Bioinformatics analysis raises candidate genes in blood for early screening of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a typical degenerative disease, which is characterized by the most obvious symptoms of movement dysfunction, including shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty in walking and gait. This disease can not be clearly identified through laboratory tests at present, thus application of high-throughput technique in studying the expression profiles of PD helps to find the genetic markers for its early diagnosis. Studies on expression profiles of neurodegenerative diseases have revealed the novel genes and pathways involved in the progress of illness. In this s

Altered attainment of developmental milestones influences the age of diagnosis of rett syndrome.

The early developmental history prior to the manifestation of Rett syndrome features is of clinical interest. This study describes the attainment of gross developmental milestones and regression, and assesses the relationships between genotype and age at diagnosis. The Australian Rett Syndrome Database and International Rett Syndrome Phenotype Database were used to source a total of 293 confirmed female subjects. Most girls learned to sit, were able to babble or use words, and approximately half learned to walk. Altered milestone attainment was associated with earlier diagnosis. There was vari

Rehabilitation after scapulectomy.

An 84-yr-old man presented with right posterior shoulder pain and growing mass. Shoulder range of motion was limited in forward elevation and abduction; result of the neurologic testing was normal. Radiologic workup showed an irregular mass resembling Paget's disease or sarcoma. On surgical inspection, a 16-cm hemorrhagic mass, occupying the entire scapula, was identified. Patient underwent tumor resection and scapulectomy. Postoperatively, he started a rehabilitation program. With attempted ambulation, patient exhibited strong tendencies to lean rightward, walked in circles, and risking fall.

Effect of cane use on tibial strain and strain rates.

The effect of cane ambulation on hip biomechanics has been well studied, but its effect on tibial strains and strain rates is not known. To test the hypothesis that cane use may lower tibial strain and strain rates during walking, percutaneous axial extensometers were mounted on the right medial cortex of the midtibial diaphysis in seven male volunteers. In vivo peak-to-peak axial tibial strains and strain rates were measured for ipsilateral and contralateral cane usage and compared with a no cane control. Cane-assisted ambulation was not found to significantly lower strain magnitudes; however

99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT imaging in a case of repeated syncopal episodes associated with smoking.

BACKGROUND: We report here a rare case of repeated syncopal episodes associated with smoking and findings of 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) brain single-photon emission CT (SPECT) imaging. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 77-year-old man had four syncopal episodes during a half-month period. All four occurred when he stood up and walked immediately after smoking a cigarette, and syncope did not occur after cessation of smoking. Although upright testing revealed orthostatic hypotension, the patient did not complain of fainting on standing alone. Compared with brain SPECT in the supine positio

The effect of ammonium sulfate injection on peripheral nerve.

Local anesthetic drugs with prolonged nerve-block effect would have clinical application for postoperative or neuromatous pain relief. This study evaluated the possibility of peripheral nerve neurotoxicity by injection of 10 percent ammonium sulfate. Both intrafascicular and extrafascicular injection of 10 percent ammonium sulfate were tested in the rat sciatic nerve model. One percent lidocaine HCl, 5 percent phenol, and normal saline were similarly injected for comparison. Using histologic studies and motor function evaluation with walking-track analysis, 10 percent ammonium sulfate was foun

Muscle strength in postpolio patients: a prospective follow-up study.

Forty-three former polio patients now complaining of new progressive muscle weakness (symptomatic patients) plus 13 former polio patients without new neuromuscular complaints were included in the study. The symptomatic patients reported high frequencies of other neuromuscular complaints and a decline in their functional level. Most frequent complaints were general fatigue, low backache, and muscle pain (97.7%, 86%, and 79.1%, respectively) and a decline in the ability to walk (80%). In a prospective follow-up averaging 2.1 years, the muscle strength of 26 muscles in all four limbs of each pati

Restoration of gait by combined treadmill training and multichannel electrical stimulation in non-ambulatory hemiparetic patients.

