Comparison of pilot tone-triggered and electrocardiogram-triggered cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: a prospective clinical feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiogram (ECG)-triggered cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) can be challenging in patients with ECG unreliability. Pilot tone (PT)-triggered CMR may offer a reliable alternative. PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of PT-triggered CMR and compare its performance with ECG-triggered imaging across various sequences in patients with common cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: This prospective study included 50 participants (26 males, 24 females; mean age 46.0±19.0y), including 15 with normal CMR findings and 35 with various cardiovascular diseases. All participants under

Modified V-Y Turndown Flap Augmentation for Quadriceps Tendon Rupture Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps tendon rupture following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an infrequent but potentially devastating adverse event. Although uncommon, the long-term sequelae of this injury can result in permanent inability to walk. Despite the severity of this injury, there is no single accepted treatment, with various surgical methods producing mixed results. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of a modified V-Y turndown flap as a viable alternative method of treatment for this injury. METHODS: Twenty-four quadriceps tendon ruptures in 23 patients (10 men an

Unilateral Laryngoscopic Findings Associated With Response to Gabapentin in Patients With Chronic Cough.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic cough is a debilitating, often multifactorial problem. Vagal neuropathy has been proposed as a cause for a fraction of these cases. There are certain features that support the clinical diagnosis of vagal neuropathy. It is hypothesized that patients with neurogenic cough who have vocal fold motion asymmetry (VFMA) on laryngoscopy will be more likely to respond to gabapentin. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the history, physical and videostroboscopic examinations, and clinical response to gabapentin. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a retrospective cohor

The solvation of nitroxide radicals in ionic liquids studied by high-field EPR spectroscopy.

Ionic liquids (ILs) feature a variety of properties that make them a unique class of solvents. To gain a better understanding of how ILs solvate compounds of different chemical structure, we used pulsed high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy at W-band (approximately 94 GHz) and continuous wave EPR at X-band (approximately 9.4 GHz) on three TEMPO-based spin probes with different substitutions at the 4-position: 4-R-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl, with R = N(CH(3))(3)(+), Cat-1, R = COO(-), TEMPO-4-carboxylate, and R = OH, TEMPOL. The spin probes are dissolved in imi

Flexible external fixation for craniodorsal coxofemoral luxations in dogs.

An external fixator consisting of two Ellis pins connected by a flexible band was developed and evaluated as a treatment for craniodorsal coxofemoral luxations in dogs. The technique for closed application of the fixator without injury to the coxofemoral joint or sciatic nerve was developed in six dog cadavers. The coxofemoral joints were then surgically destabilized and the limbs were manipulated through a full range of motion to assess the efficacy of the fixator in maintaining joint reduction. The fixator maintained joint reduction and stability after a surgically created craniodorsal luxat

Stimulus Incongruency Effects on Visual Short-Term Memory Binding in Young and Older Adults with and Without Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Literature suggests that both the Stroop task and visual short-term memory (VSTM) binding tasks can differentiate individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) from cognitively normal older adults. These cognitive processes have rarely been examined together. This study investigated how Stroop-like color-word incongruency and directional incongruency between arrow orientation and motion affect memory accuracy and reaction time (RT) measures during a VSTM binding task in cognitively normal adults and individuals screening positive for MCI. METHODS: A total of 115 adults particip

Clinical Outcomes of Functional Alignment Total Knee Arthroplasty using Intraoperative Sensors: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Even with the present developments of total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a significant percentage of patients are still not satisfied after surgery, mostly because of the presence of pain and instability associated with poor balance of soft tissues. The philosophy of functional alignment has been proposed as a patient-specific philosophy of alignment with the intention to restore native knee kinematics, and intraoperative sensor technology has offered objective, real-time measurement of loads in the mediolateral compartments. There is little evidence on the integrated clinical outcom

Assessment of inter-individual variability in hamstring muscle recovery after a sport-specific sprint training in women and men.

Background: Hamstring muscles are most affected by multiple sprint-based sports as a result of muscle strain during sprinting, leading to reduced performance and increased risk of injury. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess inter-individual variability in hamstrings recovery after a sport-specific repeated-sprint training (RST), through sprint-specific markers of muscle recovery and associated muscle damage biomarkers in women and men. Methods: Healthy females (n = 14) and males (n = 15) underwent 10 repeated 40-m sprints with a 3-min rest pause between each repetition. Force-gen

Comparison of different prediction models for estimation of walking and running energy expenditure based on a wristwear three-axis accelerometer.

