Multicenter Validation of Foundation Model Adaptation for Automated Pancreatic Tumor Delineation on CT Scans.

Background: Accurate pancreatic tumor segmentation on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) is important for staging, treatment planning, and response assessment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although foundation models have shown promise for medical image segmentation, their effectiveness for disease-specific tumor delineation remains uncertain. This study evaluated whether fine-tuning a Segment Anything Model (SAM)-based framework on the target cohorts improves pancreatic tumor segmentation compared with directly applied foundation models. Methods: In this retrospective m

Global-Local Transformer Network for Automatic Retinal Pathological Fluid Segmentation in Optical Coherence Tomography Images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As a pivotal biomarker, the accurate segmentation of retinal pathological fluid such as intraretinal fluid (IRF), subretinal fluid (SRF), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED), was a critical task for diagnosis and treatment management in various retinopathy. However, segmenting pathological fluids from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images still faced several challenges, including large variations in location, size and shape, low intensity contrast between fluids and peripheral tissues, speckle noise interference, and high similarity between fluid and backgroun

Kinetics During the Tuck Jump Assessment and Biomechanical Deficits in Female Athletes 12 Months After ACLR Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Residual interlimb deficits after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) can lead to functional maladaptation and increase the risk of reinjury. The tuck jump assessment (TJA) may offer a more effective evaluation of ACLR status as compared with traditional tasks owing to increased risk of altered landing mechanics, asymmetrical landing, and increased knee valgus attributed to the cyclical nature of the task. However, it remains unclear whether altered TJA kinetics resolve over time or persist through return-to-play phases of rehabilitation. PURPOSE: To examine longitudi

The association between upper limb motor performances and gait dynamics in essential tremor: an emerging relationship.

Essential tremor (ET) is a complex disorder extending beyond upper limb action tremor. Both slowing in upper limb movements and impaired gait performances have been widely described. The present study aimed to assess clinical-instrumental relationship between wearable-sensor recorded upper limb motility, tremor and walking performances in ET and explore their role in disease characterization. A gyroscope taped over the index finger was used to quantify both tremor in three tasks (forward outstretched; lateral-wing; instrumental finger-nose, iFN) and upper limb performances in the iFN. Perception of Cognitive Functions and Academic Performance in Chilean Public Schools.

Understanding the perception that students have about their own cognitive processes is a key aspect that allows for a deeper assimilation of the different factors that affect school performance. However, there is limited evidence explaining the link between students' perception of their own cognitive functions and their academic performance. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between perception of cognitive functions, such as memory, processing speed, attention, execution of complex tasks and nervousness, and academic performance in Chilean schoolchildren from the provi

Deep learning-based cognitive impairment brain imaging analysis: New methods, new technologies, and new paradigms.

Cognitive impairment arising from ischemic stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease presents distinct structural and network-level alterations. Brain magnetic resonance imaging offers a non-invasive and high-resolution approach to assess these changes, while deep learning provides powerful tools for automated analysis. Given that accurate lesion delineation, precise localization of abnormal regions, and reliable disease classification are fundamental to clinical decision-making. This review aims to explore the application of deep learning techniques to brain magnetic resonance imag

DinoFlow: Self-supervised pretraining in flow cytometry enables accurate detection of common hematopathological disorders.

Flow cytometry is an essential component of routine hematological lab testing. Many computational methods have been proposed for the analysis of flow cytometry data, but most have focused on supervised learning for just one or a few specific disorders. To maximize clinical utility, we develop a method that enables identification of multiple common disorders and quality indicators. Our method includes a self-supervised pretraining component as well as a new, transformer-based model architecture. The self-supervised training algorithm is based on the DINO method while the model architecture is a

SpatialESD: Spatial Ensemble Domain Detection in Spatial Transcriptomics.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) measures gene expression while preserving spatial context within tissues. One of the key tasks in ST analysis is spatial domain detection, which remains challenging due to the complex structure of ST data and the varying performance of individual clustering methods. To address this, we propose SpatialESD, a Spatial EnSemble Domain detection method that integrates results from different spatial domain detection methods to improve spatial domain detection. SpatialESD captures both direct cooccurrence patterns and multiscale indirect relationships between clusters, im

