Examining the association of neighborhood conditions on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms in autistic youth using the child opportunity index 2.0.

BACKGROUND: While neighborhood conditions have previously been shown to have substantial effects on later occupational, educational and health outcomes, this is the first study to examine the relation between neighborhood factors and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children with autism and developmental delays. METHODS: Children from the CHARGE (Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment) Study were evaluated at ages 2-5 years and then later in the ReCHARGE (follow-up) Study at ages 8-20 years (mid-childhood/adolescence). Using linear regression, we a

Exploring barriers to and facilitators of malaria prevention practices: a photovoice study with rural communities at risk to Plasmodium knowlesi malaria in Sabah, Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: The control of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria remains challenging due to the presence of macaque monkeys and predominantly outdoor-biting Anopheles mosquitoes around human settlements. This study aims to explore the barriers and facilitators related to prevention of mosquito bites among rural communities living in Sabah, Malaysia using the participatory visual method, photovoice. METHODS: From January through June 2022, 26 participants were recruited from four villages in Kudat, Sabah, using purposive sampling. Participants were male and female villagers, aged > 18 years old. There's no smoke without fire: Smoking in smoke-free acute mental health wards.

BACKGROUND: People who smoke with serious mental illness carry disproportionate costs from smoking, including poor health and premature death from tobacco-related illnesses. Hospitals in New Zealand are ostensibly smoke-free; however, some mental health wards have resisted implementing this policy. AIM: This study explored smoking in acute metal health wards using data emerging from a large sociological study on modern acute psychiatric units. METHODS: Eighty-five in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff and service users from four units. Data were analysed using a soci

Emerging themes in coping with lifetime stress and implication for stress management education.

BACKGROUND: Adults with adverse childhood experiences and exposure to adverse life events experience a diverse array of physical, mental, and social health problems across their lifespan. Adult exposure to emotional trauma, physical injury, or other adverse life events may result in the development of post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. Understanding individuals' response to stress and their coping strategies is as important as the stimulus or the causes of the stress for effective stress management interventions. METHODS: This is a mixed quantitative and qualitative onl

Emerging technologies and their impact on disability.

Technological innovation is transforming the prevalence and functional impact of child disability, the scale of social disparities in child disability, and perhaps the essential meaning of disability in an increasingly technology-dominated world. In this article, Paul Wise investigates several specific facets of this transformation. He begins by showing how technological change influences the definition of disability, noting that all technology attempts to address some deficiency in human capacity or in the human condition. Wise then looks at the impact of technology on childhood disabilities.

Mouse behavioral assays relevant to the symptoms of autism.

While the cause of autism remains unknown, the high concordance between monozygotic twins supports a strong genetic component. The importance of genetic factors in autism encourages the development of mutant mouse models, to advance our understanding of biological mechanisms underlying autistic behaviors. Mouse models of human neuropsychiatric diseases are designed to optimize (i) face validity (resemblance to the human symptoms) (ii) construct validity (similarity to the underlying causes of the disease) and (iii) predictive validity (expected responses to treatments that are effective in the

Agro-economic impact of cattle cloning.

The purpose of this paper is to review the economic and social implications of cloned cattle, their products, and their offspring as related to production agriculture. Cloning technology in cattle has several applications outside of traditional production agriculture. These applications can include bio-medical applications, such as the production of pharmaceuticals in the blood or milk of transgenic cattle. Cloning may also be useful in the production of research models. These models may or may not include genetic modifications. Uses in agriculture include many applications of the technology.

Identifying subgroups of college students at risk of suicide: the impact of Andersen's model on help-seeking intentions and the role of others' positive help-seeking experiences.

BACKGROUND: This study examines mental health services among college students at risk of suicide within Chinese collectivist culture, focusing on the subgroup heterogeneity of help-seeking willingness as outlined by Andersen's model. By incorporating social learning theory, it highlights the significant role of informal social networks in help-seeking decisions in this cultural context, thereby expanding Andersen's model applicability in suicide prevention and providing evidence for targeted campus psychological intervention strategies. METHODS: A survey of 2,447 Chinese students applied Ande

Synaptic Proteome Divergence in the Prefrontal Cortex of Tame and Aggressive Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes).

