Central nervous system abnormalities were found in seven infants with thanatophoric dysplasia, including two with cloverleaf skull deformity. These abnormalities were megalencephaly, dysplastic temporal cortex, lateral displacement of basal ganglia, dysplasia of several nuclei, and fiber tract deformities. They are characteristic and distinct components of thanatophoric dysplasia.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital condition characterized by the premature fusion of the craniofacial sutures. The Crouzon mouse (Fgfr2cC342Y/+) is a well-established model of this condition which shows premature fusion of the coronal suture. Our group has recently shown that postnatal, cyclic loading can potentially rescue the coronal suture and normalize skull morphology in Crouzon mice. This study aimed to investigate the underlying biological mechanism of the treatment. Wild-type (WT) and Crouzon (MUT) mice underwent in vivo loading sessions. Loading did not significantly affect skull shape

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Lacrimal sac squamous cell carcinoma is extremely rare, and treatment guidelines remain unclear. In select cases, wide en bloc resection combined with prosthetic rehabilitation may offer the best outcomes. This case report advocates a multidisciplinary, consensus-driven approach centered on patient outcomes, with the use of a 3D printed skull with the benefits of gaining insight and providing visualisation pre-operatively. In addition, we want to emphasise the importance of speed in diagnosis and treatment in this report, in order to ensure optimal care.
SUMMARY: Lacrima

The transorbital approach (TOA) is a significant advance in minimally invasive neurosurgery, eliminating the need for the extensive craniotomy and brain retraction typically associated with traditional methods. By accessing deep-brain and skull base lesions through a small periorbital incision, TOA significantly reduces surgical trauma, accelerates recovery, and offers superior esthetics. The well-equipped instruments and navigation system provide a magnified, meticulous view, proving effective for complex lesions near the orbital-cranial junction. However, the technique is challenged by the "

Extrasinusal mucoceles are exceptionally rare cystic lesions that arise outside the paranasal sinuses and may pose diagnostic challenges, particularly when incidentally detected in atypical locations. Their imaging appearance can overlap with other cystic skull-base and intracranial lesions. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with an asymptomatic extrasinusal mucocele incidentally discovered on CT performed during follow-up of a peritonsillar abscess. Imaging revealed a well-defined expansile cystic lesion in the spheno-temporo-orbital region, causing cortical thinning without surroundi

We describe a case of sinonasal glomangiopericytoma (GPC), a rare perivascular tumour accounting for less than 0.5% of sinonasal neoplasms, presenting with refractory unilateral epistaxis. An anticoagulated male in his 60s required admission, nasal packing and unilateral left internal maxillary artery embolisation to achieve haemostasis.Following stabilisation, nasoendoscopy identified a vascular polypoid lesion arising high in the left nasal cavity near the olfactory cleft. MRI demonstrated a contrast-enhancing mass abutting the cribriform plate without orbital or skull-base invasion, which h

Chordomas are rare malignant tumors originating from notochordal remnants that give rise to midline structures of the axial skeleton, including the skull base, mobile spine, and sacrococcyx. Extraosseous soft tissue chordomas near the skull base are extremely rare. We present a case of a 58-year-old Hispanic male with a two-month history of dysphagia, mild odynophagia, difficulty breathing, voice changes, decreased appetite, and weight loss. Imaging revealed a 3.9 cm heterogeneously enhancing retropharyngeal mass. He underwent transoral resection, and pathology confirmed chordoma. He remained

William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954), an American osteopathic pioneer, created the theory of cranial osteopathy, which completely changed the osteopathic field. His groundbreaking theory postulated that the previously believed-to-be-immobile skull bones actually exhibited delicate, rhythmic motions that were essential to general health. At first, there was doubt about Sutherland's work, but with time and clinical success, cranial osteopathy was acknowledged as a separate and important area of osteopathic medicine. He popularized the idea of the "primary respiratory mechanism," emphasizing the

BACKGROUND: Craniopharyngiomas are benign epithelial tumors that arise along the craniopharyngeal duct, commonly located in the sellar or suprasellar region. Infrasellar extension is a rare variant and may involve the nasopharynx, sphenoid sinus, clivus, and pterygopalatine fossa.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 66-year-old male patient is presented to the otorhinolaryngology service due to a complaint of left ear obstruction for the past 4 months. After no response to clinical treatment, investigation with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a heterogeneous lesion with areas of cal

