Does fear reduction predict treatment response to exposure for social anxiety disorder?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fear activation and reduction have traditionally been considered important mechanisms of exposure therapy. Evidence to date is mixed and impeded by inadequate methodology. This study examined the extent to which fear activation and reduction within and across exposures predicted treatment outcomes for social anxiety disorder within a paradigm suitable for their measurement. METHODS: Sixty-eight adults with social anxiety disorder and fear of public speaking completed seven exposure sessions, each consisting of seven speeches conducted in virtual reality. Exposures w

Personality subtypes in adults with social anxiety disorder - novelty seeking makes the difference.

BACKGROUND: Up to now several subtypes of social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been proposed. METHODS: In the present study, we used a cluster analytic approach to identify qualitatively different subgroups of SAD based on temperament characteristics, that is, harm avoidance (HA) and novelty seeking (NS) dimensions of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory. RESULTS: Based on a large, diverse clinical sample (n = 575), we found evidence for two distinct subgroups of SAD: a larger (59%) prototypic, inhibited cluster characterized by high HA and low NS, and a smaller atypic, and comparat

Social Security Measures of Reproductive Health Among Adolescents in India: A Narrative Review.

Adolescence is one of life's most complex stages, associated with unique reproductive health requirements. Adolescents have individual sexual and reproductive health requirements (whether or not they are sexually active or married). Young and developing children have limited knowledge and awareness of the biological changes that occur through adolescence and the illnesses that affect them. We aim to discuss adolescent problems related to reproductive health, estimate the social security measures and associated factors among adolescents, and find why healthcare services are gravely limited in t

Nicotine vaping for relaxation and coping: Race/ethnicity differences and social connectedness mechanisms.

The current study examined race- and ethnicity-based differences in the reasons that youth report for vaping, with an emphasis on understanding the relationship between race/ethnicity and vaping for relaxation and stress/anxiety coping. This work also sought to go beyond examining race-based differences as a cause of tobacco-use disparities by assessing social connectedness factors that mediate relationships between race/ethnicity and vaping for relaxation and coping. Research questions were tested using data from the 2019-2020 California Student Tobacco Survey, a representative school-based s

NPs caring for people who are incarcerated and negatively impacted by social determinants of health.

This article explores roles filled and care provided by NPs in diverse carceral settings along with the impact of health disparities experienced as a result of social determinants of health on the chronic disease burden of people who are incarcerated. Opportunities abound for NPs to positively influence this patient population's health, but specialized education is needed.

Effects of a Dog-Assisted Social- and Emotional-Competence Training for Prisoners: A Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has called for improving psychological interventions and developing new treatments for prisoners. Animal-assisted prison-based programmes have increasingly been used as an approach, but there is a lack of studies investigating the effectiveness of such programmes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of a dog-assisted social- and emotional-competence training on the socioemotional competences of prisoners compared to treatment as usual. METHODS: In a controlled trial, we investigated 62 prisoners that participated in either a 6-month dog-assisted psychotherapeu

The psychosocial dimension of housing in Nunavik: does social support vary with household crowding?

OBJECTIVES: Studies show that living in overcrowded households can contribute to the erosion of social support, which is an important factor in health and well-being. In this study, we examine the relationship between household crowding and social support for Inuit living in Nunavik (hereafter referred to as Nunavimmiut), a region where housing shortages are considered a serious public health problem. We assess whether overcrowding is associated with lower levels of perceived social support and whether this association varies by gender and age group. METHODS: Cross-sectional data are from Qan

Association of Social Support With Functional Outcomes in Older Adults Who Live Alone.

IMPORTANCE: Older adults who live alone are at risk for poor health outcomes. Whether social support mitigates the risk of living alone, particularly when facing a sudden change in health, has not been adequately reported. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this longitudinal, prospective, nationally representative cohort study from the Health and Retirement Study (enrollment March 2006 to April 2015), 4772 community-dwelling older adults 65 years or older who lived alone in the com

Social determinants of tuberculosis: a nationwide case-control study, Denmark, 1990-2018.

BACKGROUND: The global vision is a world free of tuberculosis (TB). Even in resource-rich TB low-incidence settings, we need more focus on the role of social risk factors to end the TB epidemic. METHODS: Nationwide, retrospective register-based, case-control study from 1990 to 2018, including all TB patients in Denmark ≥18 years old (n = 9581) matched 1:3 on sex and age with population controls. TB risk factors were assessed in logistic regression models and estimated by odds ratio (OR). RESULTS: All TB patients had considerably lower socio-economic status compared with controls (P < 0.0001)

Impact of Sociodemographic Factors on Use of Formal Social Services in an Older Swedish Population.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, societal support for older people is the responsibility of the municipalities. However, due to Sweden's current aging-in-place policy for older people, there is a need to assess how the use of such services varies based on sociodemographic factors. The aim of this study was to describe the use of different forms of social services and institutional long-term care (ILTC) in an older population and to evaluate the impact of sociodemographic factors. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional register-based study, including all individuals aged 65 years and older in two Swedish m

Being homeless at the "End" of homelessness navigating the symbolic and social boundaries of housing first.

Housing First (HF) has emerged as the dominant paradigm in homelessness policy and has been praised for bringing an "end" to the homelessness crisis. Others claim, however, that HF facilitates further sociospatial exclusion of people experiencing homelessness (PEH). To advance this debate and understand HF within its larger sociological context, this article examines how HF policies translate to the lived experiences of those who remain in shelters and on the streets. Through interviews with 22 PEH, we demonstrate how HF confronts PEH with a set of strategic dilemmas that we frame using the co

Homelessness at the San Diego Central Library: Assessing the Potential Role of Social Workers.

Nationwide, public libraries are experiencing an increase in "on-premise" opioid overdoses and other issues (e.g., suicide attempts) affecting unstably housed library users. The public library presents a unique opportunity to access an otherwise hidden population. In partnership with the San Diego Central Library, researchers led focus groups, in-depth interviews, and surveys with 63 library patrons experiencing homelessness or housing instability (n = 49) and library staff (n = 14) (January-June 2019). Using a consensus organizing framework and mixed methods approach, the researchers conducte
