Stressors and rheumatoid arthritis: changes in stressors with advances in therapeutic agents.

The significance of evaluations of stressors in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients was investigated from the perspective of holistic medicine. The subjects were RA patients treated in the rheumatology outpatient clinic. They included 30 patients from 1987, 30 from 2002, and 137 from 2009. To investigate the specific causes of stress, the patients were asked the question, "What do you feel is your strongest stressor?" The same patients also underwent psychological testing and was examined the disease activity. Pain was the strongest stressor in RA patients in 1987, 2002, and 2009. However, the

Increased anxiety during anticipation of unpredictable but not predictable aversive stimuli as a psychophysiologic marker of panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Predictability is a fundamental modulator of anxiety in that the ability to predict aversive events mitigates anxious responses. In panic disorder, persistent symptoms of anxiety are caused by anticipation of the next uncued (unpredictable) panic attack. The authors tested the hypothesis that elevated anxious reactivity, specifically toward unpredictable aversive events, is a psychophysiological correlate of panic disorder. METHOD: Participants were exposed to one condition in which predictable aversive stimuli were signaled by a cue, a second condition in which aversive stimuli we

Internet use by the socially fearful: addiction or therapy?

The Internet has often been argued to have adverse psychological consequences, such as depression or anxiety symptoms, among "over-users." The present study offers an alternative understanding, suggesting the Internet may be used as a forum for expanding social networks and consequently enhancing the chance of meaningful relationships, self-confidence, social abilities, and social support. An online sample of 188 people was recruited over the Internet, while paper and pencil tests were administered to an offline sample group of 27 undergraduate university students, who were regular Internet us

Differential adaptive responses to chronic stress of maternally stressed male mice offspring.

It is well established that stress in early life can alter the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but most studies to date have focused on HPA reactivity in response to a single acute stress. The present study addressed whether stress in pregnant mice could influence the adaptive responses of their offspring to chronic stress. Male offspring were exclusively used in this study. Elevated plus maze tests revealed that 14 d of repeated restraint stress (6 h per day; from postnatal d 50-63) significantly increased anxiety-like behavior in maternally stressed mice. NBI 27914

Cholinergic inputs to the rat medial prefrontal cortex mediate potentiation of the cardiovascular defensive response by the anxiogenic benzodiazephine receptor partial inverse agonist FG 7142.

Consistent with its putative anxiogenic actions, administration of the benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist FG 7142 has been shown to potentiate defensive-like cardiovascular reactivity to an acoustic stimulus in the rat, an effect that appears to be mediated by the basal forebrain cholinergic system. The present studies tested the hypothesis that the basal forebrain cholinergic projections to the medial prefrontal cortex, an area that has been implicated in both anxiety and autonomic control, may be a relevant pathway underlying this response potentiation. Infusions of the muscarin

Opioid peptides and immunodysfunction in patients with major depression and anxiety disorders.

To assess cell-mediated immunity in depression and anxiety disorders and to elucidate whether immunodysfunction might be related to a high opioid activity, a prospective study of patients with major depression (n = 34) or anxiety disorders (n = 21) was performed. Cellular immunity tests, the in vitro effects of naloxone on monocytes, and beta-endorphin plasma levels were investigated. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and some monocyte parameters were determined by flow cytometry. Natural killer (NK) cell activity was studied by cytotoxicity, gamma-interferon production by a standard bioassay

The pituitary-adrenal axis and the different behavioral effects of buspirone and chlordiazepoxide.

Benzodiazepines and the novel anxiolytic buspirone share a common capacity to relieve clinical anxiety but do not share any side effects. Anxiety releases stress hormones and, at moderate doses, anxiolytic benzodiazepines block this release. It is interesting, therefore, that buspirone and other 5-HT1A agonists release stress hormones at moderate doses. Both the U-shaped dose-response curve seen with buspirone in some animal tests of anxiety and its slow onset of clinical action could be attributed to this release of stress hormones. Metyrapone (200 mg/kg), an inhibitor of 11-beta-hydroxylase,

Pain and other symptoms during the first year after radical and conservative surgery for breast cancer.

