Respiratory-related activity patterns in preganglionic neurones projecting into the cat cervical sympathetic trunk.

1. Activity in 233 single sympathetic preganglionic neurones that project to the superior cervical ganglion was analysed with respect to central components of respiration (phrenic nerve discharge) and to the afferent feedback generated by mechanical events occurring with ventilation in anaesthetized and artificially ventilated cats. 2. The activity in ninety-one neurones was modulated during the respiratory cycle in two ways: directly by the central inspiratory drive, and indirectly by ventilation-related blood pressure changes, acting via the systemic baroreceptors. The direct influence was p

Vagal flexibility moderates stress and burnout facets link in early childhood educators.

BACKGROUND: Teachers' well-being is crucial for effective learning environments. This study examined the relation between stress and burnout facets (emotional exhaustion (EE) and personal accomplishment (PA)) among early childhood educators, exploring the moderating role of vagal flexibility (VF; i.e., an index of change in parasympathetic nervous system functioning across time). High VF is theorized to reflect heightened sensitivity to environmental conditions, amplifying contextual effects. We hypothesized that: (1) higher psychological stress will be related to higher EE and lower PA; (2) V

Vagal blood volume receptors compensate for haemorrhage and posture change.

Cranial nerves densely innervate the heart and vasculature, with sensory neurons reporting on blood pressure, respiratory gases and tissue damage1. The roles of arterial baroreceptors in systemic physiology are well appreciated2, but the functions of vagal cardiac mechanoreceptors have been more difficult to parse, in part due to the closed-loop structure of the cardiovascular system. Here we use genetic tools in mice to identify a small group of neurons that are acutely sensitive to circulating blood volume and initiate a reflex that compensates for decreased filling of the heart in an uprigh

Cardiac vagal activity during in-vivo threat exposure is associated with within-session inhibition of fear and avoidance.

Laboratory research suggests that the attenuation of defensive responses during threat exposure relies on the inhibition of subcortical defense circuits orchestrated by the prefrontal cortex. This process may be reflected by increased vagal efferent activity on the autonomic nervous system. Here, we tested whether cardiac vagal efferent activity, indicated by vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), is associated with reduced defensive responses during in-vivo threat exposure and whether it may serve as a physiological index of multi-level exposure responding. Thirty-three women with e

Temporary Pacing for Electric Cardiac Stimulation and Neuromodulatory Cardiovascular Therapy.

The widespread prevalence and significant consequences of cardiac arrhythmias have been addressed by adopting cardiac stimulation and neuromodulation implantable devices. The oldest, most commonly employed, and most well-known technology is the permanent transvenous cardiac pacemaker. However, in select emergent clinical scenarios and transient pathologies, temporary pacing is preferred. More recently, neuromodulatory vagal nerve stimulation has emerged to address neurologic, psychiatric, and nociceptive pathologies, generating significant clinical and scientific interest in the invention of t

Remote-controlled vagal nerve stimulation attenuates ventricular arrhythmias and prevents heart failure progression in a rat model of acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) often leads to complications like ventricular arrhythmias and heart failure, driven by autonomic nervous system imbalance. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a novel remote-controlled vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) device, featuring adjustable stimulation parameters post-implantation, specifically focusing on its potential to inhibit ventricular arrhythmias and prevent the progression of heart failure in a rat model of acute MI. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized, and MI was induced by ligation of the left anterior descending artery.

Cardiac parasympathetic denervation reduces hypoxic tachycardia, baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability in humans.

The autonomic regulation of heart rate (HR) reactivity to acute hypoxia remains unclear. Parasympathetic cardioneuroablation (PCNA) may serve as a novel model for the analysis of physiological consequences of reduced vagal influence over sinus node in humans. We studied 11 adult patients scheduled for PCNA for the treatment of vasovagal syncope. HR reactivity to hypoxia was studied before and after PCNA with brief nitrogen gas administrations. Each test was followed by an atropine challenge to evaluate the contribution of parasympathetic tone to the resting HR. Additionally, we assessed change

Sex and age differences in the association between heart rate variability and cardiac chronotropy: A replication-extension study.

Using heart rate variability (vmHRV) as a proxy of cardiac vagal modulation, previous studies have hinted at sex differences in the vagal control of cardiac chronotropy in young adults, but little is known in older individuals. The current study aimed at investigating for the first time the moderating role of both sex and age in the relationship between vmHRV and cardiac chronotropy in younger (n = 106, mean age: 19.9 (3.5) years) and older (n = 109, mean age: 72.8 (2.6) years) individuals. Further, we explored the effects of hormone replacement therapy on such association in a sub-sample of p

Channel synapse mediates neurotransmission of airway protective chemoreflexes.