Objective: Objectively and efficiently measuring physical activity is a common issue facing the fields of medicine, public health, education, and sports worldwide. In response to the problem of low accuracy in predicting energy consumption during human motion using accelerometers, a prediction model for asynchronous energy consumption in the human body is established through various algorithms, and the accuracy of the model is evaluated. The optimal energy consumption prediction model is selected to provide theoretical reference for selecting reasonable algorithms to predict energy consumption

Acute effects of an isometric neck warm-up programme on neck performance characteristics and ultrasound-based morphology.

OBJECTIVE: Athletic performance can be enhanced immediately after an isometric warm-up, a phenomenon termed post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE). While isometric warm-ups can improve lower extremity sprint and jump performance, neck-specific isometric warm-ups need development and validation for mild traumatic brain disorders and neck pain. This study examined acute effects of isometric warm-ups on neck performance and morphology. METHODS: Arm 1: Twenty-six adults (13 M:13F) completed neck performance testing before and after a 10-minute neck isometric warm-up or stationary bike (sh

Post-marathon Decline in Right Ventricular Radial Motion Component Among Amateur Sportsmen.

Moderate physical activity has a positive impact on health, although extreme forms of sport such as marathon running may trigger exercise-induced cardiac fatigue. The explicit distinction between the right ventricular (RV) physiological response to training and maladaptive remodeling has not yet been determined. In this study, we aimed to analyze the impact of running a marathon on RV mechanics in amateur athletes using three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography (ECHO) and the ReVISION method (RV separate wall motion quantification). A group of 34 men with a mean age of 40 ± 8 years who successfu

The use of bone turnover markers for monitoring the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal females undergoing total knee arthroplasty: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) and osteoarthritis (OA) commonly coexist in postmenopausal females. The decrease in bone density and increase in bone resorption in postmenopausal females with OP may consequently affect the surgical outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, clinicians often ignore monitoring the treatment of OP in the perioperative management of TKA. Bone turnover marker (BTM) can timely and accurately reflect bone metabolism to monitor the treatment of OP. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of BTM monitoring to guide the treatment of OP in postmenop

Review on the progress in nuclear fission-experimental methods and theoretical descriptions.

An overview is given on some of the main advances in the experimental methods, experimental results, theoretical models and ideas of the last few years in the field of nuclear fission. New approaches have considerably extended the availability of fissioning systems for the experimental study of nuclear fission, and have provided a full identification of all fission products in A and Z for the first time. In particular, the transition from symmetric to asymmetric fission around 226Th, some unexpected structures in the mass distributions in the fission of systems around Z  =  80-84, and an exten

Reliability of Three-Dimensional Angular Kinematics and Kinetics of Swimming Derived from Digitized Video.

The purpose of this study was to explore the reliability of estimating three-dimensional (3D) angular kinematics and kinetics of a swimmer derived from digitized video. Two high-level front crawl swimmers and one high level backstroke swimmer were recorded by four underwater and two above water video cameras. One of the front crawl swimmers was digitized at 50 fields per second with a window for smoothing by a 4(th) order Butterworth digital filter extending 10 fields beyond the start and finish of the stroke cycle (FC1), while the other front crawl (FC2) and backstroke (BS) swimmer were digit

Effects of tail docking on behavior of confined feedlot cattle.

Tail tip injuries occur in some feedlot cattle housed in slatted-floor facilities typically found in the midwestern United States. The practice of tail docking cattle on entry into these feedlot facilities was initiated to prevent tail injuries. Tail docking is a welfare concern from the standpoint that an important method of fly avoidance is removed and the tail docking procedure is painful and often excludes local anesthesia or extended analgesia. The primary objective of this study was to describe the behavioral responses of feedlot cattle following tail docking. Thirty-six heifers were ran

Risk factors for seroma formation after axillary lymph node dissection with special focus on the impact of early shoulder exercise.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder and arm dysfunction such as reduced range of motion (ROM) and seroma formation, are common complications following axillary lymph node dissection (ALND). There are conflicting results on the effect of early postoperative exercise on the risk of seroma. This study aims to present incidence of symptomatic seroma formation in a large, population-based cohort, and assesses whether early shoulder mobilization, and other common patient and treatment-related factors are predictors of seroma. METHODS: This observational cohort study at the Surgical clinic at Lund University Hospi