The biological mechanisms behind aggressive and affiliative behaviors are difficult to pinpoint. In the Farm-Fox Experiment, conventional foxes were selectively bred since 1959 in two different directions, one for tame and another for aggressive response to humans. The distinct differences in social behavior of tame, aggressive, and conventional populations are genetically based and the three populations live in conditions that control for factors that could impact social reactions, such as environment and social experiences. Genomic and transcriptomic studies of genetic differences among the

Effect of stressors on depressive mood among long-term high-altitude workers: a moderated mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diathesis-stress theory of depression is well known, which stresses that stressor is an inducing factor for depression in general population. High altitude, a combination of variety of stressors, is a special environment that may cultivate more depression. However, how different types of stressors contribute to depression and its underlying mechanisms in high-altitude populations remain unrevealed. The study aimed to reveal the effect of different stressors on depressive mood among long-term high-altitude workers in China and further explore the mediation of emotion regulation and

Phenotypes of successful living among adolescents with HIV in Rwanda: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV remains a major public health concern globally, and 85% of adolescents with HIV (AWH) live in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Despite advances in treatment and prevention efforts, adolescents continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV and are a group with poor adherence to antiretroviral medication. We identified phenotypes of successful living among adolescents with HIV in Rwanda. METHODS: A multi-stage stratified random sampling was used to collect data from 300 AWH using a validated and piloted questionnaire from four provinces and Kigali City in Rwanda. Data were collecte

Comparative synthesis of sociocultural and political influences (SPIs) on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy: an interdisciplinary systematic review.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy has been shaped by diverse sociocultural and political influences (SPIs), rendering it a multifaceted and context-specific issue. Various studies spanning different academic domains have endeavoured to dissect these diverse SPIs, revealing that the impact of a particular influencer can vary significantly depending on the context and disciplinary interpretation. However, prevailing review literature has predominantly focused on enumerating influential factors without providing in-depth contextual backgrounds or disciplinary interpretations. Additionally, a

Clinician-Reported Person-Centered Culturally Responsive Practices for Youth with OCD and Anxiety.

Background: Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (Ex-CBT) is widely seen as the gold-standard treatment for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, minoritized youth are underrepresented in efficacy studies, raising questions about the applicability of Ex-CBT to minoritized youth. Effectiveness data suggest systematic adaptation of Ex-CBT to address youth culture and context is likely needed, and many clinicians make adaptations and augmentations in practice. However, research on the specific strategies clinicians use to address their youth clients' culture and context wit

Beyond the ODI: Qualitative Factors That Contribute to Patient Satisfaction After Lumbar Surgery Despite Failure to Achieve MCID or PASS.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study with a prospective qualitative component. OBJECTIVE: To identify themes contributing to satisfaction following lumbar surgery in patients who improved on the global rating of change (GRC) but did not achieve the ODI MCID or PASS. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Outcomes after lumbar surgery are often evaluated using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), minimal clinically important difference (MCID), and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS). However, these quantitative metrics fail to capture "qualitative" measures of satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Communities organizing to promote equity: engaging local communities in public health responses to health inequities exacerbated by COVID-19-protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted rural and under-resourced urban communities in Kansas. The state's response to COVID-19 has relied on a highly decentralized and underfunded public health system, with 100 local health departments in the state, few of which had prior experience engaging local community coalitions in a coordinated response to a public health crisis. METHODS: To improve the capacity for local community-driven responses to COVID-19 and other public health needs, the University of Kansas Medical Center, in partnership with the Kansas Department of

Differential change in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of loneliness, socialization, and mental well-being.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in mental health issues and psychological distress, disruption to work/studying conditions, and social isolation particularly among young adults. Changes in these factors are differentially associated with alcohol use. Moreover, the relationship between these factors are bidirectional and may have fluctuated throughout the different phases of the pandemic. However, studies focusing on young adults had conflicting results, short follow-up periods, and lacked comprehensive data to describe underlying mechanisms. METHODS: 1067 young adults parti