Functional electrical stimulation and treadmill training with partial body weight support through suspension by a parachute harness were combined for gait restoration in 11 chronic non-ambulatory hemiparetic patients. Individually adjusted multichannel stimulation of the trunk and of upper and lower limb muscles, as well as a motor driven treadmill, induced functional gait within 3 to 6 weeks. The improvement of gait ability was assessed by the Functional Ambulation Category test. Other motor functions were rated by the Rivermead Motor Score. The leg muscle strength, stride length, cadence, ga

Locomotive syndrome: Prevalence, surgical outcomes, and physical performance of patients treated to correct adult spinal deformity.

BACKGROUND: Locomotive syndrome (LS) was proposed by the Japanese Orthopedic Association and refers to a scenario in which imminent future nursing care services will be required by elderly adults to manage the functional deterioration of their locomotive organs. It is a social imperative to clarify the risk factors and treatment strategy for LS. However, the relationship between LS and adult spinal deformity (ASD) in those who are treated with spinal corrective surgery remains largely unknown. METHODS: Forty consecutive patients who had ASD and underwent spinal surgery for their disorder were

Effects of Tai Chi combined with tDCS on cognitive function in patients with MCI: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a critical stage of dementia. Previous reviews have suggested that physical exercise combined with non-invasive brain stimulation is more beneficial for improving cognitive function. However, no targeted studies have confirmed the effect of Tai Chi combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the improvement of cognitive function in patients with MCI. Thus, this randomized trial was conducted to assess the effect of Tai Chi combined with tDCS on the cognitive performance of patients with MCI. METHODS: From April 2018 to Februar

Ankle Sprain History Does Not Significantly Alter Single- and Dual-Task Spatiotemporal Gait Mechanics.

CONTEXT: Single- and dual-task walking gait assessments have been used to identify persistent movement and cognitive dysfunction among athletes with concussions. However, it is unclear whether previous ankle sprain injuries confound these outcomes during baseline testing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of (1) ankle sprain history and (2) time since prior ankle sprain injury on single- and dual-task spatiotemporal gait outcomes and cognitive measures. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We assessed 60 college Division-I athletes (31 with ankle sprain history; 13 fe

A computational model to design neural interfaces for lower-limb sensory neuroprostheses.

BACKGROUND: Leg amputees suffer the lack of sensory feedback from a prosthesis, which is connected to their low confidence during walking, falls and low mobility. Electrical peripheral nerve stimulation (ePNS) of upper-limb amputee's residual nerves has shown the ability to restore the sensations from the missing limb via intraneural (TIME) and epineural (FINE) neural interfaces. Physiologically plausible stimulation protocols targeting lower limb sciatic nerve hold promise to induce sensory feedback restoration that should facilitate close-to-natural sensorimotor integration and therefore wal

The Associations Between Seven Different Types of Physical Activity and the Incidence of Fracture at Seven Sites in Healthy Postmenopausal UK Women.

There is a paucity of information on associations between specific types of physical activity and fracture risk at different sites in otherwise healthy postmenopausal women. Therefore, we examined risk of fracture at seven different sites associated with seven different types of physical activity in the population-based prospective UK Million Women Study. A total of 371,279 postmenopausal women (mean age 59.8 years), rating their health as good or excellent and reporting participation in walking, cycling, gardening, doing housework, yoga, dance, and sports club activities, were followed for si

Relationship of CT-quantified emphysema, small airways disease and bronchial wall dimensions with physiological, inflammatory and infective measures in COPD.

BACKGROUND: COPD is a complex, heterogeneous disease characterised by progressive development of airflow limitation. Spirometry provides little information about key aspects of pathology and is poorly related to clinical outcome, so other tools are required to investigate the disease. We sought to explore the relationships between quantitative CT analysis with functional, inflammatory and infective assessments of disease to identify the utility of imaging to stratify disease to better predict outcomes and disease response. METHODS: Patients from the AERIS study with moderate-very severe COPD
