Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been frequently detected in polar environments despite the absence of substantial local emissions, raising concerns about long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) and precursor-driven inputs to remote regions. This study characterized the occurrence and distribution of neutral (nPFAS) and ionic PFAS (iPFAS) in air, soil, and moss collected near King Sejong Station, Antarctica. Year-long passive air samples revealed the predominance of volatile fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) in atmosphere, accompanied by short-chain perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) an

Afforestation of post-agricultural land plays a crucial role in restoring forest soil properties and initiating secondary succession processes driven by soil biota. In this study, we compared Mesostigmata communities in even-aged (21 y./o.) stands of Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, and Tilia cordata established on a former agricultural lands, and adjacent fallow field as a reference habitat, located near the Żelazny Most tailings storage facility (Lubin Forest District, Poland). Soil sampling was conducted on 18 study sites (5 tree species and fallow field × 3 p

Linear transport infrastructures are widely recognised as corridors for plant dispersal; however, their role in modifying local abiotic conditions remains less explored. In this study, we examined whether slope-driven, unidirectional precipitation runoff from paved roads is associated with differences in roadside soil-moisture and local abundance of Cochlearia danica, an Atlantic halophytic species currently spreading into continental Europe. Targeted roadside surveys were conducted in Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and Romania, complemented by comparative soil-moisture assessments on opposing side

Opuntia stricta is a highly invasive cactus species that threatens arid and semiarid ecosystems worldwide. We identified the optimal species distribution model (SDM) to predict its global habitat suitability using three hierarchical frameworks: climate only, climate with soil, and climate with soil and human influences. Among five modeling algorithms, Maximum entropy (MaxEnt) showed the highest predictive performance, supporting its use as the primary habitat-suitability model. Habitat suitability was driven mainly by climatic variables, with precipitation of the driest month, isothermality, a

Fusarium crown rot (FCR) of wheat lacks sustainable control. We assembled a cross-kingdom synthetic microbial community (SMC) of Trichoderma harzianum T19 and five Bacillus strains and tested it in nonsterile soil challenged with Fusarium pseudograminearum. The SMC treatment significantly suppressed FCR, reducing the disease severity index by approximately 70%. Wheat growth and yield were simultaneously enhanced. In the rhizosphere, SMC improved soil health by elevating soil organic matter and nitrogen levels by over 50%, while mitigating pathogen-induced nutrient imbalances and boosting nutri

Metribuzin, a widely used triazine herbicide, has been extensively studied for its toxic effects on aquatic organisms, but its impact on soil organisms, particularly earthworms, remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the ecological toxicity of metribuzin on Eisenia fetida, with emphasis on growth inhibition, oxidative stress and metabolic alterations. Earthworms were exposed to metribuzin at concentrations of 0, 5, 10 and 20 mg·kg-1 in artificial soil for a 28-day period. The results demonstrated that metribuzin exposure significantly inhibited earthworm growth, with the mo

Root volatiles mediate diverse belowground interactions among plants, microbes, and invertebrates, but biological and environmental conditions strongly influence their production, movement, perception, and ecological effects. This review synthesizes current knowledge through an integrative conceptual framework linking five dimensions: (1) chemical diversity and biosynthesis; (2) regulation by biotic and abiotic factors; (3) plant internal signaling and resource allocation; (4) ecological adaptation and reciprocal evolutionary interactions with soil organisms; and (5) implications for agricultu

Enhanced rock weathering, particularly using basalt, is a promising method for atmospheric CO2 reduction. However, the complex mineral phases of basalt and challenges in post-application soil separation hinder experimental determination of phase-specific dissolution rates in real-world settings. This study innovatively combines magnetic separation and XRD-Rietveld full-spectrum fitting to isolate basalt from soil and quantify post-weathering phase changes. The normalized dissolution rates of labradorite, augite, hortonolite, ilmenite, and amorphous phases in soil were determined as 4.33 × 10-6

