Proteus mirabilis is a common opportunistic zoonotic pathogen, and its ongoing acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes poses challenges to clinical treatments. Human-sourced whole genomic sequencing of human P. mirabilis isolates has been reported, but pig-sourced isolates have not been thoroughly investigated even though these animals can serve as reservoirs for human infections. In the current study, we report a molecular epidemiological investigation to unravel the antimicrobial and virulence gene risk factors for P. mirabilis contamination in 9 pig farms in 3 different cities in Zhej

INTRODUCTION: Clostridioides difficile is a neglected pathogen in many African countries as it is generally not regarded as one of the major contributors toward the diarrheal disease burden in the continent. However, several studies have suggested that C. difficile infection (CDI) may be underreported in many African settings. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of CDI in hospitalized patients, evaluate antimicrobial exposure, and detect toxin and antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolated C. difficile strains.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 333 hospitalized

The increasing worldwide prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli constitutes a serious threat to global public health. Surgical site infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates in developing countries, fueled by the limited availability of effective antibiotics. We used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to evaluate antimicrobial resistance and the phylogenomic relationships of 19 ESBL-positive E. coli isolates collected from surgical site infections in patients across public hospitals in Benin in 2019. Isolates were identified by MALDI

Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Dublin is a host-adapted serotype in cattle, associated with enteritis and systemic disease. The primary clinical manifestation of Salmonella Dublin infection in cattle, especially calves, is respiratory disease. While rare in humans, it can cause severe illness, including bacteremia, with hospitalization and death. In the United States, S. Dublin has become one of the most multidrug-resistant serotypes. The objective of this study was to characterize S. Dublin isolates from sick cattle by analyzing phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resista

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of infection, and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a high-priority resistance threat. MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) differ in non-β-lactam resistance, yet longitudinal data from Aseer, Saudi Arabia are limited. We characterized methicillin-resistance and non-susceptibility trends to inform local stewardship.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective laboratory-based surveillance study of 4,194 S. aureus isolates from 3,122 patients (aged ≥12 years) at a tertiary-care center in Aseer, Saudi Arabia (January 2013-June

Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin (S. Dublin) is a cattle-adapted pathogen that can cause severe systemic infections in humans and animals. Understanding genomic relatedness across host species is essential for assessing the zoonotic potential and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In this study, 78 clinical S. Dublin strains, isolated in Florida between 2019 and 2024, were subjected to comparative genomic analysis. These included 19 animal-derived isolates (17 from dairy cattle and two from dogs) and 59 human-derived isolates. AMR gene profiling revealed widespread multidrug re

Salmonella Typhimurium and its monophasic variants are major contributors to foodborne illnesses globally, with zoonotic transmission posing significant public health risks. In southern China, persistent salmonellosis cases linked to poultry and pork highlight the need for advanced genomic tools to trace contamination sources and understand transmission dynamics. This study integrates whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and spatiotemporal data to investigate the molecular epidemiology of Salmonella in Jiangxi Province, a region with high incidence of foodborne salmonellosis. Analysis of 206 Salmonel

ABSTRACT: Virulence genes expressed in Salmonella are a primary contributing factor leading to the high morbidity and mortality of salmonellosis in humans. The pathogenicity of Salmonella is mainly determined by the specific virulence factors that it carries. These factors also confer greater virulence and play a role in infection of a host and transmission of disease, and most Salmonella enterica can cause cross-infections between humans and animals. In this study, 265 samples in total were collected from a farmer's market and two supermarkets in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, China, including 205

Manure from food animals exposed to antibiotics is often used as soil fertiliser, potentially releasing antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) with diverse antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) into the soil. To determine the impact of chicken litter application on the soil resistome, Enterococcus spp. isolated from chicken litter and soil samples collected before and after the soil amendment were characterised, using whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatics tools. Nineteen Enterococcus spp. isolates from the three sources were sequenced on Illumina Miseq platform to ascertain the isolates' resist

Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae is a close relative of the major human pathogen S. pneumoniae It is increasingly associated with lower-respiratory-tract infections (LRTI) and a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). S. pseudopneumoniae is difficult to identify using traditional typing methods due to similarities with S. pneumoniae and other members of the mitis group (SMG). Using whole-genome sequencing of LRTI isolates and a comparative genomic approach, we found that a large number of pneumococcal virulence and colonization genes are present in the core S. pseudopneumoniae genome.
