Cognitive behavioral guided self-help for the treatment of recurrent binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: Despite proven efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating eating disorders with binge eating as the core symptom, few patients receive CBT in clinical practice. Our blended efficacy-effectiveness study sought to evaluate whether a manual-based guided self-help form of CBT (CBT-GSH), delivered in 8 sessions in a health maintenance organization setting over a 12-week period by master's-level interventionists, is more effective than treatment as usual (TAU). METHOD: In all, 123 individuals (mean age = 37.2; 91.9% female, 96.7% non-Hispanic White) were randomized, incl

Gender differences in the genetic and environmental determinants of adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: The well-documented gender differences in the risk for depression may be explained by genetic factors, by different responses to social context, or by a combination of both. We sought to assess whether there were gender differences in the longitudinal associations between serotonin transporter promoter (5-HTTLPR) genotype and depressive symptoms in adolescents, and whether macrosocial context plays a role in explaining any observed differences. METHODS: Using data from a nationally representative survey of adolescents, we applied multilevel mixed models to assess, separately for a

Normative data on development of neural and behavioral mechanisms underlying attention orienting toward social-emotional stimuli: an exploratory study.

The ability of positive and negative facial signals to influence attention orienting is crucial to social functioning. Given the dramatic developmental change in neural architecture supporting social function, positive and negative facial cues may influence attention orienting differently in relatively young or old individuals. However, virtually no research examines such age-related differences in the neural circuitry supporting attention orienting to emotional faces. We examined age-related correlations in attention-orienting biases to positive and negative face emotions in a healthy sample

Psychosocial and behavioral correlates of depression among HIV-infected pregnant women.

This study addressed two aims: (1) to assess the level of depressive symptoms among pregnant, HIV-infected racial and ethnic minority women and (2) to identify potentially modifiable factors associated with prenatal depression in order to foster proactive clinical screening and intervention for these women. Baseline interview data collected from HIV-infected women participating in the Perinatal Guidelines Evaluation Project were analyzed. Participants were from prenatal clinics in four areas representative of the U. S. HIV/AIDS epidemic among women. Of the final sample (n = 307), 280 were mino

Community engagement strategies for antimicrobial resistance control and interventions.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat spanning biomedical, social and ethical domains. Conventional stewardship and regulatory strategies, often vertical and clinically oriented, frequently overlook community realities and the systemic drivers of antimicrobial use. Focusing on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), this review blends insights from the literature and authors' experiential knowledge of working on AMR in LMICs and highlights community engagement as an essential yet underexplored component of AMR control. Community engagement encompasses complementary b

Latin American initiatives to improve foot care in people with diabetes: the effort to reduce diabetes-related lower extremity amputations.

Diabetes-related foot complications represent a significant health burden across Latin America, where high rates of lower extremity amputations (LEAs) are driven by limited healthcare resources and infrastructure. Despite these challenges, various initiatives in the region have made notable progress. Programs like the Step by Step Project and the Train the Foot Trainer (TtFT), both key components of D-Foot International, have successfully trained over 4000 healthcare professionals and helped establish more than 125 diabetic foot care units in Latin America. These efforts align with Internation

Care professionals' accounts of providing support and treatment for people with co-occurring alcohol use disorder and depression in the North East of England, UK: A qualitative study informed by complexity theory.

INTRODUCTION: There is an acknowledged care gap for patients with co-occurring substance use and mental ill-health. This study sought to use complexity theory to help make sense of the experiences of people who deliver or commission formal care for patients with alcohol use disorder and depression across one specific health and social care system. METHOD: Qualitative interviews with 26 health and social care professionals in the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System, England, were conducted. Data analysis was undertaken using reflexive thematic analysis and informed by key conce

How Cognitive Reserve Could Protect from Dementia? An Analysis of Everyday Activities and Social Behaviors During Lifespan.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In the last decade, there has been a notable increase in the prevalence of cognitive decline among the elderly population. This phenomenon is further compounded by the concurrent rise in life expectancy, indicating a growing concern for the health and well-being of individuals in this demographic. Dementia has become a disease with a strong social impact, not exclusively limited to its health dimension. It is generally accepted that lifestyle factors and psychological attitudes toward life challenges may serve as protective mechanisms against pathological cognitive decli

Experiences and expectations of residents and professionals of supported accommodations for people with serious mental disorders in Portugal.

PURPOSE: Most studies on supported accommodations (SAs) for people with serious mental disorders have focused on effectiveness. Very few analysed the experiences and expectations of residents and professionals of SAs, which is fundamental to improving care. This study aimed to explore in depth the perspectives of residents and professionals of SAs in Portugal regarding the residents' previous contacts with mental health services, current experiences, and expectations. METHODS: A purposeful sample of 11 residents and 11 professionals from 11 different organisations managing SAs in Portugal was

Interprofessional geriatric education in a post-pandemic world: Comparing outcomes of in-person versus virtual simulations.

Interprofessional education (IPE) enhanced with simulation for pre-licensure health care students can be used to teach a collaborative interprofessional team approach to promote positive health outcomes in the older adult population. Little is known about outcome differences between in-person and virtual IPE. A multi-step, simulation-enhanced IPE was developed based on Wagner's Chronic Care and Constructivism Active Learning theoretical frameworks and implemented in-person and virtually for cohort comparison. Learning outcomes were the advancement of interprofessional collaborative competencie

Barriers to and Enablers of Supporting Deprescribing Benzodiazepines in Older Adults: A Survey of European Nonphysician Healthcare Professionals.

Although physicians are primarily responsible for Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonist (BZRA) deprescribing, nonphysician healthcare professionals (HCPs) can support deprescribing. This study explored barriers to and enablers of BZRA deprescribing among nonphysician HCPs. We surveyed 258 HCPs (63.2% nurses) working in hospital settings across six European countries using a questionnaire based on the Theoretical Domain Framework (TDF). Logistic regression assessed associations between TDF domains and both intentions to support and routine engagement in BZRA deprescribing. Major barriers (TDF items w

Neurotropic Effects In Vivo of New Tryptamino-Triazines Compared to GABA Effectors.

Anxiety and other neurotic disorders are significant medical and social issues, affecting 10-20% of people in developed countries, with an annual increase of over 10%. These conditions are becoming a greater concern due to treatment costs, missed work, decreased productivity, and their impact on relationships and socialization. As a result, developing effective treatments for neurotic disorders is a key goal in medicine and pharmacology. For the first time, we synthesized derivatives containing both tryptamine and triazine fragments and demonstrated their neurotropic activity, in particular th

Association of frailty with workplace social activity, physical activity, and well-being among older employees: a moderated mediation in two income-variant samples.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that frailty is associated with lower physical activity and well-being in old age, but social activities at work may facilitate physical activity and its positive effect on well-being among older employees with frailty. This study, therefore, ascertained whether there is a moderated mediation of the association of frailty, Workplace Social Activity (WSA), and well-being by Physical Activity (PA). METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional design with relevant sensitivity analyses for confounding. The participants were within two Ghanaian samples with different

Synthesis of evidence yields high social cost of carbon due to structural model variation and uncertainties.

Estimating the cost to society from a ton of CO2-termed the social cost of carbon (SCC)-requires connecting a model of the climate system with a representation of the economic and social effects of changes in climate, and the aggregation of diverse, uncertain impacts across both time and space. A growing literature has examined the effect of fundamental structural elements of the models supporting SCC calculations. This work has accumulated in a piecemeal fashion, leaving their relative importance unclear. Here, we perform a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on the SCC, combining 1,823 e
