BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Numerous reports on short- and mid-term results demonstrate the value of corrective osteotomies for malunion of the distal radius. However, only long-term results can show whether a procedure has stood the test of time. Therefore the main questions to be answered in this article are: (i) are clinical and radiological improvements, recorded at short- and mid-term follow-up, long lasting? (ii) are consecutive procedures required, especially salvage procedures?; and (iii) what about the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study is based

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the progression and clinical relevance of biochemical resorption marker values during fracture healing in osteoporosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 44 patients with distal radius fractures and 29 patients without fractures, the blood and urine concentrations of pyridinoline (PYD), deoxypyridinoline (DPD), N-telopeptides (NTx), and bone sialoprotein (BSP) were recorded on the day of trauma as well as during further progression. All postmenopausal patients underwent bone density measurement. Accordingly, patients were divided into premenopausal, postmenopausal o

The age distribution of patients with distal radius fractures shows a clear predominance of patients over 60. In such patients fractures must be treated with due consideration for the general condition, accompanying illnesses, such as osteoporosis, and the often lesser ambitions concerning the function of the wrist joint. Three cases of patients over 70 years of age are presented: two of these patients were suffering from dementia and one, from multiple morbidities and poor general condition: In all three, severe osteitis of the distal radius developed after K-wire pinning to treat distal radi

The distal radius is one of the commonest sites of fracture, and this injury is sometimes associated with fracture of the distal ulna. In recent years, surgical treatment of distal radius fractures has consisted increasingly in internal fixation with locking plates followed by early functional postoperative treatment. The associated injury to the distal ulna has so far not received much attention in the literature. Various techniques have veen described for its treatment: Kirscher wire fixation, tension band wiring, and internal fixation with screws and plates. Following positive results with

Patients with scaphoid nonunion with humpback deformity and collapse of the wrist were treated with palmar wedge bone grafting combined with reduction of the lunate to correct the dorsal intercalated segment instability deformity. Union was obtained at an average of 3 months, and patient satisfaction with functional outcome and pain relief was high. Palmar wedge bone grafting combined with correction of lunate malalignment successfully achieved scaphoid union, restored scaphoid length, and avoided the potential complication of scaphoid malunion. This report revisits a technique that facilitate

Hip fractures are common and devastating events. The apolipoprotein E*4 (APOE) allele, associated with Alzheimer's disease, has also been associated with osteoporosis in hemodialysis patients. We prospectively studied 1750 women, age >/=65 years, who underwent measurements of hip and calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD), were typed for APOE and followed for approximately 7.0 years for the occurrence of fractures and falls. Women with at least one APOE*4 allele had an increased risk of hip fracture, relative hazard (RH) (95% confidence interval) = 1.90 (1.05-3.41) and wrist fracture, RH = 1.67

Computed tomography scans have supplanted conventional tomography for many applications and often are considered the imaging study of choice for assessing intraarticular distal radial fractures. Concern about cost containment in healthcare delivery prompts the question of whether the two studies provide comparable information and at what cost. Common intraarticular distal radial fractures were created in 12 lightly embalmed cadaveric specimens. The fractures were fixed with radiolucent Kirschner wires. Articular step off was measured with a caliper. Plain radiographs, computed tomography scans

Thirteen cases with radiographic evidence of injury to the ulnar side of the hand are reviewed. These injuries included intraarticular fractures and/or dislocations of the fourth and fifth carpometacarpal joints and associated bones collectively discussed here as the ulnar carpometacarpal region. In nine the extent of the injury was not appreciated on first presentation. Injuries to this region are often difficult to assess clinically and radiographically even in experienced hands. In our experience computerized tomography (CT) scans in the longitudinal and longitudinal oblique axis best displ

BACKGROUND: Despite the relative prevalence of intra-articular calcaneal fractures, definitive treatment is controversial. Historically the closed treatment of these injuries had been unsatisfactory. Avoid the soft tissue complications, several minimally-invasive approaches have been proposed throughout the history of calcaneal fracture treatment and recently gained popularity.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to verify the effectiveness of minimally invasive osteosynthesis for the treatment of intra articular calcaneal fractures in 20 cases.