Neural reflexes to chemicals in the throat protect the airway from aspiration and infection. Mechanistic understanding of these reflexes remains premature, exemplified by chronic cough-a sensitized cough reflex-being a prevalent unmet clinical need. Here, in mice, a whole-body search for channel synapses-featuring CALHM1/3 channel-mediated neurotransmitter release-and single-cell transcriptomics uncovered subclasses of the Pou2f3+ chemosensory cell family in the throat communicating with vagal neurons via this synapse. They express G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) for noxious chemicals, T2R

An EEG Source Reconstruction Method Accounting for Ascending Sympathovagal Activity: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Characterizing the causal relationship between central neural activity and peripheral physiological dynamics has become a key objective in computational neuroscience research. Despite advancements in models leveraging electroencephalography (EEG) for non-invasive brain-heart interplay estimation, the specific intracortical sources underlying this interaction remain poorly understood. This study introduces a novel methodological framework for investigating how peripheral neural control of heartbeat dynamics influences brain activity at the source reconstruction level. By integrating high-densit

The association between perceived social functioning and heart rate variability is mediated by subclinical depressive symptomatology and moderated by gender.

Chronic loneliness and low perceived social support have been recognized as risk factors for both mental and cardiovascular disorders. It has been proposed that their link to psychophysiological problems may involve changes in parasympathetic activity. However, the exact underlying psychopathological mechanisms and the moderating effects of gender are still not thoroughly examined. Thus, the present study investigated associations between perceived social functioning and resting vagal tone in the context of potential cognitive and subclinical mediators and gender differences. Targeted Ganglionated Plexi Ablation With Nanoformulated Calcium Suppresses Postoperative AF Via Vagosympatholytic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that targeted chemical ganglionated plexi (GP) modulation of all major left atrial-pulmonary vein GP using novel nanoformulated calcium chloride (nCaCl2) can reverse postoperative neuroelectrical remodeling by suppressing vagosympathetic nerve activity and the localized inflammatory process, both critical substrates of POAF. METHODS: In a novel canine model of POAF with serial thoracopericardiotomies, sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), vag

Effects of aerobic, resistance and concurrent exercise on pulse wave reflection and autonomic modulation in men with elevated blood pressure.

The acute effects of exercise modes on pulse wave reflection (PWR) and their relationship with autonomic control remain undefined, particularly in individuals with elevated blood pressure (BP). We compared PWR and autonomic modulation after acute aerobic (AE), resistance (RE), and concurrent exercise (CE) in 15 men with stage-1 hypertension (mean ± SE: 34.7 ± 2.5 years, 28.4 ± 0.6 kg/m2, 133 ± 1/82 ± 2 mmHg). Participants underwent AE, RE, and CE on different days in counterbalanced order. Applanation tonometry and heart rate variability assessments were performed before and 30-min postexercis

Depressed sympathovagal modulation indicates sepsis in patients with suspected infection.

This study explored whether sympathovagal modulation assessed through frequency domains of heart rate variability (HRV) can indicate sepsis in patients with suspected infection. In total, 370 consecutive adult patients with suspected infection admitted to the emergency department were enrolled in this single-center cohort study. A continuous 10-minute electrocardiography for HRV analysis was recorded immediately for these patients after inclusion. Patients were stratified into non-sepsis and sepsis groups based on a sepsis-related organ failure assessment score of ≥2 that met the Third Internat

Processing speed and attention training modifies autonomic flexibility: A mechanistic intervention study.

Adaptation capacity is critical for maintaining cognition, yet it is understudied in groups at risk for dementia. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) is critical for neurovisceral integration and is a key contributor to adaptation capacity. To determine the central nervous system's top-down regulation of ANS, we conducted a mechanistic randomized controlled trial study, using a 6-week processing speed and attention (PS/A)-targeted intervention. Eighty-four older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) were randomized to a 6-week PS/A-targeted intervention or an active control without

The association between sympatho-vagal balance and central blood pressures.

PURPOSE: High central blood pressure is more predictive of cardiovascular disease (CVD) versus high peripheral blood pressure. Measures of central pressures (CPs) include, central systolic blood pressure (CSBP) and central diastolic blood pressure. Measures of central pressures augmentation (CPsA) include augmentation pressure (AP) and the augmentation index @ 75 beats·min-1 (AIx@75). Increased sympathetic tone (ST) is also associated with CVD. The low to high frequency ratio (LF/HF) is often used to determine sympatho-vagal balance. Given the association between ST, CPs, CPsA and CVD there is

Electrophysiological characterisation of atrial volume receptors using ex vivo models of isolated rat cardiac atria.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? What ex vivo preparation of the rat's cavoatrial junction is efficient for characterising atrial mechanoreceptors? What is the main finding and its importance? Of four different ex vivo preparations, static pressure, flow, open and euthermic, the optimal preparation was the euthermic one and involved direct recording from the right cardiac vagal branch with a Langendorff style perfusion at 37°C. Type A receptors were most common, and appeared insensitive to stretch and sensitive to atrial contraction. Type B and intermediate receptors w
