BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) most commonly occurs in the lungs, liver, and bones. Cutaneous metastases (CM) from HNSCC are rare, with an incidence ranging from 0.7 % to 2.4 %. These metastases can present as single or multiple nodules, or as erythematous macules in various anatomical sites, often mimicking dermatological conditions. CM is associated with a poor prognosis, with a median survival of 3 to 7 months following diagnosis.
CASE REPORT: We report a clinical case of a 57-year-old male with advanced-stage oropharyngeal squamous cell car

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, highly vascular benign tumor that predominantly affects adolescent males. Despite its benign histology, JNA may exhibit aggressive behavior, often invading adjacent anatomic regions, such as the skull base, orbit, and intracranial space, which complicates surgical management due to the risk of severe hemorrhage. The authors report the case of a 13-year-old male with recurrent JNA (Andrews IVB, Chandler IV, Radkowski IIIB) presenting with left-eye amaurosis and a 2-year history of tracheostomy. Imaging confirmed extensive tumor involvement.

The study aimed to evaluate intracranial pressure (ICP) in NF2-associated meningiomas using perioperative optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) measurements. We retrospectively analyzed bilateral ONSD in 48 NF2 patients with 90 operated intracranial meningiomas. The mean ONSD was calculated while considering factors like symptoms of increased ICP, tumor location, tumor-induced venous sinus stenosis, and Simpson grading. 403 ONSD measurements were performed over a mean follow-up of 68 ± 67 months before and 27 ± 35 months after surgery. Tumor locations included the skull base (49%), convexity (22%

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic proliferative disorder, with primary scalp and intracranial involvement being particularly uncommon. The imaging features and clinical manifestations of RDD often overlap with other intracranial lesions, such as meningiomas, leading to misdiagnosis. This study presents a case of primary scalp and intracranial RDD, with a comprehensive analysis of its imaging, pathological, and intraoperative findings, alongside a review of the literature on central nervous system (CNS) RDD and its diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. BACKGROUND: Olfactory groove meningiomas (OGMs) are rare intracranial tumors that arise from the anterior cranial fossa. Because of their slow-growing and insidious nature, OGMs often go undetected until they reach considerable size, making them among the largest CNS tumors at diagnosis. Common presenting symptoms include headache, anosmia, personality changes, and visual impairment; however, these can be subtle and easily overlooked.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a female in her 70s who presented with a 5-week history of progressive visual deterioration, initially affecting t

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma (SNTCS) is an aggressive and highly recurrent tumor with a predilection for anterior skull base location. It continues to pose a challenge due to difficulty in diagnosis and the lack of large-scale studies on optimal treatment strategies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 48-year-old female patient who presented with headache, nausea, and vomiting. Initial imaging revealed a 6.4 × 4.5 cm extra-axial mass in the right frontal region, originating from the superior right nasal cavity. She underwent surgical resection of the tumor and was found

BACKGROUND: Although penetrating, nonmissile, traumatic cranial injuries with associated vascular injuries make up a small portion of all traumatic brain injuries, they can pose a unique challenge to the neurosurgeon. Recently, less invasive, endovascular treatment options have shown promise, but there remains a need for experience with open vascular treatment in certain circumstances. The authors describe the importance of careful surgical planning for open vascular repair of an internal carotid artery (ICA) transection injury after traumatic knife cranial penetration.

Moyamoya Disease (MMD) represents a chronic and progressive cerebrovascular disorder characterized by the gradual occlusion of the terminal portions of the bilateral internal carotid arteries and their major branches, accompanied by the formation of abnormal vascular networks at the base of the skull. In adolescents, particularly in pediatric populations, MMD is a significant cause of stroke, posing a severe challenge to human health and imposing a heavy burden on healthcare systems. Ring Finger Protein 213 (RNF213), as the primary susceptibility gene for MMD, plays a crucial regulatory role i

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the inter- and intrarater reliability of the Manjila and Semaan classification system for the anatomical position of the jugular bulb. The classification system, proposed in 2018, aims to address inconsistencies in reporting that impact communication between radiologists and skull base surgeons and affect surgical planning.
DESIGN: Bilateral jugular bulb positions on 50 consecutive computed tomography (CT) venography examinations were assessed by two neuroradiology attending physicians, two neuroradiology fellows, and two radiology residents.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of large epidermoid cysts located of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) with supra- and infratentorial extension poses significant challenges due to complex anatomy and potential neurovascular involvement. Standard approaches may require extensive bone resection with considerable risks.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a combined retrosigmoid and subtemporal burr-hole microsurgical approach for epidermoid cysts with infra- and supratentorial extension.

PURPOSE: The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) is a minimally invasive and promising modality for treating traumatic superior orbital fissure (SOF) syndrome (tSOFS). Recently, the endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA) has been considered an alternative method for reaching the anterolateral skull base. This study accessed the practicality of using the ETOA to treat SOF decompression using both cadaveric dissection and clinical application.
METHODS: Bilateral anatomic dissections were performed on four adult cadaveric heads using the ETOA and EEA to address SOF decompression. The ETOA proce

Preoperative embolization(POE)of intracranial meningioma is performed worldwide. Although clear evidence of the effectiveness of POE has not been reported in the literature, the technique plays an important role in open surgery, especially for large or skull base meningiomas. The purposes of embolization include: 1)induction of tumor necrosis, resulting in a safer operation, 2)reduction in intraoperative bleeding, and 3)decrease in operative time. Knowledge of the functional vascular anatomy, embolic materials, and endovascular techniques is paramount to ensure safe embolization. Our standard

Background Transsylvian approach is one of the main approaches for a variety of vascular, tumor, and skull-base lesions. Sylvian fissure harbors a lot of critical structures including the middle cerebral artery and many venous structures. If not done properly, the transsylvian approach could cause several complications. Up to now, there is no simple training model for practicing Sylvian fissure dissection. In this article, we describe the technique of using microscissors for the sharp dissection of arachnoid trabeculae. We also propose a new model for practicing Sylvian arachnoid dissection u

The Middle Jurassic is an important time period for the evolutionary history of marine reptiles as it represented a transitional phase for many clades. Notably, in ichthyosaurs, many early parvipelvian taxa went extinct. The Middle Jurassic saw the emergence of the derived Ophthalmosauria, ultimately becoming the dominant ichthyosaurian clade by the end of the epoch. Even though this is an important period in the evolutionary history of Ophthalmosauria, our understanding remains limited in terms of morphology and taxonomy due to the scarcity of vertebrate-bearing strata. Here we present a larg