Elbow joint rehabilitation presents a formidable challenge, underscored by the joint's complex biomechanics and high vulnerability to injuries and degenerative conditions. Despite the advancements in rehabilitative technology, current solutions such as rigid exoskeletons often fall short in providing the precision, flexibility, and customization needed for effective treatment. Although traditional robotic aids, such as rigid exoskeletons, help recover, they lack in providing sufficient flexibility, comfort, and easy customization with no need for complicated calculation and complex design cons

Acute pain after surgery can cause harmful effects. There are many ways to treat pain after surgery. Bier block technique is also a type of intravenous regional anesthesia that is suitable for short and minor surgeries of the arm, wrist, and fingers, so this study aims to compare the analgesic effect of Ketorolac in intravenous injection and when the lidocaine is added to Bier block. In surgery, traumatic injuries to the upper limbs. This study was a clinical trial, randomized and double-blind. The target population was candidates for upper limb orthopedic surgery. The patients selected based

PURPOSE: Radiation dose is a general concern in diagnostic imaging and a special concern for children who are at greater risk from radiation effects. This study evaluates effective doses (E) produced during 2D and volume imaging with a novel cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) based extremity imaging device. The device's compact size and protocol options offer image choices that enhance the potential for reduced dose and improved diagnostics when evaluating sports injuries.
METHODS: Hand-wrist, foot-ankle, and knee phantoms were developed for use with optically stimulated luminescent dosimet

PURPOSE: The recommended technique for the fixation of a scaphoid waist fracture involves a headless compression screw placed in the proximal fragment center. This is usually accomplished by placing a longitudinal axis screw as visualized by fluoroscopy. The screw length has been shown to have a biomechanical advantage. An alternative to these options, which has been debated in the literature, is a screw placed perpendicular to the fracture plane and in its center. The perpendicular screw may have a biomechanical advantage despite the fact that it may be shorter. This study examined the differ

PURPOSE: To assess the results of a hybrid Russe procedure using a corticocancellous strut, cancellous autologous nonvascularized bone graft, and cannulated headless compression screw to reduce the deformity reliably from a collapsed scaphoid nonunion, provide osteoinductive stimulus, and stabilize the fracture for predictable union.
METHODS: A hybrid Russe procedure was performed for scaphoid waist fracture nonunions with humpback deformity and no evidence of avascular necrosis. A volar distal radius autologous bone graft was harvested and a strut of cortical bone was fashioned and placed in

Although ulnar neuropathy can occur at the wrist in association with distal radius fractures, few late-onset cases have been reported. The authors describe 2 cases of delayed-onset ulnar neuropathy at the wrist, which developed 12 and 30 years after sustaining a conservatively treated distal radius fracture. During late neurolysis, both patients were found to have a perforation in the volar wrist capsule and synovitis and arthritis in the distal radioulnar joint.

There is not enough evidence in the literature to support the use of any treatment in distal radius fractures, mainly because of the heterogeneous aspects of most series. There is a need for more standardized analyses of distal radius fractures that should allow the identification of more homogeneous groups of patients. The authors propose a novel synthetic method to analyse acute distal radius fractures in adults. A one-page chart includes criteria related to the patient (P), the energy of the accident (A), and the characteristics of the fracture (F) along with associated ulnar and carpal les

This article reports on 45 cases in which extra-articular ossifications were removed following cranial-cerebral traumata. Radiologically detectable relapses occurred in 6% of the patients only; however, in none of these cases did the relapses lead to reankylosis of the joint. In the sagittal plane, the average gain in mobility was an increase of 84 degrees in the hip joint and of 100 degrees in the elbow joint. Considerable complications were caused by four fractures in extremely osteoporotic bones. To reduce the fracture rate, surgery should be performed as soon as possible after bone maturat
