A carbon fiber reinforced polymer cage for vertebral body replacement: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the surgical technique used for the replacement of damaged vertebral bodies of the thoracolumbar spine and the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) cages that are used to replace the pathological vertebral bodies. We also evaluated the biomechanical properties of carbon composite materials used in spinal surgery. TECHNIQUE: The surgical technique of CFRP implants may be divided into two distinct steps, i.e., assembling the components that will replace the pathological vertebral bodies and connecting the cage to an osteosynthetic system to immobilize the cage. [The remineralization of the vertebral metastases of breast carcinoma after radiotherapy].

BACKGROUND: The early detection of effects caused by radiotherapy on bone mineralisation has influence on clinical treatment. Usually the follow-up is done by conventional X-rays, presenting a loss of calcification of at least 30%. Quantitative CT-measurements are much more sensitive. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective study we evaluated the CT-scans of 14 patients with multiple vertebral metastases of mamma carcinoma. Our patients underwent SEQCT (one 10 mm slice in each affected vertebral body, 80 kV, 250 mAs) before and immediately after radiation therapy (total dose 30 Gy to 36 Gy) fo

Somatosensory potentials in dogs with naturally acquired thoracolumbar spinal cord disease.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded at the scalp and at various levels along the lumbar and caudal thoracic parts of the spine in response to tibial nerve stimulations. The SEP were observed in 24 diseased dogs, 2 with a vertebral fracture, 1 with a spinal cord tumor, 1 with a vertebral tumor, and 20 with disk herniation. Cord compression location was confirmed by myelography, laminectomy, or both. The clinical state had significant (P < 0.0001) influence on SEP characteristics. The scalp-recorded SEP latency changed only in association with the most severe lesions; spine-recor

A new instrumentation system for the reduction and posterior stabilization of unstable thoracolumbar fractures.

An innovative instrumentation and stabilization system was used for the treatment of unstable thoracolumbar fractures. The new osteosynthesis apparatus employs pedicle screw fixation, plate application, and a mechanical device for dynamic reduction in stable posterior fixation. Sixteen patients were treated with this operative technique that included a decompressive laminectomy, an arthropedunculectomy, and the removal of vertebral canal bone fragments. In most patients, three vertebral bodies, rather than four or five, were immobilized. All patients were studied pre- and postoperatively with

Recurrence of deformity after removal of Harrington's fixation of spine fracture. Seventy-six cases followed for 2 years.

The radiographic result was assessed in 76 patients with acute unstable fractures of the thoracic or lumbar spine admitted during the years 1977-1984, and who were managed by early reduction and stabilization using Harrington distraction rods and a three-segmental posterolateral fusion. The radiographs were analyzed for anterior and posterior heights plus sagittal and frontal widths of the fractured vertebral body and the angles of kyphosis and scoliosis of the spine. All the measurements were made at admission, immediately postoperatively, and at the latest follow-up at least 3 months after r

A retrospective study to reveal the effect of surgical correction of cervical kyphosis on thoraco-lumbo-pelvic sagittal alignment.

PURPOSE: Recent studies suggest that cervical lordosis is influenced by thoracic kyphosis and that T1 slope is a key factor determining cervical sagittal alignment. However, no previous study has investigated the influence of cervical kyphosis correction on the remaining spinopelvic balance. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of surgical correction of cervical kyphosis on thoraco-lumbo-pelvic alignment. METHODS: Fifty-five patients who underwent ≥2 level cervical fusions for cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy were included. All patients had regional or global cervical kyphosi

Treatment of spinal fractures in ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory spondyloarthropathy with the potential for progressive spinal stiffness that ultimately makes patients susceptible to spinal fractures with traumatic spinal cord injury from even low-energy trauma. Treatment of patients with AS and spinal fractures (AS+FX) is controversial because, although these patients need especially rigorous stabilization, surgery has been associated with an increased risk of complications and persistent neurological deficits. The purpose of this retrospective case series was to profile patients with AS+FX from a 19-ye

Association between platelet-to-albumin ratio and total spine bone mineral density in older adults with thoracolumbar fragility fractures: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Global aging elevates the incidence of thoracolumbar fragility fractures (TLFFs), which are linked to osteoporosis. Platelets (PLT) and albumin influence bone health; the platelet-to-albumin ratio (PAR) is applied in multi-disease research, but it has not yet been applied to patients with TLFF. This study thus explores PAR's association with bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional analysis based on a cohort of TLFF patients included 703 elderly TLFF patients from Huizhou First Hospital (2020-2025). BMD was measured, PAR calculated, and grouped; cova

Evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of precise microwave ablation combined with spinal tumor separation surgery for managing spinal metastases.

BACKGROUND: Spinal metastases represent a significant clinical challenge, often resulting in severe pain, neurological dysfunction, and substantial symptom burden. Surgical intervention remains a primary treatment modality for patients with spinal instability or neurological compromise; however, the optimal surgical strategy for minimizing operative morbidity while achieving effective decompression remains debated. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of precise microwave ablation (MWA) combined with spinal tumor separation surgery compared with tumor separation surgery alone in

Vertebral body expansion and percutaneous short-segment posterior fixation of thoracic and lumbar fractures requiring corpectomy: a retrospective single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic and lumbar fractures with a Load Sharing Classification (LSC) score ≥ 7 are considered at high risk of failure after isolated short posterior fixation, which historically led to systematic anterior reconstruction by corpectomy with substantial morbidity. Minimally invasive vertebral body expansion combined with short posterior fixation may restore anterior column support while limiting surgical aggressiveness. However, data remain limited for fractures with high LSC scores. This study addressed the following questions: (1) Does the combined strategy reduce the failure rate

Sagittal vertical axis, spinosacral angle, T1 pelvic angle, and spinopelvic angle: which parameters can predict improvement in quality of life after surgical correction of ankylosing spondylitis?

INTRODUCTION: Spinal deformities in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) can significantly impact their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, studies evaluating the relationship between specific spinal alignment parameters and HRQoL in these patients remain limited. AIM: This study aimed to examine the correlations between SVA, SSA, TPA, and SPA and HRQoL in surgically treated kyphosis patients with ankylosing spondylitis. It also aims to determine which measures are better at predicting HRQoL. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive AS patients with thor

A Comparative Study of Spinous Process Splitting Laminectomy and Laminoplasty for Thoracolumbar Intradural Spinal Tumor Surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In intradural spinal tumor surgery, laminoplasty (LP) aims to better preserve posterior spinal structures compared with laminectomy, potentially reducing complications such as deformity and cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Spinous process splitting laminectomy (SPSL), a modified form of laminectomy, also maintains the integrity of posterior spinal elements. However, there is concern regarding postoperative fluid collection at the laminectomy site. This study aimed to compare the postoperative outcomes between the two techniques. METHODS: This retrospective study include
