An investigation of the effect of brain atrophy on brain injury in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is estimated that the average prevalence of MS is 35.9 cases per 100,000 and a total of 2.8 million people worldwide have MS. Brain atrophy is usually seen in the early stages of MS, and its progress is faster than healthy people. The present study was a numerical study that uses the Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model to investigate the effect of brain atrophy on brain injury in MS. Firstly, a healthy model was constructed from MRI images and validated by experimental data.

Characterization of More Than a Third of a Million Toy-Related Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: The toy industry has grown substantially over time, with billions of dollars of toys sold each year in the United States alone. Even after safety considerations, injuries can result. This study examined toy-related fractures in the US Emergency Departments (ED). METHODS: The 1999 to 2018 National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission was examined data for fractures involving a toy-related injury. The incidence, trends, and anatomic locations for such fractures were assessed. RESULTS: In total, 347,135 toy-related fractures were ide

Difference in topographic morphology of optic nerve head and neuroretinal rim between normal tension glaucoma and central retinal artery occlusion.

Although central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) has its own defining pathomechanism and clinical characteristics, morphologic feature of the optic nerve head (ONH) during its later stage is not diagnostic, which makes it difficult to differentiate CRAO from other optic neuropathies. This cross-sectional study was performed to investigate the differences in the topographic morphology of the ONH in eyes with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and CRAO. Thirty-one eyes with NTG; 31 eyes with CRAO; and 31 healthy fellow eyes of the subjects with CRAO were included. ONH morphology was evaluated by meas

Feasibility and potential of a bedside mini-EEG for diagnosing delirium superimposed on dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD) is difficult to diagnose because symptoms of delirium might be interpreted as symptoms of dementia. To improve diagnostic accuracy, we investigated the potential of a brief point-of-care EEG measurement. METHODS: Thirty older patients were included, all with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (i.e. dementia) according to DSM-5 criteria. EEG was registered at right prefrontal and right temporal site, with eyes either open or closed for three minutes, simultaneously with the Discomfort Scale for Dementia of Alzheimer Type. The Confusion Assessment M

Autosomal Dominant Gyrate Atrophy-Like Choroidal Dystrophy Revisited: 45 Years Follow-Up and Association with a Novel C1QTNF5 Missense Variant.

We present a long-term follow-up in autosomal dominant gyrate atrophy-like choroidal dystrophy (adGALCD) and propose a possible genotype/phenotype correlation. Ophthalmic examination of six patients from two families revealed confluent areas of choroidal atrophy resembling gyrate atrophy, starting in the second decade of life. Progression continued centrally, reaching the fovea at about 60 years of age. Subretinal deposits, retinal pigmentation or choroidal neovascularization as seen in late-onset retinal degeneration (LORD) were not observed. Whole genome sequencing revealed a novel missense

Nanotherapeutic approach to treat diabetic foot ulcers using tissue-engineered nanofiber skin substitutes: A review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease associated with long-term multisystem complications, among which nonhealing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are recognized as major cause of morbidity and mortality. Treating DFUs with surgical procedures such as synthetic or biological skin grafts or skin substitutes has several limitations, where none of the currently available skin substitutes is ideal. METHODS: OVID/Medline and PubMed databases were searched using the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) or Title/Abstract words ("diabetic foot ulcers", "skin substitutes", an

Change in Nutritional Status and Dysphagia after Resection of Head and Neck Cancer.

Nutritional status is well-known to influence patient recovery after resection of head and neck cancer (HNC). The influence of preoperative nutritional status on dysphagia was assessed in patients who underwent surgical resection of HNC along with the assessment of nutritional status during the acute and subacute phases. Eighty-six patients underwent surgical resection and dysphagia assessments (repetitive saliva-swallowing test, water-swallowing test, and functional oral intake scale) and had their tongue pressure assessed five times (before surgery, after 1-2 weeks, and 1, 2, and 3 months af

Effects of Spaceflight Stressors on Brain Volume, Microstructure, and Intracranial Fluid Distribution.

Astronauts are exposed to elevated CO2 levels onboard the International Space Station. Here, we investigated structural brain changes in 11 participants following 30-days of head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR) combined with 0.5% ambient CO2 (HDBR + CO2) as a spaceflight analog. We contrasted brain changes observed in the HDBR + CO2 group with those of a previous HDBR sample not exposed to elevated CO2. Both groups exhibited a global upward shift of the brain and concomitant intracranial free water (FW) redistribution. Greater gray matter changes were seen in the HDBR + CO2 group in some regions. A review of methods for preserving male fertility.

Male infertility is responsible for 50% of men's health problems and has always been a concern for personal and social issues. A survey of global statistics suggests an increase in infertility rate as one of the critical issues documented in studies. There are different ways of maintaining fertility in men, depending on their age. In this paper, we review the preservation methods used for fertility treatment in Iran and other countries. Available data were reviewed from Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, IranMedex, MEDLIB, IranDoc and Scientific Information Database and searched f

Noninvasive diagnostic techniques of port wine stain.

Port-wine stain (PWS) is a benign capillary malformation that most commonly occurs in the head and neck. It is present at birth and progresses over time. It is formed by progressive dilatation of post-capillary venules and is associated with hypertrophy and nodularity with increasing age, leading to cosmetic disfigurement and psychological aggravation. It is caused by genetic mosaicism in GNAQ and GNA11 genes. Histopathology is the gold standard for assessment of PWS but it is invasive and may cause scarring. Inadequate characterization of the lesions may predispose to inadequate treatment pro

Birth Characteristics Among Children Diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and Tuberous Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and tuberous sclerosis have different birth characteristics compared with the general population. STUDY DESIGN: We identified all individuals born in Sweden between 1973 and 2014 from the nationwide Medical Birth Register for whom information on both biological parents was available (n = 4 242 122). Individuals with NF1 and individuals with tuberous sclerosis were identified using data from Swedish population-based health data registers. Using logistic regression models, we assessed the associations between these 2 ne

The role of binocular disparity and active motion parallax in cybersickness.

Cybersickness is an enduring problem for users of virtual environments. While it is generally assumed that cybersickness is caused by discrepancies in perceived self-motion between the visual and vestibular systems, little is known about the relative contribution of active motion parallax and binocular disparity to the occurrence of cybersickness. We investigated the role of these two depth cues in cybersickness by simulating a roller-coaster ride using a head-mounted display. Participants could see the tracks via a virtual frame placed at the front of the roller-coaster cart. We manipulated t

Multiobjective optimization on cooperative control of autonomous emergency steering and occupant restraint system for enhancing occupant safety.

Occupant safety remains one of the most challenging and significant design considerations in the automotive and transportation industry. Nevertheless, independently developed active or passive safety systems may lead to unsatisfactory protective performance under the critical driving scenarios. This study aimed to conduct multiobjective optimization of the cooperative controls between autonomous emergency steering (AES) and occupant restraint system (ORS) to explore the potential occupant injury reduction capability as well as mechanisms subjected to a frontal collision. First, a multiple simu

Risk factors for the development of degenerative cervical myelopathy: a review of the literature.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) encompasses various pathological conditions causing spinal cord (SC) impairment, including spondylosis (multiple level degeneration), degenerative disc disease (DDD), ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF). It is considered the most common cause of SC dysfunction among the adult population. The degenerative phenomena of DDD, spondylosis, OPLL and OLF, is likely due to both inter-related and distinct factors. Age, cervical alignment, and range of motion, as well as congenital factors such
