Uncomplicated Malaria in Infancy and Neurodevelopment at 1 and 6 Years: Evidence From the MiPPAD Birth Cohort Study of Benin.

In malaria-endemic regions, repeated episodes of uncomplicated malaria during infancy are common; however, their associations with neurodevelopment remain unclear. We examined relationships between malaria frequency in infancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes in early and middle childhood, using data from the APEC birth cohort nested within the MiPPAD birth cohort study of Benin. Children were enrolled between January 2010 and June 2011 and followed from birth to 24 months of age. Malaria was assessed at scheduled visits at 6, 9 and 12 months using both PCR and microscopy, and at unscheduled vi

The prevalence of undernutrition among children in Malaysia: the difference between conventional assessments and the composite index of anthropometric failure.

BACKGROUND: Child undernutrition remains a significant public health concern in Malaysia, with implications for long-term growth, development, and health outcomes. Conventional indicators of underweight (UW), stunting (ST), and wasting (WT), which are widely used, may underestimate the true burden. This study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors of undernutrition among children under five in Malaysia using both traditional measures and the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF). METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using data from the National Health and Morbidity S

Fertility Outcomes in Men with Nonobstructive Azoospermia Due to Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism After Gonadotropin Therapy.

Background/Objectives: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) is an uncommon but treatable cause of non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). Fertility can often be restored with gonadotropin therapy. This study evaluated spermatogenic and reproductive outcomes in men with HH-related NOA managed by stepwise gonadotropin therapy, microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE) for persistent azoospermia, and assisted reproduction when indicated. Methods: A retrospective cohort study included 35 men treated between 2010 and 2022. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), with or without follicle-stimulat

Infertility treatment and the growth of children from birth to 12 years of age: A national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children conceived through infertility treatments may have altered birth outcomes and growth patterns compared to those conceived naturally. However, evidence on long-term growth trajectories, particularly distinguishing singletons and multiples, remains inconsistent. This study aimed to compare childhood growth trajectories from birth to 12 years of age between children conceived via infertility treatments and those conceived naturally, using a large national birth cohort. METHODS: We analyzed the follow-up data (6 months to 12 years of age) from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, an

Postpartum readmission for maternal infection or neonatal adverse events in women randomised to outpatient balloon versus inpatient prostaglandin for induction of labour: a post-trial follow up study.

BACKGROUND: Induction of labour is common, and much has been studied about different methods and clinical outcomes for mothers and babies. However, many trials follow outcomes only until hospital discharge. The recently published OBLIGE multicentre randomised controlled trial of 1087 participants found no differences in adverse events for mothers or their babies in groups randomised at term to outpatient balloon catheter versus inpatient vaginal prostaglandin E2. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate maternal and neonatal readmissions from hospital discharge to six weeks after birth. METHOD

One Milligram Versus Two Milligram Intramuscular Vitamin K to Prevent Late-Onset Hemorrhagic Disease in Young Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of a standard dose (1 mg) with 2 mg vitamin K administered by intramuscular (IM) route in reducing subclinical late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) assessed using serum protein induced by vitamin K absence (PIVKA II) levels. METHODS: This was an open-labeled randomized controlled trial that enrolled healthy term neonates delivered vaginally. Neonates delivered to mothers receiving antiepileptics, anti-tuberculous drugs, or warfarin, and those with a family history of bleeding disorder were excluded. Participants were randomized to receive either 1

GnRH agonist pretreatment in hormonal endometrial preparation: a comparison of two protocols for frozen embryo transfer outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different endometrial treatment regimens on the outcome of frozen embryo transfer (FET). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1,454 FET cycles was conducted. Subgroups were stratified by primary infertility diagnosis (tubal factor, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis) and by the number of embryos transferred. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to identify factors influencing live birth. RESULTS: Our study found that endometrial thickness on the day of embryo transfer was thicker in the gonadotropin-rel

Factors associated with mode of delivery in large-for-gestational-age fetuses: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) fetuses are often associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity. Although suspicion of LGA can prompt closer surveillance and interventions such as labor induction, the actual impact on delivery outcomes and complications remains controversial. PURPOSE: To assess maternal and fetal factors associated with the mode of delivery in pregnancies with LGA fetuses. BASIC PROCEDURES: Retrospective, single-center study (2018-2021) including term, singleton pregnancies with birthweight ≥ 90th percentile (AUDIPOG). Exclusion criteria were prior ce

Perinatal mortality among pregnant undocumented migrants in Norway 1999-2020: A register-based population study.