Late Presentation of Brachial Plexus Traction Injury After Fixation of Chronic Clavicle Nonunion Mimicking Brachial Plexitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report the case of a healthy 56-year-old male who developed severe neuromotor deficits of his upper extremity after two surgeries for a chronic clavicle fracture nonunion. Initial reconstruction with plate fixation achieved anatomic alignment. Twelve days later, diffuse numbness and weakness developed in his ipsilateral hand. A second (and final) clavicle surgery was then performed to increase the subclavicular space, after which his neuromotor deficits dramatically worsened. Because brachial plexopathy, specifically Parsonage-Turner syndrome (PTS), was considered the most likely diagnosis,

Neuroadaptive Admittance Control for Human-Robot Interaction With Human Motion Intention Estimation and Output Error Constraint.

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is a crucial component in the field of robotics, and enabling faster response, higher accuracy, as well as smaller human effort, is essential to improve the efficiency, robustness, and applicability of HRI-driven tasks. In this article, we develop a novel neuroadaptive admittance control with human motion intention (HMI) estimation and output error constraint for natural and stable interaction. First, the interaction force information of the robot is utilized to predict the HMI and the stiffness in the admittance model is dynamically updated based on surface elect

Foot strike angle as key predictor of multi-plane knee joint moments in sidestep cutting: implications for ACL injury prevention.

Video analyses of ACL injury situations in change-of-direction tasks suggest an elevated injury risk during flatfooted or rearfoot landing. While loading in each individual plane of the knee can contribute to injury, combined loading seems to be the most likely mechanism. This study investigated if knee joint moments are related to the foot strike angle in pre-planned and unplanned handball-specific sidestep cuts performed by n = 51 female handball players. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) with the foot strike angle at initial ground contact serving as the predictor variable was performed

Deep neural networks allow expert-level brain meningioma segmentation and present potential for improvement of clinical practice.

Accurate brain meningioma segmentation and volumetric assessment are critical for serial patient follow-up, surgical planning and monitoring response to treatment. Current gold standard of manual labeling is a time-consuming process, subject to inter-user variability. Fully-automated algorithms for meningioma segmentation have the potential to bring volumetric analysis into clinical and research workflows by increasing accuracy and efficiency, reducing inter-user variability and saving time. Previous research has focused solely on segmentation tasks without assessment of impact and usability o

Texture Analysis Based on Auto-Mutual Information for Classifying Breast Lesions with Ultrasound.

Described here is a novel texture extraction method based on auto-mutual information (AMI) for classifying breast lesions. The objective is to extract discriminating information found in the non-linear relationship of textures in breast ultrasound (BUS) images. The AMI method performs three basic tasks: (i) it transforms the input image using the ranklet transform to handle intensity variations of BUS images acquired with distinct ultrasound scanners; (ii) it extracts the AMI-based texture features in the horizontal and vertical directions from each ranklet image; and (iii) it classifies the b

Influence of experimental pain on the spatio-temporal activity of upper trapezius during dynamic lifting - An investigation using Bayesian spatio-temporal ANOVA.

High-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) provides a detailed analysis of a muscle's spatial distribution of activity. We applied a Bayesian spatio-temporal statistical method to quantify how acute nociception and task repetition alters the upper trapezius instantaneous spatial distribution of activity during dynamic muscular contractions. Ten male adults performed repeated lifting of a 1 kg box between shelves positioned at hip and shoulder heights with a cycle time of 3 s for 50 cycles under four conditions: baseline, isotonic and hypertonic saline injections (nociception) to the right

A single-cell atlas of the airway epithelium reveals the CFTR-rich pulmonary ionocyte.

The functions of epithelial tissues are dictated by the types, abundance and distribution of the differentiated cells they contain. Attempts to restore tissue function after damage require knowledge of how physiological tasks are distributed among cell types, and how cell states vary between homeostasis, injury-repair and disease. In the conducting airway, a heterogeneous basal cell population gives rise to specialized luminal cells that perform mucociliary clearance1. Here we perform single-cell profiling of human bronchial epithelial cells and mouse tracheal epithelial cells to obtain a comp