The evolutionary role of fruits has primarily been linked to seed dispersal. However, their influence on the soil and plant microbiomes subsequent to their decomposition has received no attention. We hypothesized that fruit decomposition alters the soil microbiome, and consequently the plant microbiome and performance. We used amplicon sequencing to analyze the bacterial communities in the soil, rhizosphere, and phyllosphere of tomato and chili plants grown with and without their fruit. Fruit decomposition affected soil chemistry, increased bacterial diversity and influenced bacterial communit

This study aims at investigating the efficiency of calcium polysulfide (CPS) as a reducing agent for decontamination of a heavily Cr(VI)-contaminated aquifer. Batch experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the effect of time, CPS concentration and the presence of soil on the reductive behavior of CPS. CPS was used at several stoichiometric excesses with respect to Cr(VI) concentration detected in the contaminated groundwater. In addition, the effect of CPS on other groundwater constituents like nitrates, and potential mobilization of soil elements were also evaluated. Finally, column

This mini-review highlights the emerging agricultural applications of iron oxides, the primary form of iron and one of the most abundant elements on Earth. Rice yield is strongly influenced by soil nitrogen fertility, which is supported by biological nitrogen fixation. Using soil metatranscriptomic analysis and isolation-cultivation experiments, we recently discovered iron-reducing Deltaproteobacteria as the predominant but previously overlooked drivers of nitrogen fixation in paddy soil. As these bacteria utilize Fe3+ as an electron acceptor during anaerobic respiration, we hypothesized that

In order to evaluate the feasibility of using Burkholderia sp. Y4 as a cadmium (Cd)-reducing bacterial agent in contaminated wheat fields, the changes in the rhizosphere soil microbial community and Cd available state, as well as the content and transport characteristics of Cd in the wheat root, basal node, internode, and grain under the treatment of strain Y4 were tested using microbial high-throughput sequencing, step-by-step extraction, subcellular distribution, and occurrence analyses. The results showed that root application of strain Y4 significantly reduced the root and grain Cd content

BACKGROUND: Human population growth and industrialization contribute to increased pollution of wildlife habitats. Heavy metal exposure from industrial and environmental sources is still a threat to public health, increasing disease susceptibility. In this study, I investigated the effects of heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) on kidney and bone density.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil and compare them to the levels of the same metals in Peromyscus leucopus kidney tissue. Furthermore, the study seeks to investigate the imp

Systemic insecticides are applied to plants using a wide variety of methods, ranging from foliar sprays to seed treatments and soil drenches. Neonicotinoids and fipronil are among the most widely used pesticides in the world. Their popularity is largely due to their high toxicity to invertebrates, the ease and flexibility with which they can be applied, their long persistence, and their systemic nature, which ensures that they spread to all parts of the target crop. However, these properties also increase the probability of environmental contamination and exposure of nontarget organisms. Envir

A new species of soil-dwelling entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis hepialus killed up to 100% (mean=72%) of root-boring caterpillars of a ghost moth Hepialus californicus in coastal shrub lands. When unchecked, ghost moth caterpillars killed bush lupine, Lupinus arboreus. Here we describe this strange food chain. Although unappreciated by ecologists, entomopathogenic nematodes are widespread and probably one of the most important groups of natural enemies for underground insects. The free-living infective juvenile (IJ) of entomopathogenic nematodes searches for host insects in the soil.

Aeromonas are water- and soil-borne bacteria rarely reported in Bone and Joint Infections (BJIs). In this multicenter cohort of 34 patients, Aeromonas BJIs were frequently associated with open fractures and high complication (62%) including a 41% amputation rate. These findings support considering Aeromonas spp. among potential pathogens following soil- or water-contaminated open fractures in tropical settings.

BACKGROUND: Cereal-legume intercropping can improve forage productivity and quality at the same time as enhancing soil function and reducing environmental impacts, yet integrative evaluations under low-input conditions are scarce. This study assessed oat (Avena sativa L.)-alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) intercropping for forage yield, nutritive value, soil properties and greenhouse gas emission intensity. A randomized complete block design compared sole oat (80 kg ha-1), sole alfalfa (15 kg ha-1) and oat-alfalfa seed ratios of 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 without irrigation or fertilisation. Previous intercr
