Thigh muscle volume was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging in 16 subjects with spinal muscular atrophy. Scans were successful for 14 of 16 subjects (1 type 1, 6 type 2, and 7 type 3) as young as 5.7 years. Muscle volume with normal and abnormal signal was measured using blinded, semiautomated analysis of reconstructed data. Results were compared with segmental lean mass estimated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and correlated with clinical and electrophysiological measures of disease severity. AIM: To examine fall-related hospitalised morbidity in New South Wales (NSW) and to describe the pattern of fall-related major trauma presentations at a Level 1 Trauma Centre in NSW for younger and older fallers.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study.
OBJECTIVES: To study the outcome of repair of cauda equina fibres with fibrin glue after lumbar fracture and/or dislocation.
METHODS: Seven acute cases and one chronic case of L2 or L3 fracture and/or dislocation complicated with complete cauda equina injury were selected. Sural nerve or ventral roots of injured cauda equina were chosen to repair the motor cauda equina fibres with fibrin glue after open reduction and internal fixation of the unstable vertebrae. The functional recovery after surgery was observed.

Pyomyositis is a primary acute bacterial infection usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Any skeletal muscle can be involved, but the thigh and trunk muscles are commonly affected. Mycobacterium-associated lobular panniculitis can mimic a rheumatoid nodule and has been seldom reported in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We describe a 69-year-old woman with RA who presented initially with fever and an indurated skin lesion on the right thigh. Spitzoid lesions are diagnostically problematic because of a deceptive morphology and indeterminate behavior. The most problematic are atypical Spitz tumors whereby distinction from melanoma may be difficult. The dartos muscle is a sympathetically innervated dermal muscle layer within the scrotum, distinct from the somatically innervated cremasteric muscle. We electrophysiologically demonstrate the presence of a dartos reflex (DR), which can be used to evaluate the thoracolumbar sympathetic and genitofemoral nerve pathways. We report 10 fatigue fractures of a modern, cemented, cobalt chromium alloy stem (Osteonics Omnifit) for total hip arthroplasty occurring between 1995 and 2004. The primary total hip arthroplasties had been performed between 1989 and 1996. Mutations in the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor (RYR1) gene are associated with a wide range of phenotypes, comprising central core disease and distinct subgroups of multi-minicore disease. Clinical results of revision total hip arthroplasty using fully porous-coated tapered titanium stems to treat severe proximal femoral bone loss were evaluated in a retrospective review of 39 patients (45 hips). We retrospectively reviewed 13 patellar tendon repairs done over 32 months at a tertiary care, military medical center. Early mobilization was initiated within 2 weeks postoperatively. Clinical and functional results were statistically examined with relation to age, timing of surgery, length of follow-up, quadriceps atrophy, extensor lag, patella position, and time to full duty.
