark of SSc and coincide with poor prognosis. Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) are the most widely reported complications in SSc patients and the primary cause of death. It has been proposed that the processes of autophagy and apoptosis could play a significant role in the pathogenesis and clinical course of different autoimmune diseases, and accordingly in SSc. In this manuscript, we review the current knowledge of autophagy and apoptosis processes in the skin a

Immunomodulating role of the JAKs inhibitor tofacitinib in a mouse model of bleomycin-induced scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) was hyperactivated in biopsies from patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and in several autoimmune disease models. Tofacitinib, a pan-JAK inhibitor, blocks the downstream signaling of multiple cytokines and has exhibited therapeutic efficacy in various autoimmune diseases, although its immunomodulating property in scleroderma is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tofacitinib on the modulation of cytokine-producing T and B cells, and proinflammatory cells in a mouse model of SSc. METHODS: Bleom

Potential classification of chemical immunologic response based on gene expression profiles.

Occupational immune diseases are a serious public health burden and are often a result of exposure to low molecular weight (LMW) chemicals. The complete immunological mechanisms driving these responses are not fully understood which has made the classification of chemical allergens difficult. Antimicrobials are a large group of immunologically-diverse LMW agents. In these studies, mice were dermally exposed to representative antimicrobial chemicals (sensitizers: didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), irritants: benzal-konium chloride (BAC), and adjuvant: triclosan