Dental malocclusions are commonly encountered in horses. The objective of this study was to report the normal cephalometric values from skull computed tomography (CT) scans of adult Straight Egyptian Arabian (SEAR) and thoroughbred (TB) horses and to compare differences in the measurements between the two breeds. Standing skull CTs were performed on 29 clinically normal adult horses (15 SEAR; 14 TB) and cephalometric measurements were taken. All 9 cephalometric measurements, as well as the interincisal angle, were found to be significantly greater in TB than SEAR (P < 0.05). TB were found to h

BACKGROUND: Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is an extremely rare disorder characterized by progressive acro-osteolysis. A unique facial structure and deformity of the cervical spine are associated with a difficult airway. Although several reports describe general anesthesia with orotracheal intubation for patients with HCS, there have been no reports of nasotracheal intubation with a risk of skull base fracture. We describe nasotracheal intubation for oral surgery in a patient with HCS.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old girl with HCS was scheduled for dental surgery. Preoperative computed tomograp

A 73-year-old man presented to his primary physician with an ulcerative growth on his scalp vertex. Biopsy of the lesion confirmed the growth to be a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, but the patient declined medical intervention. The lesion increased in size over six months, measuring 12 cm in diameter and 3 cm thickness with erosion of the skull of the vertex. CT and MRI scans showed a large fungating mass with erosion of the skull of vertex without intra-cranial extension, meningeal enhancement, or distant metastatic disease. The patient declined surgical intervention. The

The first dinosaur embryos found inside megaloolithid eggs from Auca Mahuevo, Patagonia, were assigned to sauropod dinosaurs that lived approximately 80 million years ago. Discovered some 25 years ago, these considerably flattened specimens still remain the only unquestionable embryonic remains of a sauropod dinosaur providing an initial glimpse into titanosaurian in ovo ontogeny. Here we describe an almost intact embryonic skull, which indicates the early development of stereoscopic vision, and an unusual monocerotic face for a sauropod. The new fossil also reveals a neurovascular sensory sys

Talaromyces marneffei infection is an endemic opportunistic infection for immunodepression patients, especially HIV-positive patients. Our case describes an unendemic and HIV-negative patient who presented with fever, subcutaneous mass, osteolytic destruction of the skull and subcutaneous abscess penetrating the diseased skull. The growth of Talaromyces marneffei was identified by the culture of the frontal pus, sputum, blood and bone marrow. Due to severe nausea and vomiting during the use of amphotericin B, voriconazole was finally selected for treatment. Two weeks after intravenous infusion

BACKGROUND: Inactivating mutations in the gene for cartilage-associated protein (CRTAP) cause osteogenesis imperfecta type VII in humans, with a phenotype that can include craniofacial defects. Dental and craniofacial manifestations have not been a focus of case reports to date. We analyzed the craniofacial and dental phenotype of Crtap-/- mice by skull measurements, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), histology, and immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: Crtap-/- mice exhibited a brachycephalic skull shape with fusion of the nasofrontal suture and facial bones, resulting in mid-face retrusion and

The enigmatic tetrapod Acherontiscus caledoniae from the Pendleian stage of the Early Carboniferous shows heterodontous and durophagous teeth, representing the earliest known examples of significant adaptations in tetrapod dental morphology. Tetrapods of the Late Devonian and Early Carboniferous (Mississippian), now known in some depth, are generally conservative in their dentition and body morphologies. Their teeth are simple and uniform, being cone-like and sometimes recurved at the tip. Modifications such as keels occur for the first time in Early Carboniferous Tournaisian tetrapods. Achero

Sagittal craniosynostosis (CS) is a pathologic condition that results in premature fusion of the sagittal suture, restricting the transverse growth of the skull leading in some cases to elevated intracranial pressure and neurodevelopmental delay. There is still much to be learned about the etiology of CS. Here, we report a case of 56-year-old male cadaver that we describe as sagittal CS with torus palatinus being an additional anomaly. The craniotomy was unsuccessful (cephalic index, CI = 56) and resulted in abnormal vertical outgrowth of the craniotomized bone strip. The histological analysis