BACKGROUND: Irregular legal status is a recognized health risk factor in the context of migration. However, undocumented migrants are rarely included in health surveys and register studies. Adverse perinatal outcomes are especially important because they have long-term consequences and societal risk factors are modifiable. In this study, we compare perinatal outcomes in undocumented migrants to foreign-born and Norwegian-born residents, using a population-based register. METHODS: We included women 18-49 years old giving birth to singletons as registered in the Medical Birth Registry of Norway

Associations of free, bioavailable and total 25-hydroxyvitamin D with neonatal birth anthropometry and calcium homoeostasis in mother-child pairs in a sunny Mediterranean region.

Sufficient vitamin D status is crucial for successful pregnancy and fetal development. The assessment of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations is commonly used to evaluate vitamin D status. Our objective was to examine the interrelated biodynamics of maternal and neonatal total, free and bioavailable 25(OH)D in maternal-neonatal dyads at birth and their associations with homeostasis and neonatal birth anthropometry. We analysed a cohort of seventy full-term mother-child pairs. We found positive associations between all neonatal measures of vitamin D status. Maternal forms exhibited a si

Comparative study of pregnancy outcomes in women with inflammatory bowel disease treated with thiopurines and/or anti-TNF: a French nationwide study 2010-2018.

BACKGROUND: Data about thiopurines or anti-TNF use during pregnancy in women with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are reassuring. However, many studies are based upon small sample sizes. AIMS: To assess IBD medication safety during pregnancy. METHODS: Using the French national health database, which covers more than 99% of the French population, around 65 000 000 people, we identified pregnancies ending with a birth in IBD patients in France between 2010 and 2018. Pregnancy outcomes (vital status at birth, birth term, and weight for gestational age) were compared according to treatment exp

The relationship between umbilical cord blood vitamin A levels and late preterm infant morbidities: a prospective cohort study.

The aim of this study is to explore the association between umbilical cord blood (UCB) vitamin A levels and late preterm infants morbidities. We conducted a prospective cohort study of 208 late-preterm infants(from 34 0/7 to 36 6/7 weeks gestational age) between January 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. UCB specimens were collected shortly after birth, and vitamin A levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Prevalence of low UCB vitamin A level < 0.7 μmol/L was 37.5% in late preterm infants. In comparison to vaginal delivery, cesarean section was associated with UCB vitamin A level

Prevalence and factors associated with postpartum posttraumatic stress in a population-based maternity survey in England.

BACKGROUND: Studies on prevalence and factors associated with postpartum posttraumatic stress (PTS) typically do not distinguish between PTS related to childbirth (PTS-C) and PTS related to other stressors (PTS-O). This study aimed to describe the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and factors associated with PTS-C and PTS-O in postpartum women. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional population-based survey of 16,000 postpartum women, selected at random from birth registrations in England to receive a postal questionnaire, including the Primary Care Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Screen.

Poverty, Toxic Stress, and Education in Children Born Preterm.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth, defined as birth before the completion of 37 weeks of gestation, is a multifactorial global epidemic with psychosocial, economic, and physical ramifications affecting the child, family, and community at large. Toxic stress-the results of exposure to adverse childhood experiences-results in changes to brain structure and function that negatively affects future health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to apply the eco-bio-developmental (EBD) model of poverty and preterm birth to the cross-sectional data of the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health to evaluate
