Dysfunctional information processing in individuals with acute exposure to sexual abuse: An ERP study.

Acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may occur after traumatic event and also cause significant life time impairment. P300 event-related potential (ERP) is a potential biological marker for PTSD and can reflect cognitive impairment in information processing and attention. Despite the usefulness of ERP, there are few attempts to reveal relationships between ASD and P300. In the present study, we aimed to determine if the P300 of the patients who were the victims of sexual abuse reflected the quantitative trait of ASD or if P300 is applicable as a state marker for

Maltreatment type, exposure characteristics, and mental health outcomes among clinic referred trauma-exposed youth.

Building upon prior research documenting differential effects of psychological maltreatment, physical, and sexual abuse on youth mental health outcomes (Spinazzola et al., 2014), the present study sought to clarify the relative predictive contributions of type of maltreatment compared to salient exposure characteristics. The sample included 5058 clinic-referred youth from the Core Dataset (CDS) of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) with lifetime histories of exposure to one or more of three specific types of maltreatment: psychological maltreatment (PM), physical abuse (PA), a

Patterns of attentional and cognitive biases in community trauma survivors: an eye tracking study.

Introduction: This study investigated the associations between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and patterns of attentional and cognitive biases in trauma survivors.Method: Participants were assessed for trauma and completed two self-report measures to assess depression and PTSD severity. Participants completed an eye-tracking task where 45 sentence stems and 45 plausible word pair endings (one positive and one dysphoric) were presented. Sentences were related to either one's beliefs about the world or the self. Eyelink 2000® measured the amount of time participants looked at t

Genetic heritage of war: exploring transgenerational inheritance of PTSD and its molecular background.

This review article summarizes the available data about the potential link between war-related trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and epigenetic alterations that could manifest in future generations. DNA methylation variations in stress-related genes such FKBP5, NR3C1, NR3C2, BDNF, and SLC6A4 have been seen in parents and/or their offspring in populations exposed to genocide, conflict, or combat. Certain results point to timing-dependent or parent-specific patterns, especially when maternal stress occurs during pregnancy. Results, however, are not consistent; some studies have fo

Cannabidiol modulates spontaneous recovery through distinct and conserved transcriptomic signatures in mPFC subregions.

Cannabidiol (CBD) has shown therapeutic potential for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by reducing spontaneous recovery (SR), yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined the effects of CBD on SR in male and female mice and found greater behavioral efficacy in males. To uncover the molecular basis of these effects, we performed transcriptomic profiling of the prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) subregions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We identified distinct and overlapping SR-associated gene sets in each subregion, and CBD shifted the expression of a significant sub

Examining the utility of digital phenotyping for the prediction of intrusive experiences.

Background: Intrusive experiences related to witnessing a traumatic event are the core symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and have been shown to be predicted by peritraumatic emotional arousal. However, research into the role of peritraumatic arousal in the development of intrusions has been limited by a reliance on self-report scales. Objective: This study aimed to examine whether facial, focal, and language phenotypes of peritraumatic emotional arousal could also contribute to the prediction of intrusive experiences.Method: This longitudinal study recruited university students

Treatment effects of psychological interventions on self-harm in individuals with PTSD: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: There is robust evidence reflecting that individuals with PTSD are significantly more at risk of engaging in self-harm and suicidal behaviours. Trauma-focused interventions for PTSD, however, predominantly focus on PTSD symptomology-related outcomes. Therefore, there is a dearth of knowledge regarding the treatment effects of psychological interventions in individuals with PTSD examining self-harm-related outcomes. This evidence synthesis will identify studies that investigate interventional effects on self-harm, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), and suicide attempts. METHODS: A co

Posttraumatic Stress Dynamics and 15-Year Persistence in Great East Japan Earthquake Survivors.

IMPORTANCE: Long-term persistence of posttraumatic stress reactions (PTSRs) is a major public health challenge, yet early prognostic markers for decadal outcomes remain poorly characterized. Specifically, the importance of early symptom fluctuations compared with initial cross-sectional severity is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether early postdisaster symptom dynamics within 1 year are associated with persistent, clinically meaningful PTSRs 15 years after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). Neuroimmune mechanisms in PTSD: inflammatory heterogeneity, circuit dysfunction, and biomarker-based subtypes.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by exaggerated fear response, anxiety, hyperarousal and sleep disturbances. One of the major pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of PTSD is the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the development of the disease remain poorly understood due to the heterogeneity of the clinical symptoms and disease course. There is emerging evidence that peripheral immune signaling, endocrine regulation, and glial-vascular interactions play a role in modulati

Association of Intrusive Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms With Elevated C-Reactive Protein Levels in World Trade Center Responders.

Objective: Greater severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms has been linked to elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation. The association between PTSD symptoms and CRP levels has been difficult to interpret due to confounding associations between CRP levels and medical comorbidities associated with PTSD and heterogeneity of trauma exposures and PTSD symptoms. The objective of this study was to characterize the relation between clinician-rated PTSD symptom dimensions, medical conditions, and CRP levels among individuals exposed to the World Trade Cent

Associations between cognitive reserve, traumatic events, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and mid- to late-life cognitive performance.

Exposure to potentially traumatic events is common across the lifespan, yet individual differences in cognitive outcomes following trauma exposure in older adults remain poorly understood. Cognitive reserve (CR) may protect against trauma-related cognitive deficits, but CR's moderating role in relationships between trauma exposure, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and cognition is unclear. We examined 745 community-dwelling middle-aged to older adults (50-86 years, mean age = 64.5, 69.1% female) who completed assessments of traumatic event exposure (Life Events Checklist for DSM-5), post

Cardiovascular risk and allostatic load in PTSD: The role of cumulative trauma and resilience in affected and trauma-exposed adults.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves dysregulation of stress-sensitive biological systems due to repeated trauma exposure, predisposing individuals to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Allostatic load (AL), an indicator of maladaptive stress responses, could shed light on the underlying biological mechanisms. We determined whether CVD risk and AL were associated with trauma load and resilience in women with PTSD and trauma-exposed controls (TEC). METHODS: Adults with PTSD N = 114 and TEC N = 95 were administered the Clinician Administ

Patterns of Psychological Aggression and Marital Satisfaction Among Female Spouses of Men With Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms.

Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are a risk factor for using intimate partner aggression (IPA), which has mainly been assessed from the male partner's perspective. In the current study, we compared the rates and levels of using and experiencing psychological IPA as reported by female spouses of men with PTSS. In addition, we examined the mediating role of psychological IPA in the association between men's level of PTSS and female spouses' marital satisfaction. The study was based on 40 heterosexual couples who came for an assessment at a posttraumatic stress disorder couples clinic in Isr
