Multi-drug resistant typhoid fever in hospitalised children. Clinical, bacteriological and epidemiological profiles.

A total of 592 children with clinical diagnosis of typhoid fever admitted to the Dr B. C. Roy Memorial Hospital for Children, Calcutta, India during the period between February 1990 and January 1992, were screened for Salmonella typhi by blood culture. S. typhi was isolated from 221 (37.3%) cases. The majority of the strains (92.3%) showed multi-drug resistant (MDR). They were resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole. However, all the strains were uniformly (100%) susceptible to gentamicin, amikacin, furazolidone, norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin.

Examination of the activities of 43 chemotherapeutic agents against Neospora caninum tachyzoites in cultured cells.

Neospora caninum causes serious disease in dogs, and it, or a similar parasite, is a major cause of abortion in cattle. Little is known about the susceptibility of this protozoan to antimicrobial agents. We studied several antimicrobial agents to determine which classes might have activity against this parasite. We also determined whether activity of such agents was coccidiocidal or coccidiostatic. A 2-day of treatment, monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassay and a 5-day of treatment, cell culture flask (CCF), lesion-based assay were developed to examine the ability of test agents to inhi

Optimum treatment of staphylococcal infections.

Serious staphylococcal infections remain a significant clinical problem despite advances in antibacterial therapy. Resistance to penicillin is common and methicillin-resistant staphylococci have become troublesome nosocomial pathogens in many institutions. Penicillinase-resistant penicillins (e.g. flucloxacillin, cloxacillin and oxacillin) are the preferred drugs for all methicillin-susceptible staphylococcal infections, although first generation cephalosporins, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations, clindamycin, and occasionally erythromycin and cotrimoxazole (trimethoprim/sulfame

Emergence of tobramycin-resistant S. epidermidis possessing aminoglycoside modifying enzymes and bacteremic superinfection during empiric therapy of febrile neutropenic episodes.

During a randomized clinical trial comparing tobramycin plus ticarcillin to netilmicin plus ticarcillin as empiric therapy of febrile neutropenic patients, Staphylococcus epidermidis emerged as the predominate superinfecting pathogen in tobramycin recipients. Overall clinical response was 68% (44/65 responding) in tobramycin/ticarcillin recipients and 73% (45/62) in netilmicin/ticarcillin recipients. However, 5/65 tobramycin/ticarcillin treated episodes were complicated by bacteremic superinfection with Staphylococcus epidermidis, as compared to 0/62 netilmicin/ticarcillin treated episodes (p

Evaluation of biofilm activity, virulence genes, and antibiotic susceptibility profiles in clinical Proteus mirabilis isolates.

INTRODUCTION: Proteus mirabilis is a common opportunistic pathogen in wound and urinary tract infections (UTIs), whose clinical significance is driven by biofilm formation. This virulence-mediated process provides a shield against antimicrobials and host immunity, promoting difficult-to-treat infections. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between biofilm-forming capacity, presence of virulence genes, and antibiotic resistance profiles in P. mirabilis isolates. METHODOLOGY: A total of 76 P. mirabilis isolates from urine and wound samples were analyzed. Isolates were identified usin

Study of the green microalga Chlorella sorokiniana for the removal of nutrients and multiple antibiotics in wastewater treatment.

Obtaining clean water is a global priority, as emphasized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Pharmaceutical pollutants are becoming more prevalent in aquatic environments, triggering public health concerns, negative environmental impacts, and the development of antibiotic resistance. Microalgae hold great potential for bioremediation of antibiotics, although most of the studies to date supporting these observations rely on conditions where artificial wastewater contained one or a fe

A Case Report of a Forehead Abscess Caused by Nocardia concava in a Patient with AIDS.

Nocardia species are obligate aerobic actinomycetes. Human nocardiosis typically occurs in immunocompromised hosts and most commonly manifests as primary suppurative pulmonary infection. Hematogenous dissemination can lead to extrapulmonary involvement, with the central nervous system being the most frequent secondary site, followed by skin and subcutaneous soft tissues; pericardium, lymph nodes, and joints are affected only rarely. A 50-year-old HIV-positive man was admitted with a 1-month history of oral blood blisters and ecchymoses of the extremities. A right forehead abscess that develope

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis in HIV/AIDS: Who Fired the First Shot, the Virus or Its Companions?

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome caused by uncontrolled activation of T-lymphocytes and macrophages. It is classified as either familial (genetic) or acquired. Among acquired forms, infections are a common trigger, with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and associated opportunistic infections frequently considered in the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 20-year-old Hispanic male who presented with nausea and vomiting and was found to have bi-cytopenia, high ferritin level, mi

Identification of a mouse-virulent recombinant type I/III Toxoplasma gondii strain in liver cytology of an immunosuppressed cat infected with FeLV-C subgroup.

Toxoplasma gondii infection is common in cats, though clinical disease is uncommon and typically occurs in immunocompromised individuals. Till now, there is no specific genotype that can be associated with a certain clinical outcome. A 5-year-old Siamese cat, diagnosed as Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)-positive and classified within the FeLV-C subgroup, presented with a two-month history of progressive lethargy, hyporexia, weight loss, and non-regenerative anemia. The cat, a rescued stray with ongoing outdoor access, had previously responded to doxycycline and prednisolone for presumed Mycoplasm

Triple-drug antibiotic therapy for disseminated nocardial abscess in the mediastinum and brain of an immunocompetent patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nocardia are widely present in nature and considered opportunistic pathogens. They can result in hematogenous spread infection through the ruptured skin or respiratory tract when the host's immune system is compromised. Currently, 119 species of Nocardia have been identified, with 54 capable of causing infections in humans. Nocardial brain abscesses are a rare intracranial lesion that accounts for only 2% of all brain abscesses, but have a mortality rate of 20-55%. This article reports a successfully cured case of mediastinal Nocardia infection with disseminated brain abscess. CAS

Ecology and epidemiology of multidrug-resistant Salmonella in synanthropic small mammals in Bangladesh.

Multidrug resistant (MDR) organisms pose a significant global concern, affecting both human and animal health. Synanthropic small mammals, such as rodents and shrews can serve as environmental reservoirs and vectors for MDR organisms, including Salmonella spp. Hence, a cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence, risk factors, and MDR patterns of Salmonella spp. in wild rodents and shrews across diverse ecological settings in Bangladesh. Throat and rectal/fecal swab samples were collected from a total of 350 mammals (203 wild rodents and 147 shrews) and tested for Salmonella

Predictive statistical models for monitoring antimicrobial resistance spread in the environment using Apis mellifera (L. 1758) colonies.

The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most relevant problems for human and animal health. According to One Health Approach, it is important to regulate the use of antimicrobials and monitor the spread of AMR in the environment as well. Apis mellifera (L. 1758) colonies were used as bioindicators thanks to their physical and behavioural characteristics. During their foraging flights, bees can intercept small particles, including atmospheric particulate matter, etc., and also microorganisms. To date, the antimicrobial surveillance network is limited to the sanitary level but l

Characteristics of Clinical Isolates of Listeria monocytogenes in Sichuan, China, in 2022 Based on Whole Genome Sequencing Analysis.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen. In 2022, we collected 15 strains of L. monocytogenes isolated from patients in some foodborne disease sentinel monitoring hospitals in Sichuan Province. Through whole genome sequencing (WGS), we obtained the virulence genes carried by the strains, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), core genome MLST (cgMLST), clonal complex (CC), and serum groups and constructed a phylogenetic tree and minimum spanning tree with nonhuman strains. An analysis shows that all 15 strains of L. monocytogenes carry virulence genes LIPI-1 and LIPI-2, whereas the carryin
