Association of alcohol responsiveness and non-motor symptoms in isolated adult-onset dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: About 30% of patients with isolated adult-onset dystonia report an improvement of their motor symptoms after the consumption of alcohol. In this cross-sectional study, we sought to investigate whether the observed improvement is attributable to the anxiolytic, euphoric, and analgesic properties of alcohol, rather than or in addition to its effect on dystonic movements, as psychiatric symptoms and pain frequently occur in dystonia patients and as emotional stress is a well-established trigger for symptom exacerbation. METHODS: We analyzed data from 339 prospectively enrolled partici

Impact of organized and opportunistic screening on excess mortality and on social inequalities in breast cancer survival.

In most developed countries, both organized screening (OrgS) and opportunistic screening (OppS) coexist. The literature has extensively covered the impact of organized screening on women's survival after breast cancer. However, the impact of opportunistic screening has been less frequently described due to the challenge of identifying the target population. The aim of this study was to describe the net survival and excess mortality hazard (EMH) in each screening group (OrgS, OppS, or No screening) and to determine whether there is an identical social gradient in each groups. Three data sources

Perspective: Gestational Tryptophan Fluctuation Altering Neuroembryogenesis and Psychosocial Development.

Tryptophan, as the sole precursor of serotonin, mainly derived from diets, is essential for neurodevelopment and immunomodulation. Gestational tryptophan fluctuation may account for the maternal-fetal transmission in determining neuroembryogenesis with long-lasting effects on psychological development. Personality disorders and social exclusion are related to psychosocial problems, leading to impaired social functioning. However, it is not clear how the fluctuation in mother-child transmission regulates the neuroendocrine development and gut microbiota composition in progeny due to that trypto

Dental disease in the Chinese Yin-Shang period with respect to relationships between citizens and slaves.

Seventy-one skulls from the Yin-Shang period tombs of Anyang, China, were examined for the incidence of observable dental diseases, including dental caries, alveolar bone resorption (an index of periodontal disease), ante-mortem tooth loss and tooth attrition. Because the remains were excavated from tombs with funerary items, the burials are believed to be of Anyang citizens. Our study indicates carious tooth frequency in the Yin-Shang period was rather low (2.9-4.0%). Periodontal disease frequency was 18.3-26.9%, and ante-mortem tooth loss frequency was 2.0-7.5%. To determine the relative pre

Social isolation and depression as risk factors for weight loss of 5kg or more among older Korean adults.

Given a well-known overlapping prevalence of social isolation with loneliness and depression among older adults, this study aimed to contextually investigate the relationship of these constructs with weight loss of more than 5kg in a year, with a special focus on the intersection of living alone and marital dissolution as key dimensions of isolation. The data were obtained from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018, with an adult sample of those aged 65 and older (n = 5,481). A model of acceptance for family caregivers in the management of severe mental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Managing severe mental disorders at home by family members as caregivers is considered the most efficient option compared to hospital care. However, on the other hand, it can lead to the emergence of physical and psychological burdens on the caregiver. To improve their role optimally in caregiving, families will undergo psychological adaptation, reaching the highest level of acceptance. Other factors, such as stigma, social support, social norms, caregiving experience and personal characteristics, influence family acceptance. This study aims to determine a family acceptance model

A protocol to identify non-classical risk factors for preterm births: the Brazilian Ribeirão Preto and São Luís prenatal cohort (BRISA).

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the main cause of morbidity and mortality during the perinatal period. Classical risk factors are held responsible for only 1/3 of preterm births and no current intervention has produced an appreciable reduction of this event. It is necessary to explore new hypotheses and mechanisms of causality by using an integrated approach, collaboration among research groups and less fragmented theoretical-methodological approaches in order to detect new risk factors and to formulate more effective intervention strategies. METHODS: The study will be conducted on a convenience

Understanding the Barriers to Care for Individuals Receiving In-Patient Polysomnography.

BACKGROUND: Fragmented care models for sleep medicine in Canada disadvantage individuals with socioeconomic barriers. This can lead to delays in diagnoses, treatment, and increased health care utilization. This study aimed to explore whether subjects who receive polysomnography (PSG) during hospitalization represent a marginalized population. METHODS: We identified subjects who underwent PSG during hospitalization (inpatient PSG) at an academic hospital in Canada, from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Time, age- and sex-matched control groups were derived in a 2:1 allocation ratio inclu

Where Did You Hear About Us?: Examining How Referral Sources Impact Recruitment and Retention Within a Behavioral Parent Training Program.

Behavior problems in young children, especially among families from disadvantaged backgrounds (e.g., facing greater risk of poverty, social exclusion, discrimination, and violence), often result in referrals to mental health clinics. However, low-income families from historically marginalized racial and ethnic backgrounds disproportionately experience barriers to accessing, engaging, and completing treatment. This study examined the recruitment and referral network of a parenting program providing Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in a large urban academic medical center and affiliated c

MOSAIC (MOthers' AdvocateS In the Community) for pregnant women and mothers of children under 5 with experience of intimate partner violence: A pilot randomized trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and motherhood increase the risk for long-term exposure to physical, psychological and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV; sexual or physical violence by current or former partners). Pregnant women and mothers with children under 5 who have experienced IPV exhibit poor physical and mental health and obstetric outcomes. Depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are the two most common mental health consequences of IPV. There is good evidence that women with good social support have better mental health and IPV outcomes. METHODS: This study will develop MOther
