Background: Central cord syndrome (CCS) is the most common incomplete spinal cord injury, producing more severe motor deficits in the upper than lower extremities and impairing sensory and autonomic function. Although transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has shown benefits in motor and sensory recovery after spinal cord injury, studies have not explicitly documented whether CCS subjects were included. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of tSCS over 12 weeks on motor and sensory outcomes in a subject with CCS. Methods: A 20-year-old male with a C7 injury was evaluated at b

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Little is known about how pain influences physical function in people with mild Parkinson disease (PwPD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between physical function and pain presence, location, and intensity in PwPD who were evaluated in an early physical therapy program.
METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional analysis of electronic medical records from patients with PD evaluated at a single center (2016-2023). Pain presence, location, and intensity (0-10 scale) were recorded at the initial physical therapy evaluation. Functional outcomes in

Individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation are at greater risk of falls than individuals without amputation, with slipping being a major contributing factor. The required coefficient of friction, defined as the minimum shoe-floor friction needed to prevent slipping, has been well studied in individuals without amputation but remains poorly understood in individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation. Especially, its association with gait parameters in this population is unclear. This study investigated differences in resultant required coefficient of friction and its mediolateral

Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) often experience leg muscle damage, leading to noticeable walking difficulties. Using ankle foot orthosis (AFO) may enhance gait by supporting weak muscles. This study examined whether wearing AFOs improved the spatiotemporal gait characteristics of patients with PAD to be closer to those of healthy individuals, both from its first use and after a 3-month intervention. Spatiotemporal parameters were calculated from the kinematics of 26 patients with PAD captured in a biomechanics lab. Subjects walked with and without AFOs before and following a 3-m

BACKGROUND: Supporting older adults to maintain physical activity is a key tool in combating the rising prevalence of physical frailty and its associated social, health and economic burden. Walkability of the physical environment, which in urban areas includes pedestrian infrastructure and safety, is a key facilitator of physical activity. Road crossings may be one such factor that impacts walkability for older populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine what proportion of community dwelling adults ≥65 years of age classified as frail/pre-frail in terms of their lower limb physical

Lower-limb amputees worldwide have been increasing continuously in recent years. Hydraulic knees are suitable for active transfemoral amputees in developing countries due to their adaptability to various walking speeds and greater accessibility compared to high-end prosthetics. However, most hydraulic prosthetic knees operate via ground reaction force control, which exhibits a double-peak characteristic, causing slight flexion during the early stance phase, leading to unnatural and asymmetrical gait patterns for amputees. This study proposes a novel technique that expands the concept of the tw

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is one of the most common inherited neuropathies, leading progressive muscular weakness, pes cavus, loss of deep tendon reflexes, distal sensory loss, and gait impairment. Charcot Marie Tooth Neuropathy Scale (CMTNS) represents the gold standard to assess and grade the impairment in CMT patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the correlation between CMTNS and functional status in CMT patients. We analyzed data of patients with diagnosis of CMT, collecting the following data: age; gender; BMI; CMT type (Demyelinating- Axonal- Other or mixed

BACKGROUND: Fatigability in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) arises from increased perceived and performance fatigability, contributing to functional decline.
OBJECTIVES: To explore factors influencing fatigability and the moderating role of fear of falling on balance confidence.
METHODS: In total, 66 PwMS participated in this study. Perceived fatigability was assessed after a 10-minute walk test by dividing the tiredness rating by the distance walked. Performance fatigability was calculated as the change in walking speed (at 2.5 and 10 min) divided by the distance walked. Participants

BACKGROUND: Functional decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is impacted by impaired ability to integrate and modulate complex cognitive and motor abilities, commonly known as motor-cognitive integration. Impaired motor-cognitive integration occurs in the early stages of AD, prodromal AD (pAD), and may precede other symptoms. Combined motor and cognitive training have been recommended for people with pAD and need to be better researched. Our data suggest that partnered rhythmic rehabilitation (PRR) improves motor-cognitive integration in older adults with cognitive impairment. PRR is an ideal in

Angelman Syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, intellectual disability, characteristic behavior, and movement disorders. Clinical gait analysis provides the opportunity for movement quantification to investigate an observed maladaptive change in gait pattern and offers an objective outcome of change. Pressure-sensor-based technology, inertial and activity monitoring, and instrumented gait analysis (IGA) were employed to define motor abnormalities in Angelman syndrome. Temporal-spatial gait parameters of persons with Angel

Introduction: Turning was reported as one of the activities that most frequently leads to falling among stroke patients. This study investigated whether the duration and steps of a 180° turn while walking can distinguish retrospective fallers from non-fallers and predict future falls in a 1-year period in patients with poststroke hemiplegia. Methods: Thirty stroke patients were recruited. They were instructed to get up from a chair, walk straight 3 m, turn around, and return to seated position to assess the 180° walking-turn task. Turning performance was measured by two inertial sensor units o

Despite a wide clinical spectrum, the adult form of Pompe disease is the most common one, and represents more than 90% of diagnosed patients in France. Since the marketing of enzyme replacement therapy (alglucosidase alfa, Myozyme), all reports to date in adults demonstrated an improvement of the walking distance, and a trend toward stabilization of respiratory function, but the majority of these studies were less than 5 years of duration. We report here the findings from 158 treated patients included in the French Pompe Registry, who underwent regular clinical assessments based on commonly us
