Whole blood (WB) donors are deferred for several reasons, either permanently or temporarily. In this retrospective study, we quantified the rate of and reasons for donor deferral among Turkish donors. Computer records of the last 5 years were analysed to quantify the deferral rate and reasons. Deferrals were categorized as temporary short-term (1-56 days), long-term (57-365 days) and multiple years or permanent (more than 365 days). We evaluated the results of polygonal triple (Kotz) osteotomy for the treatment of acetabular dysplasia over 10 years. This study included 31 hips of 27 patients who had the Kotz osteotomy for acetabular dysplasia. The mean age was 21.5 years. We performed the original Kotz osteotomy for the first 22 hips (group I), while the modified Kotz osteotomy through an intra-pelvic approach without damage to the abductor muscle was applied for the last 9 hips (group II). Patients were evaluated by clinically and radiologically. The average follow-up was 106 months in group I, and 18 months in group II.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of intestinal parasites among primary school children in the central region of Malatya and to educate the children about parasitic diseases. An 18-month-old boy presented with fever, hepatosplenomegaly, jaundice, pancytopenia, hyperferritinemia, hypertriglyceridemia and evidence of hemophagocytosis and trilineage myelodysplasia in the bone marrow aspiration. Appropriate treatment was begun but he died after 12 hours of hospitalization due to Gram-negative septicemia. Post-mortem examination of liver biopsy revealed diffuse hemaphagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and Leishmania-donovani bodies in macrophages.

Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis (THPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism and an uncommon form of hypokalemic periodic paralysis. Its differentiation of more common forms of periodic paralysis is important because aggressive treatment can place the patient at risk for rebound hyperkalemia. Treatment of the underlying thyroid dysfunction cures the muscle symptoms. Here we describe a 37-year-old Turkish male with THPP whose paralysis attack recurred soon after administration of radioactive iodine.

Depression is an important but inadequately diagnosed mood disorder in elderly. Depressed elderly patients often have chronic concomitant diseases. Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare disorder characterised by oculocutaneous albinism, a bleeding tendency, and lipofuscinosis.
