Early tongue carcinomas (clinical stage I and II): echo-guided three-dimensional diode laser mini-invasive surgery with evaluation of histological prognostic parameters. A study of 85 cases with prolonged follow-up.

The management of patients with early stage (cT1-T2) tongue squamous cell carcinoma without clinicoradiologic evidence of neck node metastasis (cN0) has been widely debated over the last 3 decades and still remains controversial. Nevertheless, the identification of patients with low-stage tumours at high-risk for occult cervical metastases is imperative before planning treatments of primary tumours, as well as that of prognostic markers which may possibly select those patients who may benefit of additional workup after surgery in view of the high metastatic potential of the primary tumour. Change in reimbursement and costs in German oncological head and neck surgery over the last decade: ablative tongue cancer surgery and reconstruction with split-thickness skin graft vs. microvascular radial forearm flap.

OBJECTIVES: Defects after ablative tongue cancer surgery can be reconstructed by split-thickness skin grafts or free microvascular flaps. The different surgical options may influence costs, reimbursement, and therefore possible profits. Our goal was to analyze the development of these parameters for different procedures in head and neck reconstruction in Germany over the last decade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After tumor resection and neck dissection of tongue cancer, three different scenarios were chosen to calculate costs, reimbursement, length of stay (LoS), and profits. Two options considere

Hypoglossal nerve palsy missed and misinterpreted: the hidden skull base.

OBJECTIVE: Dysarthria and tongue swelling may be seen with hypoglossal nerve palsy, and on cross-sectional imaging studies, tongue denervation can be misinterpreted as a primary base-of-tongue mass. Understanding radiological patterns of tongue denervation is important to prevent misinterpretation. Close evaluation of the skull base is critical as hypoglossal palsies resulting from pathology here are often overlooked. METHODS: Neck and brain magnetic resonance imaging studies obtained in 7 adult patients referred to our institution with clinically and/or radiologically suspected tongue base m

Morphological diversity in the honeyeater hyolingual apparatus and its relationship with nectarivory.

Honeyeaters (Aves, Meliphagidae) are a speciose clade of nectarivorous birds, and there is immense diversity in the degree to which different species within the family rely on nectar. Honeyeater tongues are commonly described as similar to a paintbrush, with this morphology being interpreted as an adaptation for increasing nectar extraction efficiency. However, there has been limited work documenting the degree of interspecific diversity in tongue morphology across the family or the extent to which such diversity correlates with dependance on nectar. This information is also lacking for the hy

Manometric and endoscopic localization of airway obstruction after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

The most widely reported surgical procedure for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. The success rate for this procedure is variable, and the reason for failure is incompletely understood. Failure in some patients is postulated to result from tongue-base obstruction. To investigate this, we identified the level of collapse and obstruction in 11 cases of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty failure, using upper airway manometry and videoendoscopy, while patients slept. Airway manometry measured the initial level of complete obstruction. Videoendoscopy identified significant resti

Diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the assessment of tumor invasion depth in oral/oropharyngeal cancer.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of MRI for measuring invasion depth in oral/oropharyngeal carcinoma. We retrospectively reviewed pathologic specimens and MRI findings of 114 patients who were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. Invasion depths were evaluated in pathologic specimens and by MRI. The mean histologic and MRI invasion depths were 13.57 ± 8.476 and 15.24 ± 10.700 mm, respectively. The overall Pearson's correlation coefficient for histologic and MRI (T1W-MRI) invasion depths was 0.825, which was statistically

Can Measurement of Ultrasonic Echo Intensity Predict Physical Frailty in Older Adults?

Echo intensity (EI) of the tongue in ultrasonography is an easy and quantitative assessment of tongue function. Elucidating the relationship between EI and frailty, is expected to aid in the early detection of frailty and oral hypofunction in older adults. We assessed tongue function and frailty in older outpatients visiting a hospital. The subjects were 101 individuals aged 65 or older (35 men and 66 women, mean age 76.4 ± 7.0 years). Tongue pressure and EI were measured as assessments of tongue function and grip strength, and Kihon Checklist (KCL) scores were measured as assessments of frail

Comprehensive profiling of volatile aroma compounds and non-volatile metabolites in five salted chili peppers using multi-omics technologies: E-nose, E-tongue, GC-IMS, GC × GC-TOF-MS, and UHPLC-MS/MS.

