Some factors affecting mother-child relationships following low birthweight delivery in a Nigerian sociocultural environment.

Twenty mothers with low birthweight babies, cared for in neonatal unit and kept in incubators (as index group) and 20 mothers with full-term babies (as control group) were studied to determine the extent of maternal separation and deprivation following delivery and the effects of these on mother-child relationships. The population was prospectively sampled and an interview method using a structured questionnaire, was adopted to obtain the information for the study. The result showed a delayed post-partum contact, negative reactions and some delays in maternal attachment in mothers of premature

Hidradenitis suppurativa of the perineum, scrotum, and gluteal area: presentation, complications, and treatment.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is an infrequent inflammatory process that begins as an infection in the apocrine sweat glands. From an initial focus, the infection spreads to involve other tissues of the skin and adjacent structures. When inadequately treated or neglected, the disease becomes chronic with suppuration, sinus formation, invasion of adjacent organs, and occasional malignant degeneration. Social and occupational dislocations are the rule. The peak incidence of the disease is in the third and fourth decades. Blacks and women are most often affected. Our clinical experience with hidradenit

The dynamic changes of postoperative symptoms in lower limb Ilizarov bone transport patients: a longitudinal cross-lagged panel network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing lower limb Ilizarov bone transport often experience a multidimensional symptom burden postoperatively, including physical, psychological, and social domains, which interact with each other. These symptoms collectively hinder postoperative recovery, yet their dynamic interactions over time remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To construct a longitudinal symptom network for postoperative lower limb bone transport patients, identify core symptoms that persistently drive changes in other symptoms throughout rehabilitation, and reveal the dynamic evolution of symptom network

Mental health as a non-communicable disease among refugees, asylum seekers, and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The number of forcibly displaced people has reached unprecedented levels, exposing refugees, asylum seekers, and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection to cumulative adversities that severely affect health. Non-communicable diseases - particularly mental health conditions - represent a growing yet inadequately addressed component of this burden, with mental health remaining poorly integrated into non-communicable disease care frameworks. Within the NCD framework, mental disorders are increasingly recognized as chronic, disabling conditions with profound social and economic conseque

Abortion care pathways in Addis Ababa healthcare facilities: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how women navigate induced abortion care pathways is critical to ensuring person-centred, quality reproductive health services. Evidence indicates that persistent abortion stigma, the lack of choices of abortion methods and respectful care during abortion remain a global challenge to reproductive healthcare. Yet there is minimal evidence regarding abortion care pathways. This study explored induced abortion care pathways in Addis Ababa healthcare facilities. METHODS: We used a descriptive qualitative approach, adopting purposive sampling techniques to recruit women w

Exploring the lived experiences and coping strategies of mental health caregivers in Ethiopia: implications for supportive interventions.

BACKGROUND: Caring for individuals with mental illness is stressful, with challenges like stigma, unequal responsibilities, and patient behavior. These stressors impact caregivers' mental health and treatment outcomes, yet little is known about coping strategies in Ethiopia. Therefore, this mixed-methods study assessed the coping strategies, lived experiences, and determinants for coping among family caregivers of patients with mental illness in northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted between June and July 2024. A total of 592 caregivers were selec

Symptom burden in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps or global airway disease prior to biologic treatment: a qualitative study of patients' experiences.

UNLABELLED: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), is a prevalent inflammatory airway disease associated with type 2 inflammation. When CRSwNP coexist with asthma, the condition is referred to as global air disease (GAD). People how lives with CRSwNP or GAD often report a high symptom burden, for example persistent nasal obstruction, impaired smell and taste, disturbed sleep, fatigue, and reduced well-being. While these burdens have been quantified through clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), there is limited qualitative research exploring how these peop

Socioeconomic status, reserve capacity, and depressive symptoms predict pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis: an examination of the reserve capacity model.

BACKGROUND: Guided by the reserve capacity model, we evaluated the unique relationships between socioeconomic status (SES), reserve capacity (helplessness, self-efficacy, social support), and negative emotions on pain in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). METHODS: The secondary analysis used baseline, cross-sectional data from 106 adults in a clinical trial comparing behavioral treatments for RA. Patients were eligible if they were ≥ 18 years old, met the ACR criteria for RA (determined by study rheumatologist), had stable disease and drug regimens for 3 months, and did not have a signi

Behavioural Activation for Social IsoLation (BASIL+) trial (Behavioural activation to mitigate depression and loneliness among older people with long-term conditions): Protocol for a fully-powered pragmatic randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a leading mental health problem worldwide. People with long-term conditions are at increased risk of experiencing depression. The COVID-19 pandemic led to strict social restrictions being imposed across the UK population. Social isolation can have negative consequences on the physical and mental wellbeing of older adults. In the Behavioural Activation in Social IsoLation (BASIL+) trial we will test whether a brief psychological intervention (based on Behavioural Activation), delivered remotely, can mitigate depression and loneliness in older adults with long-term co

When Implicit Prosociality Trumps Selfishness: The Neural Valuation System Underpins More Optimal Choices When Learning to Avoid Harm to Others Than to Oneself.

Humans learn quickly which actions cause them harm. As social beings, we also need to learn to avoid actions that hurt others. It is currently unknown whether humans are as good at learning to avoid others' harm (prosocial learning) as they are at learning to avoid self-harm (self-relevant learning). Moreover, it remains unclear how the neural mechanisms of prosocial learning differ from those of self-relevant learning. In this fMRI study, 96 male human participants learned to avoid painful stimuli either for themselves or for another individual. We found that participants performed more optim

A mixed methods randomised control trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the journey to social inclusion - phase 2 intervention for chronically homeless adults: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Chronic homelessness is a problem characterised by longstanding inability to attain or maintain secure accommodation. Longitudinal research with homeless populations is challenging, and randomised controlled trials that evaluate the effectiveness of intensive, case management interventions aimed at improving housing and health-related outcomes for chronically homelessness people are scant. More research is needed to inform programmatic design and policy frameworks in this area. This study protocol details an evaluation of the Journey to Social Inclusion - Phase 2 program, an interv

Adolescents' and parents' perspectives on addressing adverse childhood experiences in school-based health centers.

BACKGROUND: School-based health centers (SBHCs) serve many children impacted by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), but little is known about addressing ACEs in these settings. This study explored the barriers and facilitators to addressing ACEs in SBHCs from the perspectives of adolescents and parents/caregivers in the community. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with adolescents (ages 16-22) and parents/caregivers of school-aged youth (ages 3-17) recruited from patient and family advisory groups, primary care clinic waiting rooms, and snowball sampling. We used a thematic a

Momentary persistence of negative interpretations as a dynamic marker of emotional distress.

Inflexible revision of negative interpretations has been implicated in depression and social anxiety. Yet evidence primarily stems from studies employing controlled cognitive tasks that rely on standardized fictional scenarios. To track how negative interpretations persist over time in an everyday life context, this study developed the Daily Life Interpretation Inflexibility Task (DL-IIT) and embedded this cognitive task in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol. The DL-IIT was designed to capture the emergence and persistence of momentary negative interpretations and to test their

Promoting healthy aging in occupational settings: satisfaction with life as a strategic target in the Semmelweis-EUniWell framework.

The growing burden of aging-related disease and functional decline across Europe underscores the urgent need to optimize aging trajectories rather than simply extend lifespan. Achieving this goal requires identifying modifiable determinants that shape biological, psychological, and functional aging across the life course. Satisfaction with life (SWL) is emerging as one such integrative factor, linking adaptive capacity, resilience, and long-term healthspan outcomes. In this conceptual and translational paper, we integrate evidence from geroscience, psychology, and occupational health to positi
