Pharmacological advances in HIV treatment: from ART to long-acting injectable therapies.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a global public health challenge, affecting millions worldwide despite significant advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART). While ART has transformed HIV into a manageable chronic condition, long-term adherence, drug resistance, and access disparities continue to hinder treatment success. Recent research has focused on developing alternative therapeutic strategies, particularly long-acting injectable (LAI) therapies and immunotherapeutic approaches to improve adherence and potentially achieve viral remission. This review explores the evolution of

Biosensor-embedded wearables for dry eye monitoring and management.

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye disease (DED) affects over 300 million people worldwide and continues to pose diagnostic challenges due to fluctuating symptoms and reliance on static, clinic-based tests. Conventional methods such as Schirmer's test and tear osmolarity provide only episodic insights, failing to capture the dynamic behavior of the tear film. Recently, biosensor-embedded wearable devices, including smart contact lenses, eyelid-mounted patches, and sensor-equipped spectacles, have emerged, enabling real-time and continuous tracking of tear metrics and blink patterns. These technologies prom

A universal home-visit programme to tailor support to first-time parents: a qualitative case study on parents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The first year of a child's life is essential for promoting a healthy life, and the transition to becoming a parent can be a challenge; parents need to develop confidence in their own capacity to care for their child. The national Child Health Services programme in Sweden offers parental support, both on a universal level and in accordance with the individual family's needs. This study explores parents' experiences of an extended home-visit programme offered through a Family Centre to all first-time parents in a municipality. METHODS: This case study is based on a qualitative refl

Non-Communicable Diseases, Longevity, and Health Span: A Hong Kong Perspective.

The health of different countries evolves in parallel with their economic development. Communicable diseases play a more prominent role in low-income countries compared with high-income countries, while non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become dominant in developing and developed economies. This transition has been accompanied by public health efforts to prevent NCDs, resulting in improvements in total life expectancy at birth (TLE). It is recognized that health determinants are not confined to healthcare systems, but that social determinants play a key role in health inequalities. The rap

A critical evaluation of psilocybin-assisted therapy protocol components from clinical trial patients, facilitators, and caregivers.

Psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) is an experimental treatment with transformative promise. Developing standards for PAT psychotherapy protocols is a priority, but psychotherapeutic protocol components of PAT have been subjected to little rigorous research. This study was designed to assess protocol components in a trial of PAT. The Enhanced Critical Incident Technique (E-CIT) was used to identify critical incidents in the treatment, wish list items comprising components or modifications that would have improved the treatment experience, and contributing factors that influenced the treatment.

Estimated greenhouse gas emissions associated with unnecessary intravenous antimicrobials administered in the hospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare has deleterious impacts on the environment through production of massive amounts of waste leading to generation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Single-use materials used for preparation and administration of intravenous (IV) medications are a large component of hospital waste. Transitioning medications from the IV-to-oral (PO) route, called switch therapy, may be a means of decreasing unnecessary waste and associated emissions arising from hospital care. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study involving adult patients receiving IV antimicrobials with a highly

Hypertransaminasemia in non-cirrhotic critically-ill patients.

Hypertransaminasemia - acute elevation of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase - is prevalent in non-cirrhotic adults admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and often signals extra-hepatic pathophysiology rather than intrinsic liver disease. To synthesise contemporary evidence on aetiology-driven diagnosis, management and emerging biomarkers of hypertransaminasemia in critically ill patients. We performed a structured search of PubMed, EMBASE and CENTRAL (January 2010-June 2025). The search was restricted to full-text articles that were published in English in peer-review

Action recognition in medical environments for robotic assistance.

PURPOSE: Teamwork is fundamental to medical practice and relies on seamless collaboration among professionals with different tasks. Integrating robotic systems into this environment demands smooth interactions. Human action recognition, which infers a person's state without explicit input, can support this. We focus on handovers between medical staff, using the actions as implicit cues for robotic assistance to replace the giving party in such scenarios. METHODS: Skeletal information processed with differing machine learning algorithms makes it possible to derive actions out of sequential ima

Primary urothelial carcinoma of an ileal conduit; six decades after childhood bladder exstrophy surgery: a rare and late complication.

BACKGROUND: Bladder exstrophy is a rare congenital anomaly that requires surgical reconstruction or urinary diversion early in life. While adenocarcinoma is the most commonly associated malignancy, primary urothelial carcinoma arising within an ileal conduit without any evidence of disease in the entire urinary tract is exceedingly rare and has never been reported before. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 64-year-old male with a history of bladder exstrophy managed with an ileal conduit in early childhood. He presented with intermittent bleeding from his urinary stoma, and subsequent e

Transitioning to Opioid-free Anesthesia for Pediatric Supracondylar Fracture Repairs: A Patient Safety Report.

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar fractures are among the most common injuries in the pediatric population. Recently, there has been increased interest in developing opioid-free anesthetic protocols that achieve these same goals without the risks associated with opioid use, such as postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), delayed discharges, and respiratory depression. METHODS: Seattle Children's Hospital implemented opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) for pediatric supracondylar fracture repairs in January 2021. This patient safety report compares the clinical outcomes of these patients to those who rec

Day-case alveolar bone grafting in cleft patients: a two-part retrospective and prospective feasibility study.

Alveolar bone grafting (ABG) is an essential procedure for the treatment of cleft alveolus and palate defects, promoting maxillary continuity, dental eruption, functional rehabilitation, and symmetrical facial development. Traditionally performed as an inpatient procedure due to pain management concerns, recent efforts have explored its feasibility as day-case surgery. A two-phase study was conducted. First, a retrospective analysis of 12 ABG cases (July 2023-February 2024) evaluated postoperative pain management and feasibility. This was followed by a prospective pilot study involving 17 pati