This study aimed to decipher the flavor profiles of salted chili peppers (SCP) from five geographical origins and elucidate the molecular basis of their characteristic savory-aromatic fusion. Utilizing a multi-omics approach on samples of the same variety processed identically, we identified 75 characteristic odor-active compounds. SCP from Guizhou (SCP3) exhibited the most intense aroma, rich in esters and phenols. Umami attributes were primarily driven by amino acids, peptides, and lipids, with Shandong SCP4 showing the highest umami potential. Critically, correlation analysis revealed signi

Discrimination of poisonous and medicinal plants with similar appearance (Asarum heterotropoides vs. Cynanchum paniculatum) via a fusion method of E-nose, E-tongue, LC-HR-Q-TOF-MS/MS, and electrochemical fingerprint spectra.

INTRODUCTION: The similarity in appearance of poisonous and medicinal plants, such as Asarum heterotropoides (AH) and Cynanchum paniculatum (CP), poses safety risks due to frequent confusion. Since AH contains toxic ingredients, the traditional methods of olfactory and gustatory identification cannot be used to distinguish AH from CP. METHODS: To differentiate them systematically, we proposed a novel strategy based on dual electronic sensors (DES) and dual fingerprint spectra (DFS). The DES included two intelligent sensors, namely the E-nose and E-tongue, which differentiated AH and CP based

Boym's "De Indiciis Morborum ex Linguae Coloribus et Affectionibus": The Earliest Chinese Tongue Diagnosis Manual Published in Europe, Identification of Original Chinese Text, Peculiarities of Printed Edition and Its Impact on European Medicine.

Upon his untimely death, Michal Boym (1612-1659) left behind an enormous written legacy; covering a diverse range of interests in fields such as Chinese linguistics, cartography, botany, zoology, philosophy and medicine. This article attempts to examine Boym's De indiciis morborum ex linguae coloribus & affectionibus (The signs of disease on the tongue, colors and affections), a translation of a previously unidentified Chinese text. The text specifically deals with the subject of tongue diagnosis, in relation to contagious diseases that were still raging in the 17th century China. Arriving to

Lingual Frenuloplasty for Ankyloglossia in Children: A Case Series.

Tongue is an important oral structure that affects speech, position of teeth, periodontal tissue, nutrition, swallowing, nursing, and certain social activities. Tongue-tie or ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue, characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum resulting in limited tongue movement. Diagnosis must include functional assessment of tongue mobility, in addition to the physical appearance of the frenulum. Tongue mobility and appearance associated with the insertion, as well as the attachment and the shortness of the lingual frenulum should be evaluated

[Evaluation of speech therapy and rehabilitation exercises in mouth-breathers].

Mouth breathing induces a low rest posturing of the tongue and tongue thrusting in many cases. This disturbs the development of the oral functions. The first stage of the reeducation is nose breathing's rehabilitation in order to "liberate" the tongue. Nasal breathing cannot be taught exteriorly . It's a result of the physical well-being. It's important to observe the mouth breathers and understand their needs. The second stage of the reeducation concerns the tongue moving tonicity and suppleness. Every exercise relies on the proprioceptive control that makes the child aware of each motion of

Macroglossia: etiologic considerations and management techniques.

Tongue enlargement of varying degrees occurs in many people and often requires no therapy. However, marked tongue enlargement, when present, requires direct intervention. In this case, the otolaryngologist is presented with a dilemma, for the etiology of the problem is often obscure. In many cases, the tongue enlargement is secondary to systemic disease, and medical management is indicated. When tongue reduction is indicated, there are many modalities available. Of these, only excision offers an acceptable functional result with minimal morbidity. Even large protuberant tongues can be reduced
