PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pulmonary cystic echinococcosis, a zoonosis caused by the larvae of the dog tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, is considered as a major public health problem in countries where dogs are used to care for large herds. Despite its frequency and widespread endemicity, the literature on pulmonary cystic echinococcosis is scarce and not systematic. BACKGROUND: In Marfan's syndrome, there is a paucity of data regarding intervention criteria for surgery of the dissected thoraco-abdominal aorta.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 22 Marfan's patients with distal aortic dissection managed between September 1999 and April 2006 was performed. Serial diameters and linear expansion rates were calculated from imaging studies and the outcome of intervention was analysed.

Adult cardiac surgery in patients with malrotation of the heart is rare. A 60 year-old lady, with known cardiac dextroversion, presented with dyspnoea and pre-syncopal attacks. Echocardiographical and radiological investigation confirmed the dextroversion, with clockwise rotation of the heart through its longitudinal axis. This resulted in the right ventricular outflow tract and pulmonary artery being wrapped anteriorly around the aorta, with posterior displacement of the right atrium. The presence of a heavily calcified, bicuspid aortic valve and dilated ascending aorta was also demonstrated.

Video-assisted cardioscopy (VAC) is a novel tool for providing clear visualization of small intracardiac structures and achieving complete repair in minimally invasive surgery. Between July 1999 and July 2000, 12 patients with atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect underwent surgical repair using a combined procedure with the transxiphoid approach and VAC in our institution. TT virus (TTV) has been proposed as the causative agent of non-A to E hepatitis. We studied the association between TTV viremia and biochemical evidence of hepatitis in blood donors and prospectively-followed patients. TTV was found in 7.5% of 402 donors and in 11.0% of 347 patients before transfusion. The rate of new TTV infections was 4.7% in 127 nontransfused, and 26.4% in 182 transfused patients (P <.0001). Palmar hyperhidrosis (PH) is a common disorder in Taiwan. It often causes social embarrassment and occupational handicaps. So far, there has been no satisfactory treatment for PH. In 1990, we first developed a minimally invasive technique: video endoscopic sympathectomy to treat PH. The procedure has subsequently proven to be a standard treatment for PH. The long-term results of 37 carotido-subclavian grafts was 100% till the end of the third year. This method is now our preferred method for correction of subclavian lesions. The operative mortality was 0%. The long-term results of the femoro-femoro bypasses was 79.7% from the third through the fifth year. 5 out of 7 axillo-femoral grafts remained patent. In our opinion the axillo-femoral bypass should only implanted in patients with an infected area in the aortoiliac segment but not routinally.