This study assessed pain, neurological symptoms, oedema of the ipsilateral arm, anxiety and depression occurring in women treated surgically for breast cancer, the impact of these symptoms on daily life and how they evolved during the 1 year follow-up. Ninety-three consecutive patients with non-metastasised breast cancer who were treated during 1993-94 were examined before surgery and after 1, 6 and 12 months. They were asked about pain, neurological symptoms and oedema in the breast scar region and/or ipsilateral arm. Sensory testing was performed, and gripping force and the circumference of

Behavioral neurobiology of inverse agonist FG 7142 induced anxiety syndrome in rats.

1. Neurobehavioral survey of inverse agonist FG 7142 was performed employing a novel anxiety paradigm namely FR-2 Two-Way crossover in a shuttle box. 2. FG syndrome was found to be similar to learned helplessness following shock treatment. Significant increase in mean latency to escape was observed from 0 to 25th trial. Effect of FG 7142 on the behavioral and neurological profile did not deviate significantly from controls. However, a general increase in arousal, darting and sideway movement (weaving) of the head were noted. 3. Drugs with specificity at benzodiazepine (BDZ) receptor site were

The selective 5-HT1A receptor biased agonist, NLX-101, corrects anomalous behavioral phenotype in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most prevalent X-linked dominant autism spectrum disorder, causing a range of developmental problems, notably characterized by mild-severe mood/cognitive dysfunctions. NLX-101 is a highly selective and fully efficacious biased agonist at post-synaptic 5-HT1A receptors, and has shown efficacy for reversal of sensory hypersensitivity and EEG anomalies in transgenic mouse models of FXS. Presently, we examined the ability of NLX-101 to "normalize" (i.e., restore to levels observed in wild-type mice) several aspects of behavioral anomalies displayed by adult male FMR

Does the presence of posttraumatic anosmia mean that you will be disinhibited?

Dispute has surrounded the issue of whether the relationship between anosmia and executive dysfunction in traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be artefactual due to poor ascertainment. Three groups matched for age, gender, education, Full Scale IQ, and the Wechsler Working Memory Index and showing adequate symptom validity were compared: 30 anosmic TBIs (TBI-A) matched for posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) and working memory functioning with 36 nonanosmic TBIs (TBI-NA) and 51 controls. The groups performed the FAS test, the Animal Fluency test, the Stroop Neurological Screening Test (SNST), the Wisconsi

Diazepam causes sedative rather than anxiolytic effects in C57BL/6J mice.

Diazepam has been broadly accepted as an anxiolytic drug and is often used as a positive control in behavioral experiments with mice. However, as opposed to this general assumption, the effect of diazepam on mouse behavior can be considered rather controversial from an evidence point of view. Here we revisit this issue by studying the effect of diazepam on a benchmark task in the preclinical anxiety literature: the elevated plus maze. We evaluated the minute-by-minute time-course of the diazepam effect along the 10 min of the task at three different doses (0.5, 1 and 2 mg/kg i.p. 30 min before

Affective and emotional dysregulation as pre-dementia risk markers: exploring the mild behavioral impairment symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, and euphoria.

BACKGROUND: Affective and emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, euphoria, and irritability are common neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in pre-dementia and cognitively normal older adults. They comprise a domain of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), which describes their emergence in later life as an at-risk state for cognitive decline and dementia, and as a potential manifestation of prodromal dementia. This selective scoping review explores the epidemiology and neurobiological links between affective and emotional symptoms, and incident cognitive decline, focusing on recent literature

Toward a dynamic model of psychological assessment: Implications for personalized care.

OBJECTIVE: The present article proposes a general framework and a set of specific methodological steps for conducting person-specific dynamic assessments, which yield information about syndrome structures and states that can be used to provide actionable information for the formulation of personalized interventions. It is proposed that researchers should (a) determine the relevant constituent inputs for a diagnostic system; (b) measure these inputs with as much detail as possible; (c) assess the correlational structure of system inputs via factor-analytic methods within individuals; and (d) su
