The effects of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on some nutritional variables were prospectively investigated in 12 severely cachectic patients with advanced cancer. The following variables were determined before and at 5-day intervals during the 20-day administration of TPN: anthropometric indices (body weight, arm circumference, triceps skinfold, arm muscle circumference, arm muscle area, arm fat area, total body muscle mass); biochemical indices (total protein, albumin, cholinesterase, total iron binding capacity, thyroxin-binding prealbumin, retinol binding protein, urinary 3-methylhistidi

The value of new ultrasensitive and rapid immunoradiometric assay of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) for the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism was assessed in 130 patients with suspected hyperthyroidism and in 330 controls. The diagnosis was established by the clinical evaluation, thyroid scintigraphy and serum concentrations of thyroid hormones. Using the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve methodology which allows the optimization of sensitivity and specificity, the physician can choose the "Cut-off" value between hyperthyroidism and euthyroidism. Two points of the curve seem to be in

Forty-six patients treated with amiodarone hydrochloride for a mean period of 41 +/- 3.5 months, with an average daily dose of 240 +/- 57 mg/day, have been studied. Thyroid function was assessed clinically and by laboratory tests, which included free-triiodothyronine (free-T3), free-thyroxine (free-T4) and thyrotropin. Antimicrosomal and antithyroglobulin antibodies were also looked for. Three patients (6.5%) were found to be hyperthyroid and two (4.3%) hypothyroid. Of the 41 clinically euthyroid patients, 19 (46.3%) showed one or more abnormalities in the thyroid function tests. In this group

In this review, the major types of immune mediated thyroiditis are described and the etiology explained in the light of current theories of autoimmunity. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common autoimmune disease. The onset is gradual with patients presenting with symptoms of hypothyroidism, nonspecific symptoms of the autoimmune process itself, or symptoms relating to a goitre. The disease is usually relentless and, except in young patients, permanent replacement with thyroxine is eventually required. Silent thyroiditis is another autoimmune disease of more acute onset. The initial, thyrotoxic, p

Among 239 hyperthyroid patients from the Bernese endemic goiter area referred to specialist, 66% were found to have Graves' disease (MB), 12% hyperthyroid autonomous adenoma ( AAH ) and 22% multinodular toxic goiter (HK). 189 (79%) of these 239 patients have been followed up 5.4 +/- 3.8 years after the last treatment. At the time of follow-up, 146 patients (77%) were euthyroid without additional treatment. 97 of these (51%) became euthyroid after a single, initial treatment (41% of the MB, 83% of the AAH and 67% of the HK). 68 patients (36%) developed recurrences, in some cases several (48% of

Hormones of the thyroid gland (thyroxine, tri-iodothyronine) control the metabolism of cells and tissue of the body, while parathormone and calcitonine are balancing the intra- and extracellular levels of calcium and phosphorus by governing some metabolic functions of bones, kidney and small intestine. Growth, maturation and metabolic homeostasis of the organism depend, among other intrinsic factors, on a normal production and secretory rate of both thyroidal and parathyroidal hormones. Clinical conditions of hyperthyroidism induce 1. increased metabolic turnover of the body with transcutaneou

As a part of a continuing study on the effects of thyroid hormones on heart muscle, triiodothyroacetic acid (triac), either alone or concurrently with propranolol, has been administered to rats during pregnancy. Control groups received either buffer or propranolol. Offspring, which were given no further treatment, were killed at intervals after birth and their hearts examined histologically, histochemically, and electron microscopically. At 2, 6, and 14 days, offspring of triac-treated rats showed cardiac hypertrophy and, at ultrastructural level, marked disarray of the myofibrils was present.

Maturation of the fetal lung is accelerated by in utero treatment with corticosteroids and thyroid hormones. Other agents such as catecholamines, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, oestradiol, heroin and cyclic AMP also influence pulmonary phospholipid metabolism. Glucocorticoids cause precocious development of both lung morphology and the surfactant system in type II cells, resulting in more stable lungs with increased air space. The properties of glucocorticoid action are consistent with enzyme induction mediated by interaction of steroid with cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors. Receptors are

Lactation failure is common in urban areas of industrially developing countries, but little is known about its epidemiology and causality. The study reported here was undertaken to investigate the serum levels of some hormones other than prolactin that have been shown in animal studies to play a role in lactation, and to examine their relationship to adequacy of lactation and to nutritional and socioeconomic status in urban Iranian women. Serum levels of placental lactogen, growth hormone, cortisol, and thyroid hormones were measured under standard conditions in two groups of pregnant women fr

Thyroid function was assessed in 110 patients who were in remission for a period of 7-6 +/- 0-6 years (mean +/- S.E.) (range 0-25--25 years) after the withdrawal of antithyroid drug therapy for thyrotoxicosis. On the basis of clinical examination and on the results of thyroid-function tests, the following group of patients were identified: (I) euthyroid with normal plasma-total thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations, but an absent or subnormal response of plasma-thyrotrophin (T.S.H.) to thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (T.R.H.) (16%); (II) euthyroid with normal concentrations of

