The assessment of the after-licensing efficacy of the Cuban vaccine VA-MENGOC-BC was performed one year after the mass immunization campaign was completed in children under 6 years of age in the Province of Holguín which had the second highest incidence rate of meningococcal disease during 1988 in Cuba. In the design of the study the following aspects were taking into account: case definition; case detection, determination of the state of vaccination, and comparability of exposure. The utilization of 2 case definitions with different sensitivity and specificity is introduced within the methodo

Cholera disease remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the third world. The parenteral cholera vaccine actually used offers only a 50% protection during 6 months. As Vibrio cholerae and its toxin don't cross the gut wall, the aim of new vaccines is to prevent the colonization and growth of the vibrio in the jejuno-ileum and to inhibit the fixation of cholera toxin (CT) on its enterocyte membrane receptor. This can be afforded by stimulation of the gut local immune system mainly represented by secretory IgA antibodies (Abs). New vaccines should comprise both bacterial and CT a

Epidemiological data on sylvatic rabies in Italy, during 10 years, from 1977 to 1986 are reported. This rabies epizootic expanded to all the alpine arch from Trieste to Aosta, can be divided in five different outbreaks. The good knowledge of the infected alpine area helped us in the identification of rabies outbreaks and in rabies struggle and prevention. Data from the literature on the relationship: landscape/fox/density/fox hunting/rabies have been confirmed and contributed to disease eradication. In a ten year epizootic, no human cases of rabies have been reported thanks to continuing healt

Mpox (monkeypox), caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), is a zoonotic disease from the Poxviridae family, closely related to smallpox. It presents with high fever, rash, and pustules, with human-to-human transmission first reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970. Historically, such transmissions were rare, but since 2022, an alarming global surge in infections began, originating in the United Kingdom. By mid-2024, 99,176 cases and 208 deaths were reported in 116 countries, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Conc

Monkeypox (MPX) has been regarded as a neglected tropic disease of Western and Central Africa since the early 70s. However, during May 2022, an unprecedent outbreak of MPX has involved most of European Countries, as well as North and South America. While the actual extent of this outbreak is being assessed by health authorities, we performed a pilot study on specific knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in a sample of Italian medical professionals (24-30 May 2022; 10,293 potential recipients), focusing on Occupational Physicians (OP), Public Health Professionals (PH), and General Practiti

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have underlying immune dysregulation. Immunosuppressive medications put them at risk of infection. This study assessed rates of recommended vaccinations and preventative screening in patients with IBD.Nationwide data on patients diagnosed with IBD in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) October 2004 to September 2014 were extracted. Variation in vaccination, screenings, and risk of death by demographic factors (age group, gender) were estimated in bivariate and multivariable analyses.During the 10-year study period, 62,002 patients were treate

Infections of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children can be prevented by vaccination; left untreated, they cause high morbidity and fatalities. This study aimed at determining the nasopharyngeal carrier rates, serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance patterns of S. pneumoniae in healthy Palestinian children under age two prior to the full introduction of the pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7), which was originally introduced into Palestine in a pilot trial in September, 2010. In a cross sectional study, nasopharyngeal specimens were collected from 397 healthy children from

BACKGROUND: Qatar residents undertake substantial outbound travel, often to destinations with risks of malaria, yellow fever, and enteric infections; however, many travelers remain unaware of preventable health risks or how to access pre-travel care. Local data show high vaccination needs and a rising incidence of imported malaria among non-immunized residents, highlighting a missed opportunity for earlier intervention at the point of booking.
METHODS: A narrative synthesis of peer-reviewed travel medicine literature and Qatar-specific epidemiological data was combined with stakeholder and se

BACKGROUND: Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare complication of the measles infection. SSPE is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that causes encephalitis, leading to the demyelination of neurons in the brain. It affects the brain in 9 months or less and hence subacute, causing encephalitis and lesions in the entire brain, so the term panencephalitis is used.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed and Google Scholar starting in April 2024, and all relevant articles were extracted for this review.
RESULTS: A rece

BACKGROUND: On 7th May 2022, human monkeypox was identified in the United Kingdom, a non-endemic zone, with subsequent multi-country outbreaks. About 6 weeks later, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported 1158 confirmed cases in non-endemic countries scattered within the European Economic Area (EEA), and a total of 1882 cases confirmed worldwide, inclusive of the EEA. These numbers are expected to increase with high alert and amplified surveillance established in non-endemic regions. In light of a looming epidemic, current understanding of the virus, and identification

Foot-and-mouth-disease (FMD), caused by the FMD virus, is a contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals. Since outbreaks often cause significant economic impact, control and prevention measures against FMDV, such as vaccines, are urgently needed especially in endemic regions. The use of inactivated whole-virus vaccines has led to the eradication of FMD in many industrialized nations. Nonetheless, recent outbreaks in Europe have highlighted the virus's potential for rapid spread and its capacity to inflict substantial economic losses. Codon pair deoptimization is a novel strategy for vir

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in the world. Current vaccination with BCG can prevent meningeal and disseminated TB in children. However, success against latent pulmonary TB infection (LTBI) or its reactivation is limited. Evidence suggests that there may be means to improve the efficacy of BCG raising the possibility of developing new vaccine candidates against LTBI.Areas covered: BCG improvements include the use of purified mycobacterial immunogenic proteins, either from an active or dormant state, as well as expressing those proteins from re

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination of healthcare professionals (HCPs) can effectively prevent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in patients. However, some HCPs remain vaccine-hesitant. This study aimed to assess beliefs towards COVID-19 vaccination and their impact on immunization practice among medical hospital staff and students. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to October 2024 in Lubuskie province, Poland, involving staff from 7 randomly selected hospitals and medical students of the University of Zielona Góra who completed a self-adminis

BACKGROUND: Influenza is a worldwide prevalent infectious disease of the respiratory tract annually causing high morbidity and mortality in Germany. Influenza is preventable by vaccination and this vaccination is so far recommended by the The German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) as a standard vaccination for people from the age of 60 onwards. Up to date a parenterally administered trivalent inactivated vaccine (TIV) has been in use almost exclusively. Since 2011 however a live-attenuated vaccine (LAIV) has been approved additionally. Consecutively, since 2013 the STIKO recommends L

UNLABELLED: The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted via mosquitoes, exhibits clinical manifestations ranging from headaches, myalgia and arthralgia to debilitating systemic malfunctions. Endemic to Africa, CHIKV has seen an increase in cases since it was first recorded in 1950. There has recently been an outbreak in numerous African nations. The authors aim to review the history and epidemiology of CHIKV in Africa, current outbreaks, strategies adopted by governments and/or international organisations to mitigate such an outbreak, and future recommendations that can be employed.

OBJECTIVE: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease caused by a group of viruses. The causative viruses have changed over time, and there is a need for a more effective protective vaccine. In this study, we investigated the profiles of human enteroviruses that caused HFMD outbreaks in Nanjing in 2015, with the goal of guiding the future prevention and treatment of HFMD.
METHODS: Specimens were collected from 1097 patients admitted to our hospital and diagnosed with HFMD. Enteroviruses in the specimens were identified by real-time polymerase chain reaction and epidem

Growing evidence supports the importance of lifestyle and environmental exposures-collectively referred to as the 'exposome'-for ensuring immune health. In this narrative review, we summarize and discuss the effects of the different exposome components (physical activity, body weight management, diet, sun exposure, stress, sleep and circadian rhythms, pollution, smoking, and gut microbiome) on immune function and inflammation, particularly in the context of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We highlight the potential role of 'exposome improvements' in the prevention-or
