Youth risk behavior surveillance--United States, 2001.

Priority health-risk behaviors, which contribute to the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among youth and adults, often are established during youth, extend into adulthood, are interrelated, and are preventable. This report covers data during February-December 2001. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults; these behaviors contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmi

Overdiagnosis of bipolar disorder among substance use disorder inpatients with mood instability.

BACKGROUND: Among substance use disorder (SUD) patients, mood instability and high-risk behaviors may suggest the presence of bipolar disorder. However, active substance abuse impedes efforts to diagnose bipolar illness validly in patients with mood complaints. METHOD: The authors retrospectively reviewed records for 85 adults admitted sequentially over a 1-year period (August 1, 2005, to July 31, 2006) to a private inpatient dual-diagnosis unit for substance abuse/dependence and mood disorders. A senior research psychiatrist conducted diagnostic interviews based on DSM-IV criteria to ascerta

Building Consensus on the Relevant Criteria to Screen for Depressive Symptoms Among Near-Centenarians and Centenarians: Modified e-Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of centenarians worldwide is expected to increase dramatically, reaching 3.4 million by 2050 and >25 million by 2100. Despite these projections, depression remains a prevalent yet underdiagnosed and undertreated condition among this population that carries significant health risks. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and achieve consensus on the most representative signs and symptoms of depression in near-centenarians and centenarians (aged ≥95 years) through an e-Delphi study with an international and interdisciplinary panel of experts. Ultimately, the outcomes of

Identification of Novel, Replicable Genetic Risk Loci for Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors Among US Military Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Suicide is a leading cause of death; however, the molecular genetic basis of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (SITB) remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify novel, replicable genomic risk loci for SITB. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This genome-wide association study included 633 778 US military veterans with and without SITB, as identified through electronic health records. GWAS was performed separately by ancestry, controlling for sex, age, and genetic substructure. Cross-ancestry risk loci were identified through meta-analysis. Study enrollment began in 2011 and is ongoing

A mixed psychiatric and somatic care unit for trauma patients: 10 years of experience in an urban level I trauma center in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: A medical-psychiatric unit (MPU) is a special ward where staff is trained in caring for patients with psychiatric or behavioural problems that need hospitalisation for physical health problems. It is well known that these patients are at higher risk of complications and have a longer length of stay resulting in higher costs than patients without psychiatric comorbidity. The objective of this study was to analyse the trauma patient population of the first 10 years of existence of the MPU in a level I trauma center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed in 2-y

Successful extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy as a bridge to sequential bilateral lung transplantation for a patient after severe paraquat poisoning.

CONTEXT: Paraquat is a widely used herbicide that can cause severe to fatal poisoning in humans. The irreversible and rapid progression of pulmonary fibrosis associated with respiratory failure is the main cause of death in the later stages of poisoning. There are infrequent reports of successful lung transplants for cases of severe paraquat poisoning. We expect that this successful case will provide a reference for other patients in similar circumstances. CASE DETAILS: A 24-year-old female was sent to the hospital approximately 2 hours after ingesting 50 ml of paraquat. She experienced rapid

Methemoglobinemia associated with metaflumizone poisoning.

CONTEXT: Metaflumizone is a voltage-dependent sodium channel blocker insecticide, which is chemically similar to indoxacarb. Although indoxacarb poisoning is known as a cause of methemoglobinemia, the effect of metaflumizone poisoning in humans is still unknown. CASE DETAILS: A 57-year-old man presented with a decreased mentality following ingestion of 100 ml of metaflumizone, 150 ml of glyphosate and alcohol. Although initial methemoglobin (MetHb) level was slightly higher than the normal limit, it gradually rose to reach a maximum level of 27.8%, on the 19 h after ingestion. After hemodialy

[Sodium azide--clinical course of the poisoning and treatment].

Sodium azide poisonings occur very rarely. The mechanism of sodium azide toxic effect has not yet been fully explained. Despite the lack of an explicit procedure for the cases of sodium azide poisonings, in vitro tests and rare case reports suggest that treatment with antidotes for cyanide poisoning victims can be effective. This study describes two cases of suicidal sodium azide ingestion. Case 1. 30-year-old male ingested ca. 180 mg of sodium azide. On admission to hospital, within 4 hours from poisoning, the man complained of dizziness and anxiety. Physical examination revealed horizontal n

Knife blade penetrating stab wound to the brain--case report--.

A 28-year-old man attempted to kill himself with a knife stab into the parietal area. Neuroimaging showed no vascular impairment except slow venous flow around the knife due to tamponading. After obtaining informed consent, the knife was removed through a craniotomy without new brain injury. Postoperative neurological findings showed no deficit. Follow-up angiography revealed no vascular impairment. No infection occurred. Brain stab wounds cause numerous complications, such as intracranial hemorrhage, injury of important vessels, and infections. Minimal blade movement during removal and precau

Improvement of aggressive and antisocial behavior after resection of temporal lobe tumors.

Seizures associated with temporal lobe tumors may rarely manifest as episodic aggressive behavior. We describe 2 cases involving pediatric patients who presented with histories of unusually aggressive and antisocial behavior. Magnetic resonance imaging identified right mesial temporal lobe masses in both patients. After craniotomy for tumor removal, both patients were seizure-free and had marked reductions in their aggressive behavior. Tumors in the temporal lobe may be associated with behavioral problems, including aggression and rage attacks, which can be alleviated with surgical interventio

Mental Healthcare Utilization of Transgender Youth Before and After Affirming Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) adolescents experience increased mental health risk compared to cisgender peers. Limited research suggests improved outcomes following gender-affirmation. This study examined mental healthcare and psychotropic medication utilization among TGD youth compared to their siblings without gender-related diagnoses and explored utilization patterns following gender-affirming care. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study used military healthcare data from 2010-2018 to identify mental healthcare diagnoses and visits, and psychotropic medication prescripti

Olanzapine: new indication. Prevention of bipolar disorder: unconvincing trials.

(1) Lithium, the standard preventive treatment for patients with bipolar disorder, reduces the number of relapses and suicide attempts. (2) Olanzapine is the first neuroleptic to be approved in France for prevention of relapse in patients with bipolar disorder. Many neuroleptics are already used for this indication but their efficacy has not been established in comparative clinical trials. (3) One placebo-controlled double-blind trial involved 361 patients who were treated just after recovering from a manic episode. The trial was supposed to last 48 weeks, but only 146 patients were treated fo

Final results of nilotinib versus nilotinib combined with pegylated interferon alfa-2a as first-line therapy in chronic phase chronic myeloid leukaemia in France (PETALs): an open-label, multicentre, randomised phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: Second generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have improved response rates in patients with chronic phase chronic myeloid leukaemia (CP-CML). Phase 2 trials demonstrated increased deep molecular response rates when combining second generation TKIs with pegylated interferon alfa (Peg-IFN). This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and the safety of combining nilotinib with Peg-IFN alfa-2a in patients with newly diagnosed CP-CML. METHODS: In PETALs, this open-label, randomised, multicentre phase 3 trial, we enrolled patients with newly diagnosed CP-CML from 27 French academic
