White dots: the in-vitro generation of trichorrhexis nodosa and its comparison in different hair types.

Trichorrhexis nodosa (TN) is a common hair disorder in which small defects, often called "white dots", develop along the hair shaft, leading to degradation in the hair's texture and appearance and, in some cases, significant hair loss. The condition is well documented in the clinical literature but until now there has been no laboratory test able to simulate the condition in such a way as to distinguish between healthy hair and that of TN sufferers. Following the only previous work in the area (Owens and Chernosky, 1966) we developed equipment which was able to generate the characteristic whit

A preliminary descriptive report of the longevity of the effects of Swedish Massage therapy for subjects with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a prevalent and costly disorder, and many patients may prefer non-traditional treatment. A proof-of-concept study demonstrated the efficacy of Swedish Massage Therapy (SMT) as a monotherapy for treatment of GAD. Subjects were followed-up 6-12 months after study completion to evaluate post-treatment outcome. METHODS: Subjects were enrolled into a randomized, single-masked clinical trial between March of 2012 and May of 2013. Forty-seven untreated subjects with DSM-IV diagnosis of GAD were randomly assigned to 6 weeks of twice-a-week light touch

Increase of stiffness in plantar fat tissue in diabetic patients.

Plantar soft tissue stiffening in diabetes leads to a risk of developing ulcers. There are relatively few studies providing methods for quantifying the mechanical properties of skin and fat in the plantar tissue of diabetic patients. Previous studies used linear or non-linear single layer deformable models or linear multi-layer models. This study aimed to investigate the mechanical properties of plantar soft tissue using multi-layer, non-linear models to estimate more accurate mechanical properties in the plantar tissues of diabetic patients. Ten healthy young (HY) subjects, ten healthy old (H

Numerical investigation of patient-specific thoracic aortic aneurysms and comparison with normal subject via computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Vascular hemodynamics play an important role in cardiovascular diseases. This work aimed to investigate the effects of an increase in ascending aortic diameter (AAD) on hemodynamics throughout a cardiac cycle for real patients. In this study, two scans of thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) subject with different AADs (42.94 mm and 48.01 mm) and a scan of a normal subject (19.81 mm) were analyzed to assess the effects of hemodynamics on the progression of TAA with the same flow rate. Real-patient aortic geometries were scanned by computed tomography angiography (CTA), and steady and pulsatile flow

Vasodilator Stress Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography or Contrast Stress Echocardiography Association with Hard Cardiac Events in Suspected Coronary Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: We compared the long-term outcome of subjects without prior cardiac disease who underwent either vasodilator single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or contrast stress-echocardiography (cSE) for suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Subjects who underwent vasodilator SPECT or cSE between 2008 and 2012 for suspected CAD but no history of cardiac disease were included. We retrospectively compared the association of each method with combined all-cause death and nonfatal myocardial infarction and their positive predictive value (PPV) for angiographically obstruc

Airflow in Tracheobronchial Tree of Subjects with Tracheal Bronchus Simulated Using CT Image Based Models and CFD Method.

Tracheal Bronchus (TB) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the presence of an abnormal bronchus originating from the trachea or main bronchi and directed toward the upper lobe. The airflow pattern in tracheobronchial trees of TB subjects is critical, but has not been systemically studied. This study proposes to simulate the airflow using CT image based models and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Six TB subjects and three health controls (HC) are included. After the geometric model of tracheobronchial tree is extracted from CT images, the spatial distribution of velocity

Decreased mean platelet volume in panic disorder.

AIM: The relationship between psychological stress and platelet activation has been widely studied. It is well known that platelets may reflect certain biochemical changes that occur in the brain when different mental conditions occur. Platelet 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is also extensively studied in psychiatry. The mean platelet volume (MPV), the accurate measure of platelet size, has been considered a marker and determinant of platelet function. The aim of the present study was to search for any probable difference in the MPV of subjects with panic disorder (PD). METHODS: A total of 37 dru

Neuron recycling for learning the alphabetic principles.