The salient information regarding the effects of uremia and dialysis on each of the metabolic fuels and hormones presented in the preceding sections is summarized in three tables. Tables 1 and 2 provide data on plasma levels, metabolism, dialysance, and literature references for each substance. Table 3 organizes the data according to the general mechanisms by which uremia and chronic dialysis may affect biological substances. Together these tables provide a reasonably complete summary of the information presently available. The pathophysiology of the uremic syndrome is still incompletely under

Thyrotoxicosis is a clinical syndrome due to excessive amounts of thyroid hormone in the circulation and tissues. Graves' disease, goitre and exophthalmos, is the commonest variety, but in some parts of the world thyrotoxicosis supervenes on the background of a long standing nodular goitre. Other varieties such as ectopic TSH syndromes are very rare. The diagnostic sequence in practice starts with clinical suspicion and a decision can often be made on the symptoms and signs alone. It is, however, always advisable to confirm the presence or absence of thyrotoxicosis. There has been re-orientati

INTRODUCTION: Psychological symptoms and poor sleep quality (PSQ) frequently co-occur and impose a substantial public health burden. This study aimed to investigate the association between psychological symptoms and PSQ, examine whether thyroid hormones modify this association, and characterize the mixed psychological -sleep -thyroid symptom network among adults undergoing routine health examinations.
METHODS: This study enrolled 3,694 adults who underwent routine health screening at the Health Management Center of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital between April 2022 and December 2025. Par

Thyroid hormones are essential for fetal and early childhood development. Manganese (Mn) and selenium (Se) are involved in thyroid hormone homeostasis; however, the effects of prenatal Mn and Se exposure on thyroid function in offspring remain unclear. We analyzed 1,773 mother-child pairs from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, measuring Mn and Se in maternal whole blood during the second or third trimester and in cord blood at delivery. Neonatal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was measured on postnatal days 4-6, whereas plasma TSH and free thyroxine (FT4) were measured at ages 2 an

PURPOSE: Macroalgae, also called seaweed, may serve as a dietary iodine source, although some species contain high iodine levels and may increase the risk of excessive intake. This non-randomized pre-post clinical trial aimed to assess iodine status, estimated iodine intake and thyroid function in habitual seaweed consumers (pre-intervention), and after a six-week cessation period of seaweed consumption (post-intervention). METHODS: Habitual seaweed consumers (n = 49) were recruited by convenience sampling from the two largest cities in Norway. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), urinary creat

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism requires treatment with levothyroxine to achieve a euthyroid state. Dosage based solely on body weight has limitations, particularly in patients with overweight or obesity.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the levothyroxine dose required to achieve a euthyroid state, adjusted for different body weight measures, varies according to sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and type of hypothyroidism.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in euthyroid adults with hypothyroidism receiving levothyroxine therapy between August 2024 and August 2025

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine (LTX) in many cases has no beneficial effects on patients with subclinical hypothyroidism. Still, prescriptions are increasing worldwide. If there is no clear indication for treatment, patients treated with LTX should be offered a deprescribing trial according to current guidelines. However, there is currently no protocol for deprescribing LTX in primary care.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore patients' enablers and barriers towards deprescribing levothyroxine in primary care to inform the further participatory

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C supplementation may enhance the absorption of levothyroxine in patients with hypothyroidism. This proof-of-concept pilot study aimed to assess the frequency of vitamin C insufficiency and evaluate the feasibility and potential therapeutic signal of vitamin C supplementation in patients requiring high-dose levothyroxine.
METHODS: This two-phase study initially assessed vitamin C levels in 26 hypothyroid patients and 91 healthy controls. In phase two, a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Twelve patients were randomized, and 11 completed the s

BACKGROUND: Subclinical hypothyroidism has been linked to adverse renal outcomes, but it is unknown whether treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism reduces the risk of these adverse outcomes. We sought to assess whether treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism with levothyroxine is associated with a decreased risk of developing adverse renal outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using a prevalent new-user design. Using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink in the United Kingdom, we assembled a study cohort of individuals aged 18 years and older with newly diagnosed

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction is one of the most common endocrine disorders. Thyroid function tests, including TSH, Free T4, and Free T3, are essential for diagnosis and patient management. Current guidelines recommend TSH as the first-line test, with additional testing for Free T4 and Free T3 only when TSH is abnormal or in specific clinical scenarios. Despite guideline recommendations, inappropriate ordering of free hormone tests is prevalent, leading to increased healthcare costs, diagnostic inefficiencies, and potential patient burden. In this study, we aimed to assess thyroid function t
