Concreteness training reduces dysphoria: proof-of-principle for repeated cognitive bias modification in depression.

A tendency toward abstract and overgeneral processing is a cognitive bias hypothesized to causally contribute to symptoms of depression. This hypothesis predicts that training dysphoric individuals to become more concrete and specific in their thinking would reduce depressive symptoms. To test this prediction, 60 participants with dysphoria were randomly allocated either to (a) concreteness training; (b) bogus concreteness training, matched with concreteness training for treatment rationale, experimenter contact, and treatment duration but without active engagement in concrete thinking; (c) a

Patient education to enhance contact dermatitis evaluation and testing.

Patient education plays an important role in empowering patients who have allergic contact dermatitis. Having the knowledge about a disease process does not guarantee healthy behaviors. Through careful assessment of educational needs, awareness of stages of change that adults go through, and use of resources available to members of the American Contact Dermatology Society, nurses can provide patient education that completes the patch testing process.

Dyscalculia, dyslexia, and medical students' needs for learning and using statistics.

Much has been written on the learning needs of dyslexic and dyscalculic students in primary and early secondary education. However, it is not clear that the necessary disability support staff and specialist literature are available to ensure that these needs are being adequately met within the context of learning statistics and general quantitative skills in the self-directed learning environments encountered in higher education. This commentary draws attention to dyslexia and dyscalculia as two potentially unrecognized conditions among undergraduate medical students and in turn, highlights ke

Active learning: effects of core training design elements on self-regulatory processes, learning, and adaptability.

This article describes a comprehensive examination of the cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes underlying active learning approaches; their effects on learning and transfer; and the core training design elements (exploration, training frame, emotion control) and individual differences (cognitive ability, trait goal orientation, trait anxiety) that shape these processes. Participants (N = 350) were trained to operate a complex, computer-based simulation. Exploratory learning and error-encouragement framing had a positive effect on adaptive transfer performance and interacted with co

The making of an expert.

Popular lore tells us that genius is born, not made. Scientific research, on the other hand, reveals that true expertise is mainly the product of years of intense practice and dedicated coaching. Ordinary practice is not enough: To reach elite levels of performance, you need to constantly push yourself beyond your abilities and comfort level. Such discipline is the key to becoming an expert in all domains, including management and leadership. Those are the conclusions reached by Ericsson, a professor of psychology at Florida State University; Prietula, a professor at the Goizueta Business Scho

What do children learn about biology from factual information? A comparison of interventions to improve understanding of contagious illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Children have been shown to hold misconceptions about illness, and previous work has indicated that their knowledge can be improved through the use of interventions. AIMS: This study aims to evaluate interventions based on the provision of factual information for improving understanding of contagious illness. SAMPLE: The participants were 96 children from two age groups: 7 and 11 years. METHODS: During the pre-test, the children were asked about three contagious illnesses and one novel illness. There were three intervention conditions, differing in the level of factual informati

Anticipating the content and circumstances of skill transfer: unrealistic expectations of driver training and graduated licensing?

There is substantial evidence that driving skills improve during driver training, but the long-term safety benefit of such formal training remains unproven. Restricting the exposure of newly licensed drivers to more hazardous driving circumstances, as in graduated driver licensing (GDL) regimes, demonstrably reduces crash risk, but drivers remain at risk after the restrictions are eased. GDL and most other licensing regimes advocate increased basic training and practice, but thereafter require neither advanced training nor systematic increase in exposure to risk. This assumes that basic skills

Effect of intensive training on auditory processing and reading skills.

This study assessed the ability of seven children to accurately judge relative durations of auditory and visual stimuli before and after participation in a language remediation program. The goal of the intervention program is to improve the children's ability to detect and identify rapidly changing auditory stimuli, and thereby improve their language-related skills. Children showed improved accuracy on a test of auditory duration judgement following the intervention without analogous improvements in the visual domain, supporting the assertion that intensive training with modified speech improv

A case series of group A Streptococcus necrotizing fasciitis in military trainees.

We describe a case series of group A Streptococcus (GAS) necrotizing fasciitis occurring over a 10-week period in military recruits undergoing intense physical training. These cases highlight that GAS may cause life-threatening infections in addition to mild diseases such as pharyngitis. This series suggests that the incidence of severe GAS infections may be increasing in certain populations and it emphasizes the importance of considering prophylactic measures against GAS in high-risk populations.