AIMS: The main purpose of this paper is to discuss an approach to the phonic method of learning-teaching early literacy development, namely that the visual neurons must be recycled to recognize the small differences among pertinent letter features. In addition to the challenge of segmenting the speech chain and the syllable for learning the alphabetic principles, neuroscience has demonstrated another major challenge: neurons in mammals are programmed to process visual signals symmetrically. In order to develop early literacy, visual neurons must be recycled to overcome this initial programming

Replication of heart rate variability provocation study with 2.4-GHz cordless phone confirms original findings.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This is a replication of a study that we previously conducted in Colorado with 25 subjects designed to test the effect of electromagnetic radiation generated by the base station of a cordless phone on heart rate variability (HRV). In this study, we analyzed the response of 69 subjects between the ages of 26 and 80 in both Canada and the USA. Subjects were exposed to radiation for 3-min intervals generated by a 2.4-GHz cordless phone base station (3-8 μW/cm²). A few participants had a severe reaction to the radiation with an increase in heart rate and altered HRV indicative of an alarm response

Prevalence of lumbar spinal stenosis, using the diagnostic support tool, and correlated factors in Japan: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the prevalence of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) in the general population. The purposes of this study were to estimate the prevalence of LSS and to investigate correlated factors for LSS in Japan. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was performed on 4,400 subjects selected from residents aged 40-79 years in Japan by stratified two-stage random sampling in 2010. The question items consisted of lower-limb symptoms suggestive of LSS, the diagnostic support tool for LSS (LSS-DST), demographic and lifestyle characteristics, comorbidities, the Japanese Perceived Str

Altered processing of contextual information during fear extinction in PTSD: an fMRI study.

Medial prefrontal cortical areas have been hypothesized to underlie altered contextual processing in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We investigated brain signaling of contextual information in this disorder. Eighteen PTSD subjects and 16 healthy trauma-exposed subjects underwent a two-day fear conditioning and extinction paradigm. On day 1, within visual context A, a conditioned stimulus (CS) was followed 60% of the time by an electric shock (conditioning). The conditioned response was then extinguished (extinction learning) in context B. On day 2, recall of the extinction memory was te

Ankle function during gait in patients with chronic ankle instability compared to controls.

BACKGROUND: Despite much research, the reasons behind the development of chronic ankle instability in individuals post ankle inversion sprain are unknown. Chronic ankle instability has not previously been investigated dynamically using 3D motion analysis during walking. We hypothesised that chronic ankle instability subjects would exhibit a different kinematic and kinetic pattern during normal walking when compared with a control group. METHODS: Gait analysis was carried out on fifty subjects (25 chronic ankle instability, and 25 age, gender, activity, and gait velocity matched controls) duri

Cellular hypertrophy in subcutaneous small arteries of patients with renovascular hypertension.

Structural alterations of small arteries in patients with essential hypertension are characterized by inward eutrophic remodeling. However, small arteries in patients with secondary hypertension, as well as in experimental models of hypertension with high circulating renin, are characterized by inward hypertrophic remodeling, which is characterized by smooth muscle cell hypertrophy in animal models. The aim of our study was to determine whether remodeling of subcutaneous small arteries in patients with secondary forms of hypertension is associated with smooth muscle cell hypertrophy and/or alt

A Personalized Recovery Intervention to Support Sleep Health in Emergency Healthcare Professionals.

Optimizing sleep health in healthcare professionals is a challenge, as misalignment between endogenous circadian rhythms and exogenous work schedules undermines recovery, well-being, and performance. This study evaluated a tailored recovery intervention based on cognitive-behavioural approaches for insomnia designed to support recovery to rotating night shifts. In a randomized controlled trial (REST), 72 emergency healthcare professionals were randomized to intervention or control. The intervention combined personalized sleep-wake feedback with stress management techniques. Sleep-wake rhythms

Only the real deal? Actual vs. virtual nature exposure and their effects on affect and cortical hemodynamics in health and major depression.

Exposure to natural environments promotes mental health, but access is often limited. Virtual nature-based interventions may offer an alternative, yet direct comparisons of their affective and neurobiological effects with actual nature remain scarce, particularly in depression. To elucidate these effects, thirty-two patients with major depressive disorder and thirty-two healthy controls participated in a quasi-experimental comparison of 10-minute natural and urban exposure in actual or virtual reality (immersive 360° videos via head-mounted display). Actual-exposure data were obtained from an
