Isolated distal deep venous thrombosis (iDDVT) is an infra-popliteal DVT without pulmonary embolism (PE). It is a common condition, but its management remains debated. We conducted a survey distributed by email to the members of the French Society of Vascular Medicine, Thrombosis Canada, the Swiss Society of Angiology and INVENT-VTE research networks; Our objectives were to determine how healthcare professionals specialized in thrombosis manage iDDVT and to obtain experts input on the design of a future clinical trial. Participants were asked how they diagnosed and managed iDDVT and what shoul

Factor VIII (FVIII), a critical cofactor protein traditionally acknowledged for its deficiency in haemophilia A (HA), has been attracting interest for its substantial role in vascular disease. Recent data highlights its essential role beyond haemostasis, in the development of venous thrombosis (VT) and endothelial dysfunction influenced by genetic and acquired factors. This review summarizes the biology, synthesis, and activation of FVIII, emphasizing its role in thrombin generation and endothelial dysfunction. FVIII is implicated in inflammatory and thrombotic disorders, such as COVID-19, sep

Septic cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST) is a rare but life-threatening complication of facial infections, typically arising from the midface 'danger triangle'. Rarely, lateral facial infections may also lead to CST through spread via deep venous pathways. We report a previously healthy adolescent boy who developed fever, bilateral orbital swelling, and painful ophthalmoplegia shortly after the resolution of a furuncle over the left temporal part of the forehead. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed CST. He was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone, vancomycin, and low molecular weight heparin,

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), serves as a major complication in critically ill patients receiving extracorporeal life support (ECLS). The primary aim of the study was to systematically determine the prevalence of cannula-associated DVT following ECLS in a mixed adult ICU population. Methods: In this prospective diagnostic study, performed at two ICUs at a tertiary university hospital, we included 101 patients undergoing ECLS between 2016 and 2021. DVT was assessed by vascular ultrasound within 72 h after decannula

BACKGROUND: Endovascular cooling catheters are used to induce and maintain therapeutic hypothermia. While generally considered safe, complications have been reported, notably catheter-related inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis. We sought to determine the frequency and clinical impact of this complication in patients managed with therapeutic hypothermia following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).
METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Effect of Moderate vs Mild Therapeutic Hypothermia on Mortality and Neurologic Outcomes in Comatose Survivors of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical trials demonstrated a reduction in biomarkers of thrombosis and inflammation in patients with very high cardiovascular risk treated with the anti-IL-6 (interleukin 6) monoclonal antibody ziltivekimab. However, if and how direct IL-6 inhibition exerts antithrombotic effects remains unknown. This translational project aimed to investigate the effect of direct IL-6 inhibition on experimental arterial thrombus formation and its underlying cellular mechanisms.
METHODS: Three-month-old C57BL/6J male and female mice received very low dose lipopolysaccharide for 4 weeks; i

The analysis of risk stratification of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among 120 post-operative patients in critical care units using the Modified Caprini Risk Assessment Tool is of interest. Most participants (over 80%) in both experimental and control groups were categorized as high risk for DVT. Statistical analysis revealed significant associations between higher Caprini scores and clinical variables such as age, BMI, mobility limitation, emergency surgery, central venous catheter presence, swollen leg, and longer surgical duration (p < 0.05). Demographic variables like gender, income, and diet

We present the case of a 67-year-old man who developed superior mesenteric vein thrombosis (SMVT) as the initial manifestation of IgD lambda and lambda light chain multiple myeloma (LCMM). He initially presented with abdominal pain and was found to have SMVT without identifiable thrombophilic risk factors. Persistent macrocytosis, unexplained renal dysfunction, and mild anemia prompted further evaluation, revealing markedly elevated serum free lambda light chains, suppressed immunoglobulins, and a bone marrow biopsy confirming LCMM. This case highlights the importance of considering plasma cel

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also known as COVID-19 disease has the ability to generate sequelae that extend for weeks or months, giving rise to long-term COVID-19 disease. This condition reduces patients' quality of life and predisposes them to several alterations, including failures in the blood coagulation system. Our laboratory has previously demonstrated abnormalities in endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) of patients recovered from COVID-19.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the functional state of ECFCs in patients who experienced venous thromboemb

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare but life-threatening condition, particularly among pregnant and postpartum women. However, estimates of its incidence, recurrence, and associated adverse outcomes remain inconsistent. Moreover, the role of antithrombotic prophylaxis in mitigating these risks has not been fully established.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to synthesize global evidence on the incidence of CVT during pregnancy and postpartum, evaluate recurrence rates of CVT and noncerebral venous thromboembolism (VTE), assess adverse pregnancy outcomes, and explore the efficacy

Upper limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has become a more common condition due to the growing use of cardiac device implantation. We report two cases of left upper limb DVT occurring five days and three months, respectively, after permanent pacemaker implantation. Both patients presented with progressive swelling of the left upper limb associated with dilated superficial veins across the left chest and upper arm. Ultrasound (US) compression venography confirmed occlusive thrombi in the left axillary and subclavian veins. They received direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) therapy after the diagnosis.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) accounts for a small proportion of strokes. Still, it carries meaningful clinical impact, classically linked to systemic prothrombotic conditions, hormonal influences, and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, with advances in neuroimaging, it's now evident that trauma-related CVST (tCVST) can also complicate mild to moderate head injuries even in the absence of skull fractures. We report the case of a 31-year-old South Asian male who developed tCVST following a motorbike accident. He sustained a moderate TBI with a small occipital fracture. On p

Non-cirrhotic portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is rare, and early initiation of anticoagulation therapy is crucial for recanalization and preventing complications. A man in his 50s presented to the emergency department with acute back pain. His vital signs and laboratory results were normal, showing no signs of infection. An initial computed tomography (CT) scan with intravenous contrast in the arterial phase showed no abnormalities. However, on the third day, a CT scan in the late phase confirmed PVT in the left branch, along with gallbladder infarction. This case highlights the limitations of ar

OBJECTIVES: Mitochondria are a source of autoantigens and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Nucleoids carrying TFAM (transcription factor A, mitochondrial) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are important DAMPs in SLE. While mtDNA has been associated with anti-double-stranded (ds)DNA antibodies and type I interferon (IFN-I), the immunogenic role of TFAM in SLE pathogenesis is unknown. Here, we characterised the clinical and transcriptional phenotypes linked to anti-TFAM antibodies in SLE.
METHODS: Anti-TFAM antibodies were discovered in an explorat

Large uterine fibroids (UFs) are clonal neoplasms of the uterus that form during the mid and late-aged women. Such women generally consume oral contraceptive pills, tranexamic acid, or NSAIDS to manage heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and associated complications while waiting for a conclusive procedure or avoiding hysterectomy. The procoagulant effect of these medicinal agents can result in venous stasis of the lower limbs, leading to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a challenging complication with HMB. We examine the complicated state of heavy bleeding with thrombosis and explore better management
