Injury prevention strategies in skiers and snowboarders.

With associated snow sports injury risks being well documented, the scope for preventative medicine is clear. This article focuses on potential precautions taken by skiers/snowboarders and how they vary between different snow sport groups. A total of 181 randomly selected individuals from the Whistler/Blackcomb Medical Centre, Canada, took part in this questionnaire-based cohort study, examining snow sports activity, preventive measures, and protective equipment use. Most individuals were ski area residents of advanced expertise, with 50% having had a previous snow-riding injury. The most comm

Sacral stress fracture in a professional hockey player: a case report.

Lumbosacral pain is common in the general population and among athletes. Many athletes are diagnosed with low back strain and treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, rest, and muscle relaxers. However, the differential for low back pain in athletes is broad and includes many potential etiologies such as: lumbar disk disease, facet arthropathy, spondylolysis, sacroiliitis, tendinopathies, ligament sprains, hip pathology, bursitis, intraabdominal processes, and neoplasm. Sacral stress fractures are included among the many possibilities. Stress fractures are rare in the general population,

The Enduro motorcyclist's wrist and other overuse injuries in competitive Enduro motorcyclists: a prospective study.

According to public opinion, Enduro motorcycling is a dangerous sport. Little is known about overuse injuries in connection with this sport. The study consisted of two phases. Phase 1 was planned as a prospective feasibility study for phase 2. The latter was initiated as a prospective investigation, comprising a random sample of the participants of phase 1. Enduro motorcyclists were interviewed with a prepared questionnaire. Clinical examinations were performed immediately before, and after, a major Enduro race, including pain assessment in the hand/wrist and the forearm using the visual analo

Arthroscopic acromioplasty: a 6- to 10-year follow-up.

Arthroscopic acromioplasty has become a common procedure for the treatment of chronic impingement syndrome. Short-term studies have consistently shown good results; however, long-term data have not previously been reported in the literature. Of 102 consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopic acromioplasty at our institution from 1984 to 1988, 82 patients (83 shoulders) were available for evaluation. The patients were reviewed after a mean of 8 years, 5 months from their original surgery. There were 16 failures (19%) with unsatisfactory results following surgery; 13 patients (15%) required fur

A Pilot Survey Study of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female University Athletes.

Introduction Female sports players are at increased risk of soft tissue knee injuries (STKIs) compared to their male counterparts. Injury prevention programs effectively reduce the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injuries. This pilot study, therefore, aimed to examine the prevalence, type, and management of STKIs within a population of female university sports players at the University of Cambridge. Additionally, this study aimed to examine the perceived risk of ACL injuries and knowledge of long-term complications, alongside participation and attitudes towards injury preven

Public attitudes towards gambling product harm and harm reduction strategies: an online study of 16-88 year olds in Victoria, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Gambling has quickly emerged as an important global public health issue. With new technologies used to develop high intensity gambling products and promotions aimed at driving consumption, public health organisations and researchers, community groups, and politicians have argued for a range of regulatory and education measures aimed at reducing gambling harm. However, there has been limited research seeking to understand community perceptions of the harms associated with gambling products and environments, and the level of community support for strategies designed to prevent and re

High satisfaction yet decreased activity 4 years after transphyseal ACL reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: ACL injuries in preteens and teens are common occurrences. Reconstruction is believed to be optimum treatment for those wishing to return to running, cutting, and jumping sports. Rates of reoperation, satisfaction, and long-term return to and maintenance of preinjury activity after ACL reconstruction in young athletes are important information for physicians, patients, and parents. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this study were to address the following questions in this skeletally immature patient population undergoing ACL reconstruction: (1) What is the reinjury rate and the

Musculoskeletal recovery 5 years after severe injury: long term problems are common.

Five years after severe injury (ISS>15), usually involving several body regions, 158 patients were assessed regarding their musculo-skeletal recovery. An earlier paper in this journal about this study 'Injury 29 (1998) 55' showed that when considering the main body regions causing long term disability, 45% were due to bony injuries to the extremities, pelvis and shoulder girdle. We analysed these body areas regarding the degrees of disability and pain and also for problems with activities of daily living, work, sport and mobility. All patients with unstable pelvic fractures had moderate or sev

Prevalence and Predictors of Cardiac Troponin Elevations Following Exercise: a Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Meta-regression.

AIMS: Myocardial injury is defined by cardiac troponin (cTn) elevations exceeding the upper reference limit (URL) and serves as a diagnostic criterion for myocardial infarction. However, exercise can also elevate cTn, complicating interpretation. We aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of cTn elevations following exercise. METHODS: We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis of post-exercise cTn elevations above the assay-specific URL. Associations between prespecified covariates and the prevalence of elevated post-exercise cTn were assessed using multilevel mixed-effects meta-reg

Novel golf prosthesis for bilateral upper limb loss: design, fabrication, and biomechanical evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with bilateral upper limb loss face substantial barriers to independence and recreational participation. Adaptive sports can enhance psychological and physical well-being, yet few prosthetic devices are specifically designed or biomechanically evaluated for use in adaptive sports. Golf demands coordinated motion, stability, and dynamic control, often exceeding the capabilities of most traditional prostheses. Custom prosthetic solutions remain essential for enabling meaningful participation. This study aimed to design, fabricate, and evaluate a custom golf prosthesis f

Comparative analysis of lower limb biomechanics during unilateral drop jump landings on even and medially inclined surfaces.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Lower limbs biomechanics during unilateral jump landing, a common sports maneuver, is widely studied in research. Most studies used an even surface which may not be ecologically valid in sports contexts. There is a need to explore the lower limbs biomechanics during landing on other, more challenging, surfaces. The purpose of this study was to investigate the lower limb kinematic and kinetic differences during unilateral drop jump landing from a 30 cm platform on even (DROP) and medially inclined (WEDGE) surfaces. METHODS: Fifteen healthy participants were recruited to tak
